Apocalypse Arrives: I Become a Powerhouse by Scavenging
Chapter 600 - 590: Sound Source Pollution 42
Hearing Moira Lynch say this, Professor Wallace’s expression still fell with disappointment, even though he had already guessed the answer.
However, this feeling didn’t last long. ’Just because these people can’t do it doesn’t mean we can’t.’
Besides, compared to an unsolvable natural disaster, his planet’s situation was relatively optimistic.
As long as they dealt with all the mutated monsters, they would be safe.
At least, that was how it seemed for now.
"Even so, I want to get more useful information from you. For example, the abilities we’re awakening, and matters concerning the world beyond this planet—we want to know everything."
"Furthermore, I know from Barry’s memories that you’re here on a survival mission. I can help you complete it, on the condition that I get the information you possess."
After Professor Wallace finished speaking, Moira Lynch looked to Hugh Finch, asking for his opinion.
Hugh Finch nodded.
Seeing this, Moira Lynch said, "I can tell you, but not right now. At the very least, I won’t give you anything until our mission is complete."
Hearing this, Professor Wallace was happy at first, but then he frowned and asked, "When will your mission be complete?"
"I don’t know. It will be complete when it’s meant to be. Of course, you can come ask me any questions you have in the meantime."
’After all, there are still several days left in the mission. I can’t just give him no incentive at all.’
Besides, there was another reason Moira Lynch chose not to hand over the information right away: she needed to organize the data first.
Directly pouring knowledge into someone’s brain, like she had done before, wasn’t something that could be done casually.
The meditation method was relatively simple, and Moira Lynch was vastly more powerful than Barry Wallace, which was why it had been so easy.
But this current situation was clearly different from before.
The previously dejected Professor Wallace perked up instantly upon hearing this. "You’re willing to answer all my questions?"
"Of course not. I’m not an encyclopedia." Moira Lynch gave him a look that said, ’You’re dreaming.’
"I’ll naturally answer what I know. As for what I don’t know, I couldn’t answer even if I wanted to."
After some discussion, the group reached an initial agreement to cooperate.
Moira Lynch’s group asked Professor Wallace and his son to keep their identities a secret.
At the very least, they were to maintain secrecy until the mission was complete.
Professor Wallace did not refuse this request.
He could tell that if he refused, Moira Lynch’s group would not hesitate to kill them to silence them.
Based on what he had witnessed earlier, he understood that everyone here combined was likely no match for these people.
The convoy set out once more.
Moira Lynch and the other two were invited into Professor Wallace’s vehicle.
"Oh, right, Professor. When you called us over before, you said you had a new discovery. What was it?"
Moira Lynch suddenly remembered the reason they had come here and asked.
At this, Professor Wallace also remembered.
"It’s like this. Ever since the ’noise sickness’ appeared, I’ve detected a strange sound wave that suddenly appeared in the air. This sound wave has a huge impact on the natives of this planet—for instance, it makes our personalities more impulsive."
"Everyone’s constitution is different, so the degree to which they are affected by this sound wave varies."
"But as time went on, the sound wave grew stronger and stronger, affecting nearly everyone. In my original projection, almost everyone here would have been affected, eventually contracting the noise sickness, and finally being driven mad by its torment."
"Originally? What about now?" Moira Lynch asked.
Professor Wallace pondered for a moment before saying, "Now... you’ve probably noticed that the mutated monsters have a tendency to eat people. They even treat us as food."
"According to my research, these monsters are likely the people who suffered most severely from the noise sickness. Although they retain their intelligence now, they’ve lost all reason and are left with only animalistic instinct. And animals are masters of assessing risk and reward."
Hearing this, Moira Lynch and the others basically understood what Professor Wallace meant.
In the natural world, almost no creature preys on humans, and the reason is simple: humanity is an incredibly vindictive species.
On Caelus, no matter how precious or rare an animal was, if it had eaten a human, it would be hunted down and killed.
Moreover, humans were more formidable than one might think, to say nothing of the fact that all normal people had now awakened abilities.
Since those monsters retained their intelligence, they should understand that humans are not their ideal prey.
For them to still choose to hunt humans for food under these circumstances, there could only be one possibility: eating people brought them some kind of unexpected benefit.
For some reason, Moira Lynch once again recalled the words of that man from before.
’The antidote?’
’Was he referring to them? Or to all people?’
...
Because of her earlier promise, Professor Wallace and Barry Wallace were now each holding a notebook, staring intently at her.
By now, their notebooks were already filled with notes, and Moira Lynch’s mouth was dry from talking, but the two of them showed no signs of letting her go.
Especially after learning from his son that Moira Lynch might have the Awakening Potion, the clever Professor Wallace immediately made another connection.
’These three people in front of me... could they be the ’Master’ the higher-ups are looking for?’
’Yes, that must be it. Such miraculous methods, and the ability to vanish into thin air—it’s simply not something achievable at their current level of technology.’
That incident had caused quite a stir back then. Those people suffered a crushing defeat and came away empty-handed.
The official who had tried to blackmail the Master back then had long since been removed from office and put under investigation.
At this thought, a fervent heat rose in Professor Wallace’s heart.
He had also seen that video of the severed finger being healed.
If he hadn’t confirmed that the video was real and hadn’t been edited in any way, he would have suspected it was fake.
Night fell, and the main convoy halted once again. People set about their tasks—some resting, some starting fires, some cooking dinner.
Moira Lynch finally got a moment of peace and found a quiet spot to eat.
Seeing this, Kai York sidled up to her, his tone teasing. "This is the first time I’ve ever seen you be so talkative."
In response, Moira Lynch rolled her eyes at him. She didn’t want to say another word. She had said more today than she usually did in a month.
Just then, Hugh Finch walked over.
Given what had happened the previous night, it was decided that two people would take turns on watch tonight.
That’s right, just two people: Hugh Finch would take the first watch, and Kai York would take the second.
"Then what about Moira?" Kai York asked, pointing at Moira Lynch.
