The wind cut through the narrow granite pass like a jagged razor, whipping thick flurries of melting slush across the icy cliffs. High above the valley floor, hidden beneath a canopy of pine branches and heavy camouflaged netting, Su Yun lay prone against the cold stone outcrop.

Her cheek was pressed firmly against the cheek-rest of her sniper rifle, her eyes staring through the crosshairs of her thermal optic scope. 𝚏𝗋ℯⅇ

Beside her, kneeling in the damp gravel, was Old Wang. He adjusted his high-powered optical rangefinder, his face set in a hard, focused grimace as he monitored the winding road below.

"Wind is gusting west-northwest at twelve knots," Old Wang reported softly, his breath misting in the frigid air. "Distance to the primary choke point is four hundred and twenty meters. How’s your head holding up, Su Yun?"

Su Yun didn’t break her lock through the scope. The throbbing ache at the base of her skull had settled into a dull, manageable hum, masked by the cold rush of pure adrenaline surging through her veins. "My sight is clear, Old Wang. Range and wind locked. Focus on the target line."

Old Wang gave her a brief, lingering glance, keeping his secondary rifle ready. He knew how critical her suppressing fire would be once the shooting started. He had first thought of being the primary sniper himself and having Su Yun as his assist but when he heard about her abnormal condition from Lin Qing, he decided to be a spotter instead. He still had his own rifle on the side ready just in case.

Back in Research Center, final defensive preparations were being locked into place. In the command hub and lower staging area, Lu Feng stood near the primary blast doors, his rifle held across his chest as he organized the base’s interior guard rotation. Beside him stood Song Yan, his face pale but composed as he focused his energy inward.

"Song Yan," Lu Feng called out, his voice echoing in the staging bay. "Sun Hao says that solitary bomber overhead is less than seven minutes out from its drop window. If those high-yield munitions hit the mountain peak, the shockwave could rattle the structural pillars of this bunker."

Song Yan nodded grimly, spreading his hands outward. A faint, shimmering distortive haze ripple began to radiate from his palms, wrapping around the central concrete support columns of the lower staging floor. "I’ll anchor the structural gravity fields around the main blast vault. Even if the outer ridge collapses under an air strike, the inner residential suites won’t cave in. Just make sure Han Zheng and Lin Qing get everyone back inside before the sky falls."

Down on the thawing valley floor, four hundred meters past the primary entrance tunnel, Han Zheng, Lin Qing, and Ah Hua crouched behind a jagged outcrop of granite. The air here smelled heavily of wet clay, diesel exhaust, and raw ozone.

Ah Hua was kneeling beside a detonation console, his right hand holding the wiring harness while his left hand rested directly over the primary hydraulic firing switch. Micro-servos inside his metallic wrist whined softly with a precise, satisfying clank-whir as he tested his grip against the iron lever.

"Look at them coming up the bend," Ah Hua whispered, a fierce, eager grin spreading across his face as he looked down the narrow canyon trail. "They really brought the whole parade."

Sprinting through the slush and mud below, the lead elements of the Apex’s Third Mechanized Vanguard rolled into view. Two light reconnaissance hover-bikes led the way, their high-frequency engine hum echoing off the cliff walls, followed closely by a towering, six-wheeled heavy armored personnel carrier.

The massive vehicle’s sloped steel plating was coated in mud, its heavy kinetic turret slowly rotating left and right as it probed the silent tree line. Behind it, two secondary troop transports crept single-file along the narrow, thawing ledge, completely unaware of the multi-layered kill-zone waiting right above their heads.

"Hold your position," Han Zheng commanded in a low, resonant growl, his hand resting on the grip of his rifle. "Wait for the lead APC to hit the center mark between the two granite fissures."

Lin Qing leaned around the edge of the stone outcrop, her eyes tracking the lead hover-bikes as they glided over the mud. "They’re entering the bottleneck. Ah Hua, get ready."

"Born ready, Vice-Commander," Ah Hua chuckled softly. He tightened his steel fingers around the iron lever. The custom prosthetic easily crushed the safety latch on the console with forty pounds of raw mechanical torque. "Let’s give these Apex bastards a proper mountain welcome."

The lead armored personnel carrier drove straight onto the seismic pressure zone. The heavy front tires sank into the soft slush, aligning the vehicle perfectly with the base of the sheer rock face.

"Now!" Han Zheng roared.

