Chapter 182: Chapter 119: Destroying with Ease
However, a more pressing crisis quickly pulled Xu Mo’s attention back to reality. He frowned, his gaze fixed on the distance. A dense black mass of common zombies, drawn by the continuous gunfire and the scent of the living, was roaring as it surged toward them like a tide, getting closer and closer.
Fortunately, Lu Chuan and his team, being an experienced Superpower User squad, were extremely fast at treating wounds. They completed their emergency first aid in the span of just a few breaths.
Seeing that they had their injuries temporarily under control, Xu Mo asked directly, "What’s the plan?" His voice sounded somewhat muffled through his face wrap.
Lu Chuan answered immediately. "We want to go to a nearby fortress to rest and resupply, then return to Jiang City to report the situation as soon as possible. The closest one... should be Fortress D-10." His gaze was questioning as he looked at Xu Mo, having subconsciously started treating this mysterious and powerful masked man as their temporary leader.
Xu Mo nodded; he had anticipated this choice. But then he glanced at the six Level-1 mutated zombie corpses on the ground and the Level-2 venom zombie corpse in the distance, his brow furrowing slightly. The zombie horde was closing in. If they didn’t dispose of these bodies, new zombies could spawn from them once the tide of undead washed over this area, leading to endless future trouble.
Lu Chuan noticed Xu Mo’s glance and immediately understood his concern. He turned to the stern-faced young woman and said, "Wu, take care of it."
"Yes," the woman called Wu replied. She quickly took out a palm-sized, can-like metal container from inside her combat suit. Finding the pull-ring on top, she gave it a hard yank and then precisely tossed the container into the pile of mutated zombie corpses.
POP!
With a soft pop, the container ruptured, splattering a large amount of thick, pale-yellow liquid over the corpses’ surfaces. A moment later, WHOOSH! Pale-blue flames erupted, burning fiercely. The air immediately filled with the acrid smell of burnt protein, mixed with a strange chemical odor. The flames were clearly burning at an extremely high temperature, as the mutated zombie corpses rapidly carbonized and shriveled within them.
"Go!" Xu Mo wasted no more time. Uttering the single, terse word, his figure blurred into motion as he took the lead, rushing toward Fortress D-10.
Lu Chuan and the other four exchanged a look, steeled themselves, and followed closely behind Xu Mo.
Gripping his Triangular Spike, Xu Mo abandoned any thought of a roundabout route, instead setting a direct path to Fortress D-10. This meant they would have to break through more groups of scattered zombies head-on.
Along the way, Xu Mo was like an efficient reaper, his figure flashing rapidly ahead. Against the zombies that continuously lunged at them, the Triangular Spike in his hand became a streak of deadly black lightning. Every stab and slash precisely pierced a zombie’s skull, his movements concise, efficient, and without a single wasted motion.
A zombie would barely have time to roar and lunge before a cold light flashed, and it would collapse to the ground.
To Lu Chuan and the four others watching from behind, this fluid and effortless slaughter seemed to possess a bizarre sense of coordination. It felt less like the zombies were being attacked and more like they were actively offering their heads to that strange Triangular Spike, completing a precise "docking."
Xu Mo’s advance met with almost no resistance. The rhythm of his steps was not even noticeably disrupted by the slaughter. It was as if this wasn’t a life-or-death struggle, but rather a cleanup conducted with the ease of a leisurely stroll.
Xu Mo knew full well this wasn’t some profound technique, but simply the result of overwhelming power. By fully channeling his Thirteen Grand Protectors’ Cross Training, his dynamic vision, neural reaction speed, and bodily control had all ascended to a new level. To his senses, the movements of these common zombies were riddled with openings, as slow as a film in slow motion. He only needed to follow the trajectory of a lunging zombie and make the slightest movement with his arm to send the Triangular Spike into its vital point in the most direct and effortless way possible.
However, this scene of slaughter—so effortless it was almost artistic—sent shockwaves through the minds of Lu Chuan and the others behind him. They exchanged frequent glances, each seeing the same unconcealable shock and terror in the others’ eyes.
This was something that could not be achieved with mere strength and speed. It required a terrifying, almost instinctual mastery of timing, distance, and angles. ’Just who is this masked man? His power... it probably far exceeds anything we could have imagined.’
"We’re almost there," Xu Mo said as they ran, his voice calm and his head not turning back. "Aren’t you going to contact the D-10 personnel?"
"Oh? Oh! Right, right!" Lu Chuan slapped his forehead, finally snapping out of his awe at Xu Mo’s skill. ’How could I be so dense?’ he cursed himself internally. He hastily grabbed his walkie-talkie, his tone urgent yet clear as he reported, "A-02, D-10, this is Lu Chuan of the Sharp Sword squad! We are out of danger and, with the assistance of a... a friendly, are en route to Fortress D-10 for temporary R&R. ETA three minutes. Requesting support from D-10! I repeat, requesting support!
The moment he finished speaking, a reply crackled through the walkie-talkie, a mixture of surprise and relief.
First came the excited voice of Wang Meng, the Observer at D-10: "’Sharp Sword’ squad, D-10 copies! We have eyes on you!"
Immediately after, the steady voice from A-02 came through again, tinged with an almost imperceptible hint of relief. "’Sharp Sword’ squad, A-02 copies. Your safety is confirmed. You are cleared to enter D-10 to recuperate. Tend to your wounds and restore your stamina as soon as possible. Await further instructions."
The other Observers who had been listening intently to the channel also chimed in with brief congratulations and exclamations of relief.
Listening to the voices on the channel, the taut nerves of Lu Chuan and his four teammates finally relaxed a little. The relief of surviving their ordeal washed over them. In unison, their gazes fell once more upon the silent, powerful, black-clad back running ahead of them, their hearts filled with an inexpressible mix of gratitude and curiosity.
And Xu Mo continued to run in silence. The Triangular Spike in his hand occasionally flashed with a cold light as he precisely cleared the last few scattered obstacles from their path. The familiar steel silhouette of Fortress D-10 was now clearly visible.
