Apocalypse Arrives: I Become a Powerhouse by Scavenging
Chapter 631 - 621: Zombie 16
Bathing with bottled mineral water... nowadays, Kai York was probably the only one extravagant enough to do such a thing.
But then again, there were no water sources nearby, and the ice Moira Lynch had created would take time to melt.
After washing up and changing into a fresh set of clothes, Kai York was once again his usual handsome self (or so he thought).
"All right, now that you’re here, come and help us out," Shane Rhodes said. "You still have plenty of room in your Space Button, right?"
Kai York answered honestly, "The rules of this game seem completely different from last time. It didn’t give us any choices at all. Luckily, I had my items on me. As for the Space Button, besides some wild fruits and Crystal Cores, it’s basically empty."
After all, he had been teleported directly into a forest surrounded by plants he didn’t recognize, which made gathering supplies extremely difficult.
Even the wild fruits currently in his Space Button were only there because he’d used several rabbits as test subjects to check if they were poisonous.
Hearing this, Shane Rhodes nodded. "That’s perfect. Come with us."
Kai York obediently followed behind Shane Rhodes. After walking for a while, he suddenly asked, "Boss, aren’t we going to look for Hugh Finch?"
It was Moira Lynch who answered this time.
"Hugh Finch just contacted me. He said he’s waiting for us at the food processing plant, our destination."
Kai York nodded, a look of understanding on his face.
Long before Moira Lynch and the others reached the food processing plant, they heard the roars of zombies and the sounds of a battle in the distance.
At the sound, the three of them quickened their pace, rushing toward the food processing plant at top speed.
Along the way, Moira Lynch used her spiritual power to assess the situation up ahead.
A squad of Superpower Users was being swarmed by a horde of zombies, and Hugh Finch was among them.
Moira Lynch turned to Kai York. "Kai York, you’re the fastest. Go now and get everyone out of there first."
Kai York nodded, said, "Got it," and his body shot forward in a streak of cyan light.
A few seconds later, a massive tornado formed inside the food processing plant.
Soon, the tornado swept up the survivors and began moving outward. All the zombies in its path were sent flying.
A few minutes later, Kai York led the people he’d rescued to a safe location. Moira Lynch and Shane Rhodes arrived right after.
When the two of them arrived, they saw a group of people on the ground, retching violently. Not far from them, Hugh Finch was pinning Kai York down and pummeling him, each punch landing with a solid thud.
He was cursing up a storm as he threw the punches; it was clear he was genuinely furious.
"Captain, a few of our guys got scratched."
As Moira Lynch tore her gaze away from the two, someone spoke in a grim voice.
The initial joy of having narrowly escaped the zombie horde was instantly shattered, replaced by a wave of profound grief.
When going out on missions, even though they always knew a day like this might come, they still couldn’t accept it when it finally arrived.
"How many of our men?" a subdued voice asked.
"Eight. Two of them only got their skin broken," the man added pointedly.
But in this post-apocalyptic world, there was no difference between a minor scratch and a fatal wound.
"Captain, kill us. We don’t want to turn into zombies."
"Yeah, that’s right. Kill us, quickly. We don’t want to become those mindless monsters."
The injured men wore expressions of grim determination, as if they would commit suicide without a second thought if their captain didn’t act.
Seeing them preparing to part in life and death stirred something in Moira Lynch’s heart.
"You know, sometimes I’m actually glad we’re dealing with natural disasters and not zombies."
Hearing Moira’s wry comment, Shane Rhodes chuckled. "Are you really comparing them? That’s like asking someone to choose between going to work and going to school."
At his words, Moira Lynch recalled some unpleasant memories and clicked her tongue. "Tsk."
"Stop with the dark humor! Moira, go save them!"
Hugh Finch’s voice reached her ears.
Glancing at the two who were still beating each other up in the distance, Moira Lynch started walking toward the injured men.
’Actually, I would’ve saved them even if Hugh hadn’t said anything.’
Seeing Moira Lynch approach, the man they called Captain nodded to her. "Thank you for saving us today."
Moira Lynch nodded. "You’re welcome. If you’re going to help, you should see it through. Let me heal your wounds and, while I’m at it, cure the poison."
As she spoke, eight balls of flame flew toward the injured men.
Seeing Moira Lynch’s actions, the man reacted instantly. "You’re the healer from Dawnlight Base."
"I’m that famous already?" Moira Lynch said, pleasantly surprised.
The man didn’t answer her question, instead saying with surprise, "I can’t believe they were willing to let you leave the base."
Moira Lynch shrugged. "I’m a free agent. I leave whenever I want."
Sensing that Moira Lynch didn’t feel a strong sense of belonging to Dawnlight Base, the man’s eyes shifted. He suddenly extended a hand. "Hello, my name is Mark Rhodes. I’m from the Western Base, and I’d like to invite you to join us."
"I know you currently charge one hundred Crystal Cores per person for treatment. If you’re willing to come to our base, we’ll pay you two hundred."
Mark Rhodes’s tone was incredibly sincere.
Just then, Hugh Finch walked over. "We have a matter we’d like to discuss with you."
Seeing Hugh Finch’s serious expression, Moira Lynch had a good idea of what he was about to say.
Her gaze fell on Mark Rhodes again. ’Could he be like Barry Wallace? A person of high status?’
As it turned out, Mark Rhodes was indeed a person of high status—noble in the truest sense of the word.
He was the son of the Western Base’s leader.
It was important to note that while there were many bases on the planet now, most were private. There were only four official bases, named after the cardinal directions: South, East, North, and West.
As the son of the Western Base’s leader, it wasn’t an exaggeration to call Mark Rhodes a crown prince.
"So you’re saying you’re aliens. How do you prove that?" Mark Rhodes looked at the four people before him. If this weren’t the apocalypse, he’d have suspected they had just escaped from a mental hospital.
Moira and her group didn’t get angry at his skepticism. After all, if someone had popped up and claimed to be an alien to them, they’d probably have written them off as crazy, too.
"Those eight team members who were injured are all ordinary people, right?" Moira Lynch said with a smile. "I can help them awaken their superpowers. Will that be enough to convince you? You have to admit, right now, your people only awaken through sheer luck."
Seeing the certainty in Moira Lynch’s eyes, Mark Rhodes nodded. "Fine. If you can really do that, then I’ll believe you."
Moira Lynch created eight bottles of Awakening Potion out of thin air and handed them to Mark Rhodes.
"Have those eight men drink this Medicine. They’ll awaken their powers."