Ah Hua slammed the iron lever down with a sharp, heavy CLANK of his mechanical hand.

An instantaneous, deafening roar tore through the canyon as industrial welding charges and kinetic explosive blocks detonated simultaneously along the cliff wall. A blinding flash of orange fire ripped through the gray mist, followed by a shockwave that rattled the teeth in Ah Hua’s jaw.

The entire sheer granite wall cracked violently along its natural fault line. Fifty tons of jagged, razor-sharp granite, boulders, and frozen mud sheared off the mountain face, crashing down directly onto the convoy in a massive, terrifying rockslide.

The lead heavy APC was instantly buried beneath a mountain of falling stone. The force of the impact crumpled its roof like an aluminum can, blowing out its massive tires and pinning the vehicle completely into the mud. The two escort hover-bikes were swiped clean off the trail by the cascading debris, thrown headlong into the deep, rocky gorge below.

"Rockslide confirmed!" Old Wang shouted from the high ridge, looking through his rangefinder. "Lead vehicle disabled! The trail is completely blocked!"

Before the dust and grey powder could settle over the canyon, the rear doors of the secondary troop transports burst open. Dozens of heavily armored infantrymen spilled out into the mud, coughing through the smoke and frantically raising their automatic rifles toward the upper tree line.

"Open fire!" Han Zheng bellowed, leaping over the granite outcrop with his rifle raised.

Han Zheng and Lin Qing unleashed a devastating hail of armor-piercing gunfire down into the disoriented Apex troopers below. Lin Qing moved with lethal, graceful speed, her bursts catching three Apex guards before they could deploy their portable energy shields.

High on the ridge, Su Yun took a deep, steady breath, her world narrowing down to the crosshairs in her scope.

"Secondary transport, rear tread driver!" Old Wang called out, adjusting his lens. "Target locked!"

Su Yun pulled the trigger.

THUM-CLACK!

The heavy anti-materiel sniper rifle kicked hard against her shoulder. Four hundred meters below, the high-density tungsten round punched straight through the side armor plate of the second Apex transport, shattering the primary drive sprocket in a spray of sparks and flying shrapnel. The vehicle lurched violently to the left, its treads snapping off completely as it skidded sideways into the mud, blocking the entire rear retreat path for the infantry. 𝙛𝓇ⅇ

"Hit!" Old Wang yelled. "Rear transport crippled! They’re trapped in the gorge!"

Down in the mud, Ah Hua drew his sidearm with his left hand while using his prosthetic arm to sweep aside a fallen tree trunk blocking their field of fire. An Apex trooper scrambled up the muddy embankment, raising his weapon toward Ah Hua.

Ah Hua didn’t hesitate. He lunged forward, his mechanical hand reaching out with blinding speed and grabbing the barrel of the trooper’s rifle. With a single, crushing surge of hydraulic power, Ah Hua twisted his wrist, snapping the steel barrel of the rifle in half before driving a heavy, metallic left-hook punch straight into the trooper’s helmet, sending the guard flying backward into the slush.

"Man, I love this new arm!" Ah Hua laughed, wiping a streak of dark mud from his face as he reloaded his sidearm.

The remaining Apex soldiers, realizing they were caught in a lethal bottleneck with no forward escape and no rear exit, attempted to dig in behind the wreckage of the secondary transport, returning heavy, erratic suppressive fire up toward the cliffs.

High-caliber rounds chewed into the mud and shattered pine branches around Han Zheng and Lin Qing, but the squad maintained absolute control of the high ground.

Su Yun worked her bolt action with practiced, rhythmic perfection.

CLICK-CLACK... THUM-CLACK!

Each round she fired from her perch claimed an enemy heavy gunner, dismantling Apex’s attempt to mount a mounted turret defense before it could even begin.

Suddenly, a deep, terrifying vibration began to echo through the mountain pass—not from the ground below, but from the cloud layer high above.

The sound was a low, unnatural hollow roar, a heavy atmospheric tear that made the cold air inside the canyon tremble.

Up on the high ridge, Old Wang’s face went dead pale. He looked up at the thick, gray cloud deck overhead, where a vast, dark silhouette was beginning to cut through the misty cloud layer.

"Han Zheng! Lin Qing!" Old Wang roared into his tactical comms unit, his voice filled with urgent thunder. "The bomber! It’s clearing the upper cloud deck directly above the peak! Drop window in thirty seconds!"
