Rowan didn't wait for Kaelen to voice another doubt. He knelt beside the junior handler, slipping the loops of the hemp drag-litter under Kaelen's arms and securing them across his chest.

"Keep your legs straight," Rowan said, his voice dry and raspy. "If the litter tilts, lean toward the rock face. Do not let your boots drag in the mud."

Kaelen nodded, his teeth set tightly together as he gripped the hemp handles with white knuckles. He was shivering despite the sweltering ambient heat, his skin clammy with the onset of acute shock, but he forced his eyes open and stayed focused on Rowan.

Rowan stood, loop straps wrapped twice around his calcified leather work gloves.

Before taking a step, he turned toward the steaming mud-flat and activated the adaptation.

***[ ACTIVATING: [Endothermic Mucosal Secretion] ]***

State: Active Draw

The pale, raised lines across his chest and shoulders tightened. A sharp, cold sting shot through his subcutaneous tissue as his rewritten dermal pores forced the dual-compound medium to the surface. The liquid phase-shifted instantly upon meeting the scorching sulfur air, erupting into a thick, frost-cold mist that blanketed his torso, arms, and neck.

The immediate relief was undeniable. The scorching thermal updraft hitting his chest felt as if it had passed over an ice sheet.

But the physical cost was immediate.

Rowan felt a sudden, deep pull in his abdomen—a sharp, hollow ache as his body drew on its remaining water reserves to synthesize the chemical medium. His mouth felt instantly drier, his tongue sticking to the roof of his palate. His bruised right shoulder and cracked ribs throbbed in rhythm with his hammering pulse.

He stepped off the limestone ledge and onto the scalding crust.

His boot hit the gray shale surface. He didn't just walk; he consciously channeled the endothermic secretion downward toward his legs and feet, letting the heavy frost-mist roll down his trousers to coat his boots. Where his foot touched, the gray crust hissed. A thin skin of cooled, hardened mud formed beneath his sole, just enough to bear his weight for a moment before the heat beneath began chewing back through it.

He took a second step. Then a third.

"It's holding," Rowan muttered, his voice barely audible over the dull thrum of the geothermal vents.

He leaned into the hemp harness, hauling Kaelen's drag-litter off the ledge. The iron-wood splints beneath the litter scraped over the crusted mud, sliding along the narrow trail of cooled ground Rowan left in his wake before it softened again behind them.

Twenty yards out, the true difficulty became clear.

Level 1 [Endothermic Mucosal Secretion] was not a weapon against the rift itself. It was a localized, high-cost heat exchanger, meant to protect his own skin, not to reshape the ground beneath him. Rowan could not blast a path of solid footing across the entire sinkhole. The hardened crust he left beneath his boots was thin and short-lived, and the intense heat of the deep vents broke through it within a few seconds of his passing.

He had to keep moving. If he paused for more than a couple of seconds on a single spot, the heat would push past his chilled soles and start cooking his boots.

"Rowan... left!" Kaelen called out from behind, his voice strained as he lifted his chest off the litter to watch the path. "Vent bubbling... five feet ahead!"

Rowan adjusted his stride instantly. A dark fissure in the crust was spewing a steady jet of boiling black mud. Instead of trying to step over it, Rowan veered left, planting his foot on a slightly raised mound of mineral ash.

He pushed his adaptation harder, forcing a fresh surge of frost-mist down his right leg. The ash cooled and stiffened just enough to hold. Rowan stepped across, pulling the litter behind him just as the mound gave way and collapsed back into the slurry with a wet glop.

Sweat ran down Rowan's face—not from the external heat, but from the sheer metabolic strain of fueling the compilation. Every step felt like dragging his boots through wet cement. His breath came in short, ragged gasps that came out as white steam in the sulfur haze.

Fifty yards.

The mud-flat widened, the crust growing thinner and darker. The sulfur gas was thicker here, clinging to the ground in dense, gray clouds that stung Rowan's eyes and made them water profusely.

"Rowan..." Kaelen's voice was growing fainter. "The rope... it's fraying..."

Rowan glanced down over his shoulder. The hemp line dragging the litter was scraping over sharp edges of crusted shale. The outer strands were scorched, turning black where they touched patches of mud that hadn't been fully cooled.

If the rope snapped, Kaelen would be stranded on the open flat.

Rowan shortened his grip on the hemp lines instead of stopping, pulling Kaelen closer to his heels.

A hundred yards out—halfway across—they hit the main sinkhole drain.

