Apocalypse Escape: Day One of Survival

Chapter 339: Moment of Extreme Cold

  • Next Chapter

The temperature was frigid. Xie Ning was wearing two layers of thermal underwear and a heavy down jacket on top, but even with her abilities as a Fourth-rank Gold Ability User, she could still feel the bone-chilling cold from outside, to say nothing of everyone else.

’This is going to be a rough time.’

But the terrifying drop in temperature wasn’t the worst part. Xie Ning was more worried that the extreme cold would cause viruses to multiply or mutate on a massive scale.

The situation would become uncontrollable.

Gu Chen returned to the courtyard house with Xie Ning. He jumped down into the cellar and lowered the partition, and immediately felt much warmer.

A short while later, Lu Wei arrived, leading a group of young men in military uniforms who were carrying seven or eight large crates.

When seven or eight crates full of dazzling Crystal Cores were placed in front of Xie Ning, even the worldly Xie Ning couldn’t help but stare with wide-eyed astonishment.

"All of these were collected from the ruins of the old street and Canghua Home."

"They’re actually all Crystal Cores from the monsters you and your team took down. You just didn’t have time to pick them all up."

’I did pick some up,’ Xie Ning thought. ’I just didn’t get to all of them.’

Especially that night at the bathhouse when swarms of mutated cockroaches and rats poured in. Everyone was running for their lives, and she hadn’t had time to collect the Crystal Cores.

"These..."

"No need to be polite with your boyfriend." Gu Chen reached out and patted her head.

Lu Wei and his men came and went quickly, leaving the members of the Song Family to circle the crates, touching them here and there, clicking their tongues in amazement.

Xie Ning waved her hand and stored everything away.

After a moment of thought, she decided to speak up. "I ran into some trouble at Canghua Home this time. During the incident, I accidentally absorbed the Energy Crystal of a Space Ability User."

Xie Ning looked at Gu Chen. "I don’t know if you’ve heard of him, but he’s the Superpower User with the ’Pocket Farm’ Space."

"I have," Gu Chen nodded. "I heard he has something like a personal farm that he carries with him, where he can even grow vegetables. I never knew if it was true or not."

"Huh? Sis, what do you mean? You met that ’Pocket Farm’ guy?"

"Mhm. He attacked me first. He must have discovered my Space Ability and wanted to get his hands on the things in my Space. But I ended up killing him instead. That’s what happened."

Everyone could tell from her casual tone that the situation must have been extremely dangerous.

"What happened then?"

"This is what I need to confess to you all." Xie Ning looked at the pairs of curious eyes staring at her from around the room and, with a deadpan expression, dropped a bombshell.

"After I accidentally absorbed his Energy Crystal, I... gained his ’Pocket Farm’ Space."

"What?" Song Shijun’s eyes widened in utter surprise. "You mean that guy I heard about before, from the Superpower Special Team? What was his name? Zhu Zihao?"

"Yes, that’s him."

"Sis, you have a Space?" Song Kexin blurted out.

"I’ve always had a Space." Xie Ning wasn’t as excited as they were; her expression was perfectly normal.

"No, I mean you have a Space for growing vegetables now?"

"Mhm." ’It’s better to just say it all at once,’ Xie Ning thought. It would save her a headache from her family getting over-excited and shouting at every little bit of news she revealed.

"It’s a pretty big farming Space, almost like one of those farm-to-table resorts!"

"I love farm-to-table resorts!" her family members said in unison, then all started talking at once. "What’s it look like?"

"Ningning, describe it for us."

"How about I just take you inside to see it?"

Everyone stared at her blankly. "What?"

Xie Ning’s spiritual power stirred slightly, and with a WHOOSH, she and her grandfather, who was closest to her, vanished from before their eyes.

Everyone, including Gu Chen, stared in stunned silence at the empty spot where the two had been, unable to process what had just happened.

Xie Ning quickly reappeared before them and continued to gaze at them impassively. "There must be a spatial limit or an energy restriction. I can’t take all of you in at once."

After explaining, she tried again, this time taking her grandmother inside as well.

Then she reappeared again, looked at the eager crowd gathered around her, and tried yet again.

"It’s no use. Right now, I can probably only take two people in at most."

Song Youzhi paced around Xie Ning excitedly. "Ningning, can we go in and see too?"

"Of course. I’ll go discuss it with Grandpa and Grandma." Xie Ning went in again and came back out less than a minute later.

When they saw her dark eyes sweeping over them, they all shot up as if they were on steroids, bouncing on their feet and thrusting their right hands in the air. "Me, me, me! I’ll go! Let me go in first!"

"Grandpa and Grandma said to wait. They’ll come out after they’ve had a meal."

What?

Everyone’s faces fell in unison.

Song You’ai burst out laughing. "Mom and Dad must be overjoyed, right? Look how happy they are, they don’t even want to come out."

The younger ones, itching with curiosity, crowded around Xie Ning, bombarding her with questions. "What’s it like inside?" "How big is the land?" "How many vegetables are there?"

The chaotic barrage of questions left Xie Ning a bit overwhelmed.

So, she simply popped back inside and took a few pictures with her phone to show them.

Everyone immediately lunged for the phone to get a look.

After seeing the pictures, they grew even more impatient, desperate to go in and look around.

"Oh my god, it’s a miniature paradise."

"It’s not small at all! This half-acre plot is full of lush green vegetables. They look like they’re growing so well."

"And that huge warehouse next to it must be able to store a lot of things."

Xie Ning explained the photos to them one by one—this warehouse was for this, that one for that—and pointing to a five-story metal silo, she said it was a zoo, housing such-and-such animals.

Her explanation did nothing to dampen their enthusiasm. On the contrary, everyone grew even more excited, wanting only to see this farm-to-table resort Space with their own eyes.

Unfortunately, the two elders were wandering through the fields endlessly.

After that, they even had lunch inside before finally emerging at a leisurely pace.

Everyone swarmed them in a rush, bombarding them with questions.

Song Yaoguo grinned and said a single word, "Amazing!"

His wife nodded vigorously. "It’s so magical, so incredible. Oh, just go see for yourselves. It’s as warm as spring inside, you can take off your down jackets once you’re in."

"Me, me, me! Sis, let me go in first!"

The younger ones scrambled over each other, all trying to push their way closer to Xie Ning.

So Xie Ning took them in for a tour, but she soon realized that if everyone stayed inside for too long, they wouldn’t all get a turn in one day.

So she set a thirty-minute time limit for each person’s visit.

By the time everyone had taken their turn, it was already dinnertime.

Every single person who came out was beside themselves with excitement.

As the extreme cold descended upon the outside world, Xie Ning and her group were having the time of their lives, popping in and out of the farm-to-table resort Space to play.

"About the Space being able to hold people... currently, only Beichen knows."

"Oh, you mean that young man with the Healing System superpower, right? He’s incredible. After he gave me a quick treatment, these old bones of mine feel so much better all over."

Xie Ning sighed helplessly.
