Chapter 132: Chapter 101: Superpower User Squad

All firepower from the line immediately concentrated on that direction, but hitting fast-moving targets at night with standard rifle rounds was difficult. Two agile zombies, like slippery loaches, weaved through the hail of bullets and rapidly closed the distance.

Xu Mo’s breathing was steady. His eyes, looking through the iron sights, locked firmly onto one of the agile zombies as it leaped from behind a low wall. He didn’t fire on full-auto, but instead calmly squeezed the trigger.

"BANG! BANG!"

Just like before, a precise two-round burst. The first bullet struck the zombie’s chest, making it falter, and the second followed an instant later, drilling right into its eye socket.

With one down, Xu Mo shifted his aim, searching for the second target. The other agile zombie seemed to sense the danger. It let out a piercing shriek, picked up speed, and began running in an erratic, zigzagging pattern.

Xu Mo’s expression remained unchanged. His finger took up the slack on the trigger as he mentally calculated its trajectory and speed. The instant it changed direction again, its body freezing for a fraction of a second—

"BANG!"

Another sharp crack from his rifle, and the bullet whizzed out, striking the agile zombie squarely in its more vulnerable knee joint!

"CRACK!" The sickening sound of splintering bone was faintly audible. The zombie shrieked as its forward momentum died. It tumbled to the ground, its mobility gone. The heavy machine gunner on the line immediately seized the opportunity, and a dense stream of bullets instantly overwhelmed it.

"Nice shooting, Xu Mo," Captain Wang praised from the side. Xu Mo’s marksmanship was calm and efficient. His ability to eliminate single targets was on par with a top-tier Precision Shooter.

The second wave hit around two in the morning. This time, a new type of mutated zombie appeared in the horde. An exceptionally burly Strength Zombie, standing over two and a half meters tall with arms that had mutated into two massive bone hammers, charged toward the line like a heavy tank. Standard rounds hitting its thick muscles and bone armor only left shallow white marks, failing to do any real damage.

’Seeing this, Xu Mo’s eyes narrowed. ’Even a full-power strike from me might not break through that defense.’

"Heavy machine gun, load Armor-Piercing Bullets! Target that big one!" Captain Wang ordered, remaining calm in the face of danger.

The heavy machine gun in the center of the line immediately swiveled, its deep roar erupting once more. This time, it spat out a stream of Armor-Piercing Bullets, the kind designed to take on light-armored targets and fortified structures.

"THUD-THUD-THUD-THUD—"

The blazing chain of Armor-Piercing Bullets lashed into the Strength Zombie’s chest and head. Despite its astonishing defense, it was easily torn to shreds under such concentrated, heavy firepower.

For the rest of the fight, though sporadic zombie attacks continued, no other difficult mutated types appeared. They were all neutralized, one by one, by the tight web of fire from the defense line and Xu Mo’s precision kills.

As dawn broke, the relief shift arrived. Xu Mo and Feng Dayong fell back from the firing line with Captain Wang’s squad.

On the way back to the rest area, Captain Wang made a point of walking over to Xu Mo to commend his performance.

After Captain Wang left, Feng Dayong sidled up with a grin. "Xu, looks like that ’Sharpshooter’ title of yours is here to stay. Even a new captain is impressed by you. Sticking with you makes me, Old Feng, feel a whole lot safer."

Xu Mo just gave a helpless shake of his head.

The two grabbed a quick bite to eat and returned to the rest area, making the most of their time to recover. Two consecutive nights of fighting, while not at maximum intensity, had given Xu Mo a much clearer understanding of how strange and dangerous this battlefield was. The Superpower User squad returning with heavy injuries, the increasing frequency of mutated zombies—it all felt like dark clouds gathering over the Red Star Industrial Zone.

As Xu Mo lay on his bunk, the need to increase his strength as quickly as possible became more urgent than ever.

’That mutated zombie from last night’s second wave had made him acutely aware of his own weakness. While he wouldn’t need to just stand there and trade blows with that kind of zombie, the power gap couldn’t be this huge, could it? He even suspected that the Superpower User squad that retreated yesterday had met a similar fate because they ran into one of those things.’
