Chapter 476 - 232: Optimization, Entering the Capital City, Seeing an Old Friend Again
Chapter 476: Chapter 232: Optimization, Entering the Capital City, Seeing an Old Friend Again
In the densest areas, the bodies were piled several meters high. Baking under the scorching summer sun, they emitted a monstrous, putrid stench.
On the ground between them, there were also several giant craters, hundreds of meters wide, where traces of Black Spine Zergs’ activity could now be seen.
Presumably, these were tunnels dug by the Zerg Race to breach the first line of defense, but they had been caught in a pincer attack and paid a heavy price.
Seeing this, Lin Feng was beginning to understand why the Federation’s high command had insisted on the defense of the Capital.
Because as long as the logistics could be maintained, the millions of survivors and the army of several hundred thousand Awakeners here...
’They might actually be able to hold out!’
Unfortunately, the problem lay with logistics.
The high command had overestimated their control over the regional factions after the apocalypse broke out.
Especially with communications having been cut off everywhere and the emergence of Awakeners, the gap in Combat Power between the two sides had shrunk once more.
Some ambitious individuals would inevitably develop their own agendas.
Furthermore, the resources and manpower the Federation high command poured into the defense of the Capital kept growing, creating a bottomless Abyss. It reached the point where it severely impacted the basic survival of the regional territories.
This ultimately created the current predicament where the entire rear safe zone would obey mobilization orders but ignore central decrees.
If this breakout plan for the Capital failed to rescue the survivors inside, especially the crucial hundreds of thousands of Awakeners...
...then the Federation would truly exist in name only!
For Lin Feng, however, this was not a good thing.
Because if the North lost its powerful force resisting the Zerg Race invasion, the Mother Empress Alliance would disband. As a result, the pressure on the various regions in the South would skyrocket.
The very reason they had been drawn to besiege the Capital was the hundreds of thousands of Awakeners gathered here. This resource could allow more than one Mid-stage Mother Empress to advance directly to the Tier Three Late Stage!
They would become one of the final candidates for the title of Tier Four Zerg King!
But once these people were scattered across the vast Northern Wilderness, the resource-rich South would become the next target for numerous Mother Empresses.
Lin Feng’s plan to defend Jiangnan and cultivate the Salvation Army to establish a permanent base would also be utterly ruined under the fierce onslaught of a second Mother Empress Alliance.
This was one of the reasons he had chosen to travel north and provide reinforcements.
As for other, more personal reasons, he also wanted to see an old acquaintance.
For instance, Qin Hu, who was currently defending the Federal Capital.
To avoid dirtying his Battle Armor and clothes, Lin Feng forcefully leaped from the top of the defensive wall, using the wings of his Golden Warship to dive toward the fifth defense line.
He reached his destination in a mere six or seven seconds.
He crash-landed at high speed behind the tightly guarded fifth defense line, the impact shattering the concrete ground and creating a ten-meter-wide crater.
The tremendous noise quickly attracted a large group of soldiers armed with live ammunition, who all raised their guns and surrounded the area.
When the cloud of dust settled, the extremely tense soldiers saw a mysterious, unknown humanoid figure clad in Golden Armor.
One of the Awakener soldiers, his nerves stretched taut, accidentally pulled the trigger, firing a 20mm large-caliber round.
But the figure in the Golden Armor caught it with its bare hand and crushed it to dust in its palm.
"Don’t shoot! Everyone, stand down!"
At that moment, a powerful and resonant command rang out, and the soldiers present quickly parted to form a path.
A general in battered, orange Battle Armor walked to within a few dozen meters of the unknown being.
"It’s been a long time, Commander Lin."
"Though I suppose I should call you City Lord Lin now."
Lin Feng slowly retracted his Face Armor and looked at the approaching man.
It was Chen Shu, one of the members of the genetic modification team that had followed Qin Hu Underground back at Wu City’s first defense line.
He was a top student with considerable knowledge of biology.
Now, after being baptized by more than half a month of war, he had become much more mature and world-weary. Several new scars adorned his face, and his strength had even entered the Tier Two Late Stage.
Lin Feng nodded in acknowledgment, then asked with a grave expression:
"The Federation’s high command should have already issued the breakout order. Where is Qin Hu now?"
"Why are you all still defending..."
A flash of surprise crossed Chen Shu’s eyes, and the nearby soldiers also revealed looks of utter disbelief.
Seeing this, Lin Feng realized something was amiss and quickly added:
"I was specifically invited by the higher-ups to lead you all in the breakout!"
"Take me to Qin Hu at once!"
Chen Shu quickly snapped out of it and hastily replied:
"Thank you, City Lord Lin! Please, follow me!"
"General Qin is currently at the fourth defense line, formulating the breakout plan!"
"With the help of a Tier Three Awakener like you, someone who can slay a Zerg Race Mother Empress, I’m sure we can all break through the siege successfully!"
