Chapter 15 Kai Blackwood
Chapter 15: Chapter 15 Kai Blackwood
The man was startled for a moment, staring at Luna as though he had just seen an alien.
Luna herself was already getting pissed off by his constant staring. She honestly felt like marching over there and beating some sense into his thick skull.
"Maybe helping him was a terrible decision?" she wondered.
But at the same time, doing everything by herself when this was only Phase One of the apocalypse was simply stupid.
"Who are you!?" the man shouted.
Luna gaped at him in disbelief.
Did he seriously just ask her that?
She was trying to save his pathetic life, yet here he was questioning her like she was some kidnapper.
"Okay, let’s do it this way. If you don’t come out soon, that roof is going to collapse on you. Either it falls and crushes you to death, or the acid rain melts your flesh until nothing but your skeleton is left."
She hated talking too much.
Luna preferred watching things happen instead of wasting words, but this guy was testing every ounce of patience she had left.
"I don’t know you," the man replied stubbornly. "I can’t go out with a stranger."
Luna let out a long gasp.
Was he trying to act cute right now?
On top of the danger they were already in?
[Host, threat spotted. Approaching at extremely high speed.]
Okay...
That was bad.
Luna immediately accelerated the amphibious vehicle.
Unfortunately, she couldn’t activate the camouflage system until the idiot actually jumped inside. If she activated it now, the vehicle would disappear from his sight completely.
"Kai, I swear to God, if I get to you right now, you won’t like what happens."
The young man blinked.
He slowly looked up at the pouring acid rain before glancing at the flooded streets beneath him.
"How do you know my name? You’re not my mother!"
He practically screamed the words.
By then, the giant mutated whale had already reached Luna’s position.
She began driving in circles while several other creatures remained strangely still beneath the dark water.
It was almost as if they were waiting.
Patiently.
Waiting for the real chase to begin.
That thought alone sent chills crawling down Luna’s spine.
Honestly...
Only a fool wouldn’t be terrified after seeing such horrifying abominations.
"Okay... I know you’re scared."
The words almost made her cringe.
Comforting people wasn’t exactly her specialty.
Still, if it got him off that rooftop, she’d say whatever she had to.
Kai hesitated.
"I don’t have much time," Luna continued. "But I promise you this. If you come with me, you’ll live. Why do you think I risked driving all the way through these dangerous waters? To kill you? Please use your goddamn brain."
That last part was unnecessarily harsh.
But she was honestly reaching her limit.
Kai slowly nodded.
"Are... are you sure we can get out of here? There are sharks everywhere... and isn’t that a giant whale?"
Luna nodded impatiently.
Of course she saw them.
That was exactly why she was trying to hurry him up.
"I know, dude. Can you just jump already and let me do my job? You’ll be safe... at least you’ll be alive."
Kai frowned.
"’At least?’ You’re not even sure!"
He immediately shook his head.
"No! I’m not getting butchered by those things!"
Luna closed her eyes for a second while clutching the steering wheel so tightly her knuckles almost turned white.
Okay, Luna... breathe.
Something suddenly felt wrong.
Her system had stopped warning her about the incoming creature.
Earlier, it had been screaming warnings nonstop because something dangerous was approaching at an insane speed.
So...
Why had it suddenly gone silent?
"You’re safe."
Luna forced a smile.
"I promise."
Apparently Kai was either incredibly naive or simply too trusting because the fake smile somehow worked.
As Kai finally prepared to jump, he stood at the edge of the rooftop.
Luna adjusted her position, preparing to catch him the moment he leaped.
That was when she noticed something.
It wasn’t only her waiting for Kai.
The creatures had noticed too.
She didn’t know whether they had figured out her plan, but one after another, they surfaced from the black water.
The ocean that had once surrounded the city had become a living nightmare.
Dark waves shifted violently as monstrous creatures lined themselves beneath Kai’s position.
Massive jaws.
Rows of razor-sharp teeth.
Tentacles thicker than tree trunks.
Kai, completely oblivious, bent his knees.
"Are you certain I’ll be safe?" he asked one last time.
"I’m only doing this because I know if I stay on this roof... I’m going to die."
Luna almost smirked.
At least the idiot understood that much.
But the smile disappeared the instant he jumped.
"Fuck!"
"Dude! I didn’t tell you to jump yet!"
Kai’s body dropped through the air.
Just as he was about to reach Luna...
