Apocalypse Escape: Day One of Survival
Chapter 307: Frozen World
The fourth and fifth floors were converted into pigsties, the third floor was for free-roaming cattle and sheep, and the second floor was overrun with the usual chickens, ducks, and geese.
Someone with no animal husbandry skills whatsoever just threw them in without a second thought, even moving the rabbit hutches to the second floor to let them all live happily together...
She also used her superpower to fill in all the annoying rabbit holes in the lawn outside so she wouldn’t have to deal with the trouble of stepping into one with every other step.
After all that, the sixty-to-seventy-square-meter space on the first floor was left vacant, available for future needs.
The great thing about this Farmhouse Space was its self-cleaning air, so even though a certain someone had irresponsibly penned all the poultry and livestock in a single building, the smell wasn’t too strong.
With that, the entire Space became much tidier and cleaner.
After Xie Ning finished using her Gold Ability to construct a five-story weapon arsenal, a five-story fruit and vegetable storehouse, and a five-story storage warehouse, her Gold Ability superpower energy was completely depleted, leaving her so exhausted she started to question her life choices.
The initial joy of obtaining this Farmhouse Space had been completely worn away by the better part of a day’s worth of grueling labor!
’This is exhausting!’
Although she could feel her emptied Gold Ability superpower energy rapidly and crazily regenerating, it did little to alleviate the young woman’s mental and physical exhaustion.
She checked her phone. It was already 5:30 in the afternoon.
She had actually been toiling away in the Farmhouse Space for over four hours!
"Is this place bigger than five hundred square meters?" Xie Ning asked, slumped in front of the warehouse she’d built, a rare look of confusion on her face.
"Who told you it was five hundred square meters?" Beichen asked, his expression impassive.
"It was the basic information my superpower fed me when I first entered this Space."
"Then I think that basic information probably didn’t include the half-acre of land," Beichen said lightly. "The five hundred square meters most likely refers to the net area of the Space, excluding the half-acre plot."
Xie Ning: ??
She felt the kid probably had a point.
Besides the supermarket area of over 120 square meters and the sixty-square-meter zoo, she had also built three identical metal warehouses, each a little over one hundred square meters.
In front of the supermarket area, there was still an open patch for miscellaneous items, piled with messy boxes and cabinets—likely things Zhu Zihao had secretly scavenged during his missions after the apocalypse began.
Xie Ning took a few sips of Energy Water to replenish her strength, then gritted her teeth and stood up. She continued to activate her Space Ability, moving all the locked iron cabinets to the fifth floor of the arsenal, which filled up that level almost perfectly.
Next, she moved the fresh vegetables piled by the fields to the first floor of the fruit and vegetable storehouse.
Looking at the empty storehouse, she fashioned a six-tiered metal shelf on the spot and piled the produce onto it, only then nodding in satisfaction.
The batch of newly harvested vegetables nearly filled the six-tiered shelf. Xie Ning looked up at it and silently praised herself.
’What a master of organization!’
After all her arranging and moving, she felt the now properly organized Farmhouse Space was clean and flawless.
The only issue was the open area in front of the door, which was still piled high with various supplies Zhu Zihao had collected after the apocalypse. Xie Ning felt she should know when to stop; she couldn’t keep working today. ’I’m so tired...’
So, she moved all of it into the first floor of the storage warehouse for the time being, piling it up haphazardly. She’d sort through it slowly later when she had free time.
In the process of moving everything, however, Xie Ning’s gaze swept past four large, red leather suitcases bearing Huang Shi Yao’s name, and she left them out.
’Huang Shi Yao’s things?’
Xie Ning casually opened one of the suitcases and found many couture evening gowns, dresses, high heels...
Beichen noticed the contents of the suitcase and couldn’t help but let out a derisive snort.
"Idiot."
Xie Ning glanced silently at the boy. She felt his words... were crude, but he wasn’t wrong. She quite agreed.
"It looks like Huang Shi Yao was planning a long trip, packing up all her worldly possessions." It was just a mission, but anyone who didn’t know better would think she was going on a world tour.
Xie Ning opened another suitcase, and the brilliant sparkle nearly blinded her. It was filled with everything from rings, bracelets, and necklaces to earrings and studs—all of them complete jewelry sets. There were at least fifty or sixty sets in total.
Besides that, there were also countless cosmetics, sorted by category and stuffed into the suitcase. There were even dozens of sets of face masks alone.
"Disgusting." Beichen rolled his eyes. "She’s so ugly, even if she wore a mountain of gold and silver, it wouldn’t change the fact that she’s an ugly bitch."
Xie Ning opened the other two suitcases. Thankfully, these two were normal. One was completely filled with high-calorie snacks and drinks—stuff that could save your life in a pinch.
The other suitcase contained nothing but vacuum-sealed cooked food, the kind you can eat right out of the bag.
Xie Ning tossed the boy a vacuum-sealed pressed duck and grinned. "A little something extra for dinner tonight."
...
After finishing dinner at 6:30, when Xie Ning pulled Beichen out of the Farmhouse Space, both of them were left gaping in astonishment.
"Ha-ACHOO!"
The cold air made the boy shudder violently. He stared with wide, dazed eyes, unable to believe it.
Xie Ning grabbed two brand-new down jackets from the villa’s living room, tossed one to the boy, and quickly bundled herself up in the other.
The moment she put on the long, men’s style down jacket, her whole world felt much warmer!
Xie Ning narrowed her eyes and looked ahead, seeing only a vast expanse of pure white under the dark sky.
The spot where they now stood had become a field of ruins; the tall buildings that once stood there had long since collapsed.
The two of them were now standing on top of the collapsed rubble, staring dumbfounded at the snow-covered scenery all around them.
What’s it like for the temperature to plummet sixty degrees in a single day?
After the apocalypse, all of humanity got to experience it firsthand—a temperature drop so sharp it felt like falling off a cliff.
Beichen breathed out, and a small puff of white mist instantly formed in front of him.
"What’s the temperature now?"
"Zero degrees, probably."
"This is insane." Beichen stared ahead, his face a mask of disbelief.
As far as the eye could see, there was nothing but ruins, ruins, and more ruins. It would probably take some time to get out of this rubble field.
"What do we do?"
Xie Ning rubbed her cold hands together. "First, let’s go back, put on warmer clothes and snow boots, and then try to make our way out?"
Since they didn’t know if the temperature would continue to fall if they delayed, their only option was to try moving at night.
Judging by global temperature trends after the apocalypse, this kind of drastic drop was likely to continue.
If they didn’t leave tonight, tomorrow morning would likely be even colder than it was now!
Beichen took a deep breath and nodded.
The next moment, he was pulled back into the temperate Farmhouse Space by Xie Ning.
They looked at each other, and Beichen said in a low voice, "There’s a hot water dispenser under the food cabinet. Let’s fill some flasks before we go out again."
It could be said that the preparations Zhu Zihao made before the apocalypse were even more thorough than Xie Ning had imagined.
He had considered almost everything, except for one thing... courting death will get you killed.
Xie Ning dug out two pairs of snow boots, padded pants, and also took out thick scarves, fleece gloves, and other such items.
The two of them geared up, bundling themselves from head to toe until only their dark eyes were visible, staring at each other.
Five minutes later, they reappeared in the outside world, each carrying a backpack. Just as they’d expected, the temperature felt like it had dropped even further.
