Apocalypse: the Most Ruthless Person
Chapter 656 - 543: Reunion with Old Friends
"Alright, doing what you’re confident in is great; we’re all playing to our strengths."
Zhang Su agreed with Yuwen’s statement. Looking at the few remaining vehicles behind them, he raised his hand and said, "Let’s go, let’s get in the car and head home!"
The car with the Fire-breathing Zombie was driven by Zheng Xinyu, leading the convoy from the front, with a light tank bringing up the rear.
Over a hundred vehicles in total, some as long as seven or eight meters, with the shortest being four or five meters; at most three vehicles wide, some cars were relatively broad or driven by less skilled drivers, resulting in only two vehicles. The gap between vehicles was at least three or four meters; the entire convoy stretched five to six hundred meters from start to finish, making it quite a spectacle when viewed from above.
The most striking was a little sidecar that sometimes led and sometimes trailed the convoy. Even Zhao Dezhu couldn’t stand the cold and had to sit in the car, leaving Lu Yubo cheerfully riding the sidecar, fulfilling a small motorcycle dream of sorts.
Due to the varied skills of the drivers and the heavy load of the vehicles, the convoy’s overall speed was not fast, roughly maintaining at 30 kilometers per hour, swaying forward leisurely.
Zhang Su, sitting in the tank, couldn’t say he was completely at ease, but there was no pressure driving normally. It was said to be providing rear cover for the convoy, but he really just wanted to slack off a bit—whatever little visibility the tank offered, he could only see the few vehicles ahead and nothing else...
Whistling, smoking, feeling great, taking a rare moment to relax.
The tank was almost completely enclosed, so he didn’t worry about his mood affecting others; he could think about whatever he wanted, in total freedom.
Reflecting on the events of the past day, life on Celestial Horse Island passed quickly without much sensation, but in just over a day in the city, he encountered more incidents than a month on Celestial Horse Island!
The resolutions might not have been perfect, but they were satisfactory, and many new friends were made. It was a help for future developments, prompting a sense of emotion as he thought of the thriving camp.
Taking out a thermos from his bag, he sipped some hot tea brewed at the barracks, feeling entirely comfortable.
Just as he was enjoying himself, Zhang Su suddenly saw the sunroof of the vehicle ahead slowly open. Before he could ponder why anyone would use a sunroof in such cold weather, Pang Dakun stuck his head out to look back, then waved at the tank’s observation port and picked up the intercom.
"Uncle, behind you, there’s a car catching up!"
"Huh?"
Zhang Su was startled. The tank was so noisy that his Super Hearing was basically ineffective. He pressed the brake, and the treads emitted a sound of metal pressing against metal.
The light tank was equipped with a commander’s periscope, but since he was seated at the controls, he didn’t have the leisure to observe his surroundings. Since Pang Dakun confirmed the situation, there was no need for doubts, and he immediately issued an order.
"Xinyu, stop!"
Instructions were given before departure that the main force’s speed should match the battered trucks, and once those trucks stopped, the convoy had to follow.
The convoy was stretched long, and Zheng Xinyu, at the front, couldn’t see what was happening behind. However, she could hear Pang Dakun’s conversation with Zhang Su and was prepared to stop as soon as she heard a car was approaching.
At speeds of 20-30 km/hr, as long as she wasn’t distracted, pressing the brake would bring the vehicle to a halt. Over a hundred vehicles stopped neatly along the road, with many noticing the car approaching from behind—unfazed by the cold, people stuck their heads out to watch the scene.
A sedan, and two vans—one large, one small—all in poor condition, the worst being a seven-seater van with a missing door, letting the cold wind blow inside. The people inside must have felt quite invigorated...
The three vehicles didn’t speed up to catch the convoy; instead, seeing the convoy stop, they halted 40-50 meters away, seemingly cautious.
Clang!
"Old Yang, take the brothers and keep watch around us. Xinyu, you and Zhang Ya take people to scout ahead!"
While issuing instructions, Zhang Su pushed open the hatch and climbed halfway out. Members of the Yama Corps gathered around the tank, all armed, and many other combat personnel also moved toward the convoy’s tail, eager not to miss this chance to shine!
"What the heck, are they planning to rob us?"
Zhao Dezhu, with a peculiar expression, pointed at the three cars stopped in the distance.
"Haha..."
"I guess they wouldn’t dare, haha."
"Unless they’re out of their minds."
Some people around him laughed at Zhao Dezhu’s cold joke, not everyone thought it was dull, especially those with vivid imaginations who found the idea of three cars full of people trying to rob a convoy of over five hundred people rather amusing.
Zhang Su furrowed his brows. His Energy Value wasn’t sufficient to hear conversations inside the cars 40-50 meters away, and he didn’t intend to use his Backup Energy Slot. But he could clearly see the first row inside the cars.
Judging by appearances, the group looked quite ragged, similar to the defeated look of Mountain Camp, clad in tattered clothes and messy hair, their faces showing signs of frostbite due to the cold and dry weather.
Three cars’ front rows cramped eight people, indicating even more crowding in the back. Among the eight, there were two women, the rest being adult men, none of whom were conversing; all stared directly in their direction...
"Damn, what’s going on here?"
Zhang Su was baffled by the group’s somewhat dazed state.
With zombies having greatly evolved, even the North City Four Tigers had to strategically relocate, meaning many survival camps could face catastrophe. While mentally prepared for survivors to chase them, their silent, dumbfounded demeanor was puzzling.
