Perry Yates soon put the matter out of her mind, as she had something more important to deal with.

She took out the Flame Barrier Card she had just retrieved.

After being recalled, the Flame Barrier hadn’t returned directly to her body like her previous cards.

She took a look at the card.

The card, which should have been glittering gold, was now faintly ringed with a soft red glow, and its temperature was much higher than a normal card’s.

Perry Yates silently switched the card to her other hand.

‘Looks like I’ll have to let the flames inside burn out completely.’

Perry Yates wasn’t in a hurry. The card was back in her hands, after all; it was just a matter of time before she could merge with it.

Just as she put the card away and was about to head to the next location, her expression suddenly froze. This state lasted for about three seconds.

Once she returned to normal, Perry Yates immediately looked toward a patch of grass below.

That patch of grass rustled slightly.

Before, Perry Yates might have thought it was just the wind causing it to rustle, but now…

She pulled out her Spiritual Ability Gun and fired at the patch of grass without hesitation.

The next second, the wretched screech of an insect echoed out, followed by a splatter of its fragmented body parts and fluids all over the ground.

After dealing with the insect hidden in the grass, Perry Yates didn’t let her guard down. Instead, she left the area as quickly as possible.

Her foreknowledge Talent had just activated.

In the vision she foresaw, countless insects were heading her way, and the one she had just killed in the grass was one of them.

In the vision, the insect would have successfully passed through the grass, then stealthily climbed up the thick tree trunk behind her. Just as it opened its guillotine-like mouth, she would have shot it in the head.

However, Perry Yates had no desire for such a thrilling experience, so she dealt with the insect ahead of time.

As she retreated, Perry Yates recalled the images from her foreknowledge.

The image of a person had flashed by in her vision.

Foreknowledge presented her with important fragments of future events in advance, like pieces of a memory—for example, the insect that was supposed to appear behind her.

‘In other words, the visions couldn’t be useless. Since a person appeared in them, could it be… that the insects heading this way are being controlled by someone?’

Given the sheer variety of Card Abilities, that possibility really couldn’t be ruled out.

After all, while these insects were large, they weren’t very smart. Controlling them would be quite easy.

It might not even require direct control, just a little bit of guidance, or simply making the insects go berserk.

After an unknown amount of time, the screeching of insects and the sound of countless flapping wings filled the air, enough to make one’s skin crawl.

Fortunately, by rushing, Perry Yates had managed to get out of the insects’ path.

However, probably because she wasn’t too far away, she still encountered quite a few insects along the way.

Seeing this, Perry Yates decided it was better to avoid trouble, so she activated her Silver Cross, hoping to leave unnoticed.

However, for some reason, the insects were able to pinpoint her location as if they had tracking radar and began to attack her.

When she saw a huge centipede rear up and spit a mouthful of venom at her—which missed and hit the ground with a SIZZLING, corrosive sound—Perry Yates knew this was going to be trouble.

This trouble wasn’t just for her, but for every player who had entered the game.

After taking care of all the insects, Perry Yates found a hidden spot to catch her breath.

She had been misled by the name “Carboniferous Period” all along. She’d thought it would be just like the explanatory videos she used to watch—at most, the oxygen content would be a bit higher, the humidity a bit higher, the plants more abundant, and the insects a bit larger. That’s it.

Even though her Card Skills were disabled, she still had items. So, from the very beginning, Perry Yates hadn’t really taken the dangers here seriously.

Compared to the insects here, she was more worried about the threat from other players.

When she saw the dragonfly that could use Wind Blade earlier, Perry Yates had assumed it was because of a card. But of the insects she had just encountered, if not all, then at least eight out of ten possessed special abilities.

Some could spit venom from their mouths, some had armor that could become incredibly hard, and one centipede had even grown wings and could breathe fire.

‘Could it be that all these insects were transformed from cards?’

‘It’s possible, but not very likely.’

Perry Yates possessed a large number of cards. Taking insect-type cards as an example, their Skills were mainly focused on two aspects: venom and Body Enhancement. They weren’t a very popular card type.

So, those insects from earlier had most likely evolved these special abilities on their own.

To test her theory, Perry Yates decided to find a few more insects to experiment on.

Plants were everywhere, so finding an insect was quite simple.

Soon, she found a target: a giant spider. Its body and abdomen were covered in a pattern of blue and red, all but screaming the words “I’m poisonous.”

Perry Yates decided to use it as a test subject. ‘But how should I test it?’

After a moment of thought, she decided to take the most direct and brutal approach: she would just attack and tie up the giant spider.

Faced with such a life-or-death threat, it would surely use every trick it had.

Five minutes later, the spider that had been waiting in its web for prey to walk right into its trap was now trussed up and lying on the ground.

Faced with this sudden, life-threatening situation, the giant spider did indeed use its special tricks.

Normal spiders produce silk from their rears, but this giant spider could not only spray Spider Silk from behind, but could even Spit Silk from its mouth.

Judging from the luster of the Spider Silk, the strands from its mouth were clearly much tougher than the ones from its rear.

‘But…’

‘This doesn’t seem to prove anything.’

Perry Yates stroked her chin, seriously pondering whether this ability to Spit Silk counted as a special ability. ‘What if spiders in the Carboniferous Period were just like this?’

‘Speaking of which, were there even spiders during the Carboniferous Period?’

‘There should have been, right?’

With this in mind, Perry Yates decided to find a few more test subjects.

As for this spider, Perry Yates then discovered that it didn’t even have Poisonous Fangs. In other words, it was a non-venomous spider.

Perry Yates: “…”