A twelve-foot-wide trough of open, boiling mud cut directly across their path, fed by two massive geothermal steam vents on either side. The black slurry wasn't crusted here; it was a churning, spitting cauldron of liquid sulfur and mineral ash.

Rowan stopped three feet from the edge, his boots digging into a narrow ridge of solid limestone.

The heat rising from the trough was blinding. Even with his endothermic mist active, the skin on his face felt tight and stretched, blisters forming along his jawline.

"There's no crust," Kaelen rasped, squinting through the steam. "Rowan... we can't step in that."

Rowan looked to the left. A wall of sheer, crumbling shale rose forty feet into the sulfur haze—no foothold. He looked to the right. The trough widened into a broad, bubbling lake of liquid mud.

The only way was straight through.

Rowan looked down at the churning slurry. In the middle of the trough, three feet below the surface, lay a submerged ledge of fallen limestone—a stepping stone dropped during the original cave collapse. The boiling mud was flowing directly over it, only two inches deep over the rock.

That ledge was the only way across. His adaptation couldn't freeze a path through open, flowing mud twelve feet wide—it could only buy him the handful of seconds he'd need standing on solid rock beneath the surface.

"Hang on," Rowan said.

"Rowan, no—"

Rowan didn't argue. He focused his mind, deliberately forcing a harder draw than he'd used all crossing, pushing his body to secrete far more than felt safe.

Warning: High Hydration Draw — Extreme Dehydration Risk

A dense cloud of white frost-mist erupted from Rowan's legs and boots. He stepped directly into the boiling mud over the submerged stone.

The reaction was violent. The boiling mud hissed loudly, a plume of white steam shooting into the air as the endothermic secretion hit the slurry. The liquid mud around his boots curdled for an instant, thickening into a slushy, half-hardened crust just long enough to take his weight.

The heat tried to break through immediately, scorching the leather of his boots, but Rowan drove his foot down onto the submerged limestone beneath the muck, planting his weight firm before the crust could give way.

"Lean back!" Rowan roared, his voice cracking from the effort.

He yanked the drag-litter with both arms.

The iron-wood splints of Kaelen's litter skidded across the half-frozen slush. The heat below ate through it almost as fast as Rowan's mist could lay it down, but the momentum carried Kaelen across the twelve-foot trough before the mud could swallow the wood.

Rowan lunged forward, planting his left boot on the far bank of the trough and driving his right knee into the solid rock of the southern shelf.

He pulled with everything he had left.

Kaelen's litter cleared the mud, slamming onto the cool, dark limestone of the southern ledge.

Rowan tumbled onto his side beside the litter, his lungs burning, his chest heaving as the adaptation guttered and cut out, his body unable to sustain the draw any longer.

Rowan lay on the cold stone for a long minute, his chest rising and falling in shallow, ragged gasps. The pale blue text floated briefly before his eyes before fading into the dark.

He didn't care about the level increase. He cared about the air.

The air on the southern shelf was cold.

A steady, fresh updraft was pushing through a narrow crevice in the limestone wall, carrying away the heavy sulfur smoke and bringing the crisp, damp smell of wet earth and mountain water. The dark green moss clinging to the stone wall above them was dripping with clean, clear condensation.

Kaelen was lying on his back beside him, staring up at the dark ceiling, a weak, disbelieving laugh escaping his throat.

"We... we crossed..." Kaelen whispered, his voice trembling. "Rowan... we actually crossed it..."

Rowan slowly pushed himself up onto his elbows, his body trembling from metabolic exhaustion. His right shoulder throbbed viciously, his throat felt like it was lined with sandpaper, and his skin was covered in a dry, white salt-crust left behind by the compilation.

He looked back across the mud-flat.

Two hundred yards away, the shallow alcove where they had started was completely filled with thick, gray sulfur smoke. If they had stayed there another thirty minutes, they would have suffocated in the dark.

Rowan looked up at the wet moss on the limestone wall above them. A tiny trickle of clean water was pooling in a natural stone basin six feet up.

They had made it across the heat trap. They had cooler air, clean water, and a stable ledge.

Rowan reached out, resting his hand against the cold, wet limestone wall.

The crossing was done, but as he looked deeper into the dark, shadowed tunnels extending south into the Living Basin, he heard something new.

Not the hiss of steam, and not the bubble of mud.

Deep in the cavern shadows beyond the water pool, low, rhythmic breathing vibrated through the stone beneath his fingers.

Rowan's hand tightened against his tracking knife.

They had survived the environment. Now they were no longer alone.
