"She can block bullets... She’s a defensive type! Haha, capture her and the boss will give us a huge reward!"

Boss Li knew what his gunman was capable of. When he saw that all three shots had only managed to graze her, he instantly understood what was happening. With a shout, he began using a row of cars for cover as he charged toward Ye Qingniao!

BANG, BANG, BANG!

But the moment they moved, several more shots rang out from the firing ports of the armored vehicle. Due to the limited firing arc, however, the bullets all slammed into the metal bodies of the roadside cars, showering sparks but hurting no one.

"There’s only one person left inside! Stay clear of those firing ports! He won’t dare stick his head out, so he’s basically shooting blind!"

Boss Li peeked out from behind his cover and glanced at the armored vehicle. He raised his pistol, fired two shots toward Ye Qingniao, and yelled his orders. Crouching low, he resumed his charge in her direction at a speed far beyond that of a normal person. He spotted three of his men trembling behind a car ahead and cursed,

"Get the fuck up, all of you! Surround her! She only has a pistol! That little girl has to be over there too!"

Seeing the three of them still hesitating, a vicious glint flashed in Boss Li’s eyes.

BANG!

Without hesitation, he raised his gun and fired a shot that slammed into the concrete right in front of one of the men!

Flying shards of concrete instantly lacerated the man’s face, making him let out a bloodcurdling scream like a pig being slaughtered.

"Get a move on if you don’t want to die!"

Boss Li’s voice sounded more terrifying than a demon’s.

"Otherwise, I’ll break his legs right now and drag him back to feed to the zombies!"

The gunshot had terrified the three underlings who were still cowering on the ground. One look at their boss charging forward like a rabid dog, at the dark muzzle of his gun, and the thought of what "feeding to the zombies" truly meant... Fear instantly conquered all.

They scrambled to their feet with bizarre shouts, brandishing their hooked spears and fanning out as they charged toward the woman!

"Yiyi! Come on!"

But Ye Qingniao was a step ahead of them. She had already lunged toward the black sedan like a swift cheetah. Without even looking, she smashed the rear window with the butt of her gun and reached inside, planning to pull the girl out and make a run for it...

But her hand grasped at nothing.

"What?!"

Ye Qingniao’s heart seized in terror. She whipped her head around to look.

The car was completely empty. The leather back seat was damp, and on it lay only a few empty snack bags and that grimy stuffed toy, looking forlorn. It was as if the little girl had never existed, as if it had all been a hallucination.

"Yiyi, it’s dangerous! Come out!"

Ye Qingniao yelled frantically, swinging the butt of her gun again and again, shattering the front windshield. Still nothing. The driver’s seat, the passenger’s seat, even under the seats... not a soul.

’Where is she?’

Her eyes flew wide, her mind going blank for an instant.

’Even though I wasn’t staring right at it, the car was right under my nose the whole time. If someone had opened the door to get out, there’s no way I would have missed the movement. Could she have just... vanished into thin air?’

BANG!

The instant she hesitated, another shot rang out! A bullet tore through the car’s shattered front windshield and whizzed past Ye Qingniao’s ear, its searing passage severing a few strands of her hair.

CRASH—WHOOSH!

Immediately after, the window on the other side of the car was violently smashed. A hooked spear, reeking of rust and blood, shot through the cabin like a striking viper, aiming straight for her neck!

Ye Qingniao instinctively threw herself backward, the cold tip of the hook scraping past her nose. Her eyes flashed with killing intent. Without a second thought, she twisted her wrist and fired.

BANG!

The bullet tore through the car door, striking the man on the other side in the thigh.

"AHHH—!"

With a scream of agony, the man’s hand went slack. The hooked spear, now uncontrolled, became wedged in the car’s seats.

However, the crisis was far from over.

BANG! BANG!

Two more shots rang out from her side. At the same time, the other two thugs seized the opportunity to close the distance. Their long spears whistled through the air, one high and one low, sealing off all her escape routes!

"Shit!"

With no time to look for the mysteriously vanished little girl, Ye Qingniao unleashed her power again, throwing up her invisible barrier!

Luckily, pistol rounds didn’t carry much kinetic energy. The barrier deflected both bullets just enough. One struck the car door in front of her, sending up a shower of sparks, while the other grazed the side of her tactical vest, searing a black line across the nylon fabric.

"You’re really pushing it, aren’t you?!"

That finally pushed Ye Qingniao over the edge.

’Since the little girl is an Awakened One, and since she could vanish into thin air, she must have some way to protect herself. Or maybe she’s just a part of this bizarre environment. Whether it’s teleportation or invisibility, now isn’t the time to worry about it!’

SHING!

Her right hand shot behind her, and in a single motion, she drew the leather-wrapped longsword slung across her back. The blade crackled with electricity as she swung it in a reverse grip.

The blade sliced through the incoming spear as if it were tofu. With the sharp crack of snapping metal, the fine steel tip of the spear was sheared clean off!

BZZZT! A violent electric current shot down the metal shaft. Even though the man was wearing gloves, his rain-soaked clothes acted as a perfect conductor.

After a few more crackles of electricity, a puff of black smoke rose from the man. Arcs of electricity even leaped from his body, jolting the spearman next to him so hard he shuddered and dropped his own weapon. That saved Ye Qingniao the trouble of having to block it.
