Chapter 44: The Mid-Gorge Echo[Book 2]
The metallic click of the tendon snare setting into the basalt shelf was the cleanest sound in the Upper Thermal Faults.
Rowan Miller didn’t look down as he wedged the iron anchor pin into the granite seam. He sat back on his heels, resting his weight against his haunches, and pulled his dark leather wraps tight over his forearms. Underneath the boiled hide, the slate-gray plates of his skin shifted with a dry, rhythmic scraping—calcified scale-grain settling into alignment under load.
Below the overhang of Camp Overlook, three miles of thermal mist lay pinned against the floor of the Living Basin like wet wool.
"Anchor's set," Rowan said. His voice was lower than it had been two months ago, raspy around the edges from the constant cataloging of sulfurous vapor in the back of his throat. "It'll hold sixty pounds of dried meat if we drop a shelf line from the crevice."
Behind him, inside the dry basalt alcove they had chosen for their gear vault, Kaelen grunted as he shifted a crate of salvaged Vane-Hollow iron pitons. The sound was followed by the uneven, heavy scrape of Kaelen’s left leg dragging across the grit.
"Sixty pounds assumes we find sixty pounds of game that doesn't melt the snare line," Kaelen said. He stepped out into the gray daylight, resting his palm against the rock wall for balance. His left tibia was bound tight in split-shale splints and oiled tendon wrap—healed enough to bear weight on flat rock, but still not ready for heavy packs down wet chutes. He squinted out toward the Basin horizon, his pale eyes tracking the thermal updrafts. "The lower terraces have been empty since Tuesday."
Rowan stood up smoothly. His center of gravity sat lower now, anchored by the extra density in his long bones and the heavy, shock-absorbing muscle weave across his lower back. He raised his left hand, shading his eyes, and let his vision narrow.
The diagnostic overlay didn't flash. It sat underneath his conscious sight like a quiet layer of tinted glass, waiting for focus.

His Form Stability hovered around thirty-two percent. The number hadn't moved since the last time they checked. The seven integrated components inside his chest, neck, skin, and limbs functioned—they kept him alive, kept him breathing through caustic gas, kept him climbing bare-handed where iron pitons pulled free—but they functioned like seven separate men pulling a heavy wagon in seven slightly different directions.

They didn't cohere.
Rowan focused his sight past the mist, out toward the mid-gorge terrace six miles to the southeast.
Far past the sheer drops of the Lower Faults, thin, dark plumes of black smoke rose straight into the cold air. They weren't the dirty gray fires of wet timber or the blue-white steam of geothermal vents. They were coal-black, thick with burning fat and chemical accelerants—the signature fires of a Vane-Hollow extraction squad clearing a harvest shelf.
"They're burning the carcasses," Rowan murmured.
Kaelen leaned harder against his support leg, watching the smoke. "Corvus Vane doesn't waste time. The trade was twelve mature matriarchs. If they're burning the waste frames today, it means they've cleared the shelf."
"Twelve Mire-Stalker matriarchs," Rowan said softly. He looked down at his scale-plated palm, flexing the thick, micro-spined knuckles. "Twelve apex predators stripped out of a single mid-gorge terrace."
"It was the trade, Rowan," Kaelen said, his voice flat, neutral with the practical discipline of a former Vane-Hollow handler. "It stopped Operation Clear-Gorge. It kept Corvus from dumping three hundred barrels of defoliant into the upper catchment. The Ridge has water for another season."
"The Ridge has water today," Rowan corrected. He turned his forearm over, examining the junction where the slate scales met the softer, paler tissue at his wrist. He pressed a thumb against the plate. The passive [Calcified Epidermal Layer] reacted immediately to the localized pressure, micro-scale ridges interlocking with a tiny, dry click to distribute the force across the underlying fascia. "Ecology isn't an iron ledger, Kaelen. You don't subtract twelve apex hunters from an isolated shelf and expect the lower rifts to stay silent."
"You think something else moves into the shelf?"
"I think the Mire-Stalkers weren't eating air down there," Rowan said. "They were eating whatever lives in the deep shale drainage beneath the terrace."
Kaelen didn't answer. He turned back toward the vault, picking up a wooden spade they had carved from iron-fir timber, and began clearing loose shale from the storage alcove floor.
Rowan watched him for a moment. Kaelen had changed too, though not in his flesh. The Vane-Hollow contract token that used to hang from his belt was gone—thrown into the thermal abyss above Hoist-Tower 4 three weeks ago. His movements were deliberate, disciplined, driven by a quiet refusal to be left behind as a useless invalid while Rowan built their shelter. They were partners now, unbound by guild wages or corporate oversight, surviving on what they could hunt, salvage, and engineer.
Rowan walked to the edge of the granite ledge, picking up a fifty-pound slab of loose basalt they had hauled up for the hearth wall. He lifted it with one arm, letting the [Tendon Leverage Surge] anchor through his hip and core without actively drawing Energy. His muscles adjusted effortlessly to the load, the calcified plates along his spine taking the weight.
He set the slab into place against the shelter wall.
The architecture is built, he thought, repeating the words he had spoken to himself at the edge of the Rim horizon. Now I have to learn how to live in it.
Then, deep beneath his boots, the stone vibrated.
It wasn't the slow, heavy thrum of a volcanic pulse, nor the sharp cracking shock of a rockfall in the lower gorges. It was a rhythmic, rasping acoustic echo—a high-pitched, wet grinding sound that traveled straight up through the vertical shale drainage pipe that supplied Camp Overlook’s fresh-water basin.
Rowan froze, his scaled fingers still resting on the basalt slab.
The air in the shelter shifted. A faint, sharp odor rose from the drainage chute—not the warm, rotten-egg smell of natural Basin sulfur, but a bitter, metallic stench that made the mucosal pores across his chest contract violently.
"Rowan?" Kaelen dropped the wooden spade, his hand dropping instantly to the heavy hunting knife at his hip. "What was that?"
Rowan stepped toward the narrow rock fissure where clear mountain runoff usually trickled into their stone catch-basin. He knelt, hovering his hand two inches above the water's surface.
A second acoustic rasp vibrated up through the dark rock—louder this time, closer, accompanied by the distinct sound of stone dissolving under a boiling chemical wash.
Rowan watched the clear water in the catch-basin turn a milky, acrid gray.
"Get the gear packs," Rowan said, his voice dropping into the cold, clinical rhythm of a field diagnostic. "The mid-gorge echo isn't coming from the terrace. It's coming up through our well."