Something burst from beneath the water.
It wasn’t the whale.
It wasn’t one of the sharks either.
It looked like a gigantic octopus with the face of a snake and the burning eyes of a hawk.
The horrifying creature shot toward Kai at frightening speed.
Luna saw everything through the holographic display projected by her system.
Without hesitation, she slammed the camouflage button.
The vehicle instantly disappeared.
At the same time, she stepped on the brakes, launched herself upward, and leaped toward Kai just as the monster reached him.
Kai’s eyes widened.
"The... the vehicle..."
"It disappeared!"
"What is happening?!"
"Hey! Lady! Where are you?!"
Before he could panic any further, he finally noticed the enormous monster inches away from swallowing him whole.
His terrified scream echoed through the flooded city.
"Arrrrghhhhh!!"
Just before those horrifying jaws could snap shut...
Another force grabbed him.
Kai screamed even louder.
A hand immediately covered his mouth.
"Shit."
"You whine way too much."
"Aren’t you supposed to be a man?"
"What are you... ten years old?"
Kai instantly shut up.
Only then did he realize every single monster floating nearby had turned toward them.
Luna wasted no time.
She dragged him inside the invisible amphibious vehicle before sealing the reinforced door shut.
The moment she confirmed the windows were completely secured, she slammed her foot on the accelerator.
A gigantic shark suddenly launched itself upward.
CRACK!!
Its massive jaws clamped onto the bottom of the vehicle, causing the entire machine to shake violently.
"The engine."
"I want it activated and enhanced!"
Luna shouted.
Kai looked around in complete confusion.
"What does that even mean?"
"Who are you talking to?"
"Me?"
His eyes nearly popped out of their sockets when a cold mechanical voice echoed inside the vehicle.
[Thirty Infinity Coins deducted.]
Luna cursed under her breath.
Thirty coins...
That was practically daylight robbery.
Still...
It was either spend the coins...
Or die.
[Engine successfully activated.]
[Vehicle reinforcement complete.]
Luna nodded.
Without hesitation, she slammed her foot onto the accelerator.
The enhanced engine roared.
The shark’s enormous jaws failed to withstand the force.
CRACK!!
Its mouth split apart.
Kai gasped loudly.
"Holy shit..."
"That was insane!"
Luna rolled her eyes.
This wasn’t some action movie.
This was reality.
Unfortunately...
The nightmare wasn’t over.
More creatures continued chasing after them.
Several monsters with enormous tentacles wrapped themselves around the vehicle, trying to drag it beneath the water.
Luna calmly scanned the control panel before spotting another unfamiliar button.
Without thinking twice...
She pressed it.
Immediately, hidden compartments along both sides of the amphibious vehicle opened.
Rows of automatic launchers emerged.
BOOM!
BOOM!
BOOM!
Explosive shells rained in every direction.
Every monster struck by the barrage exploded into countless bloody pieces before sinking beneath the dark water.
The bombardment continued relentlessly.
One creature after another disappeared beneath the waves until the remaining monsters finally stopped chasing them.
Only then did Luna allow herself to breathe.
The ruined city slowly disappeared behind them.
"Fucking hell..."
Kai looked out through the reinforced window.
"What even happened to the world?"
"When are all these waters ever going to dry up?"
Luna ignored him completely.
She simply kept driving.
Kai turned toward her again, his eyes practically sparkling.
"You’re so cool."
"You look just like those heroes on television."
"Are you one of them?"
Luna stared at him in stunned silence.
Wait...
Are you sure this wasn’t the wrong guy?
She had specifically risked her life to recruit someone with ice powers.
Not an idiot.
"Tell me..."
"You have ice powers... right?"
Because if he didn’t...
She might seriously throw him back into the water herself.
Kai shrugged casually.
"I got them about two weeks ago."
"What does that even mean?"
"And how do you know so much about me?"
"Tell me!"
Luna had officially reached her limit.
She activated the vehicle’s autopilot before reaching into one of the storage compartments.
Taking out a roll of tape, she leaned over and firmly sealed Kai’s mouth shut.
"There..."
She smiled in satisfaction.
"Much better."
"You actually look more handsome when you’re quiet."
Kai could only glare at her while muffled sounds escaped beneath the tape.
Ignoring him completely, Luna turned her attention back to the endless flooded road ahead.
She remained silent for a long moment.
Then she sighed softly.
"I really hope..."
"I know what I’m doing."
