Apex Biomass [Biological Engineering LitRPG] - Book 1 — complete
Chapter 42 The Seventh Component [ Bonus chapter]
The steam rolling off the collapse didn't smell of sulfur anymore. It smelled of rendered fat, scorched minerals, and the biting, metallic tang of unreacted Ash-Scour.
Rowan stood at the edge of the rubble field, his boots resting on a narrow shelf of cold basalt. Ahead of him, the lower drainage chute—their only viable retreat path down toward the Living Basin—was buried under eight feet of steaming, chemical-soaked shale and crushed ironwood timbers.
The alchemical defoliant leaking from the destroyed sled above had settled into the blockage. Yellow, caustic foam bubbled violently where the liquid touched the heated rock, dissolving the organic binders in the shale and turning the entire pile into a sloughing, unstable morass. Every few seconds, another slab of stone would liquefy at the base, causing the top of the mound to settle with a wet, heavy thud.
Behind them, the dormant Gorge-Gorgon filled the western trench, its cool mud-slurry blocking any return up the fault line. Above them, the sheer walls of the gorge offered no handholds for a man carrying an injured companion.
"The shale's saturated," Kaelen said, his voice strained as he wedged the wooden tip of his crutch into a dry crevice behind Rowan. He leaned forward, squinting through the dense white vapor. "If we try to climb over that, the top layer will slide. The moment your boot breaks the surface crust, you'll drop up to your knees in boiling lye."
"We can't climb over it," Rowan agreed flatly. He pulled his right glove off with his teeth, exposing the dark, scale-armored flesh of his hand. He held his palm four inches above the nearest pool of gray, bubbling runoff.
Even without direct physical contact, the radiant heat and caustic fumes made the skin along his wrist sting. His [Calcified Epidermal Layer] offered dense abrasion resistance against physical impact, but corrosive caustics and saponifying solvents were a completely different hazard. The chemical agent was designed to break down biological lipids. It would melt the connective tissue between his calcified scales just as easily as it dissolved the cell walls of the ironwood trees.
"If we don't clear the main drainage channel," Kaelen added, pointing toward a narrow rock seam at the base of the left wall, "the runoff isn't going to stay pooled here. It's slowly backing up. In twenty minutes, the water level behind that shale dam will blow out the side wall and dump the whole chemical spill straight into the lower spring."
Rowan reached into the oiled canvas bundle he had secured on the upper terrace.
He unrolled the heavy fabric. Inside lay the harvested specimen of the Caustic-Silt Fern. Its thick, rubbery green fronds were still cool to the touch, and its bulbous, purple root-node glistened with a light coating of translucent, viscous fluid.
Rowan brought the plant up to eye level, adjusting his vision as his internal Bio-Compiler analyzed the specimen's physical structure.
Back on the upper terrace, he had observed the anomaly: while all other plant life liquefied under the Ash-Scour spray, this fern survived in the immediate splash zone. It didn't possess thick, impenetrable bark, nor was it shielded by stone.
Now, examining the damaged edge of the root-node where his knife had severed it, the biological mechanism became clear.
The fern didn't fight the caustic solvent with passive density. When the solvent touched its outer cuticle, specialized sub-dermal glands instantly released a dense, lipid-rich secretion. That secretion reacted with the aggressive caustic chemistry right at the surface, breaking it down into an inert, slippery gray soap residue before it could reach the living cells beneath.
Rowan thought, his eyes tracking the micro-glandular structures embedded along the fern's vascular walls. My body already has the fluid distribution network from [Endothermic Mucosal Secretion]. The sub-dermal channels are already laid. I don't need to build a new delivery system—I just need to anchor a new secretory cuticle into the existing dermal pores.
He closed his fingers around the purple root-node, crushing the plant's glandular core between his scale-plated palm and his thumb.
Viscous, pale fluid squeezed through his fingers. Rowan smeared the raw biological material directly over the gray, calcified plates of his left forearm, pressing his skin close to the specimen as his internal compiler initiated a deep structural analysis.
A pale blue interface prompt flickered across the dark margin of his vision:

***Resource Cost: High Energy Draw / High Hydration Reserve / Biological Feedstock Required***
"Rowan?" Kaelen asked, watching the strange, rigid intensity that had taken over Rowan's face. "What are you doing with that root?"
"Building the tool," Rowan said quietly.
He didn't wait. He fed the crushed remains of the root-node into the compilation as feedstock, and felt the Bio-Compiler draw hard on his Energy reserves to drive the integration.
Initiate Bio-Compile, he commanded silently.
The physical reaction hit him like a slow, localized fire.
It wasn't the sudden, tearing agony of his initial calcified scale integration in the lower pits, but the visceral strain was absolute. Deep beneath his epidermis—along his forearms, his chest, his neck, and the backs of his legs—the sub-dermal capillary beds began to shift and re-anchor. Microscopic secretory nodes, modeled directly after the fern's vascular glands, sprouted along the edges of his existing mucosal channels.
Rowan gasped, his knees buckling slightly as his core body temperature spiked. Sweat poured from his forehead, instantly vaporizing in the hot steam surrounding them. His hydration reserves plummeted as his body synthesized the complex lipid-proteins required to fill the new sub-dermal reservoirs.

He gripped the basalt wall for support, his [Tendon Leverage Surge] locking his elbow joint to keep him upright as his nervous system registered thousands of tiny, needle-like pricks along his skin. The slate-gray scales on his forearms shifted slightly, their calcified edges lifting to allow the newly formed micro-glands to settle into the dermal seams beneath.
For sixty agonizing seconds, Rowan stood motionless, listening to the heavy, violent thud of his own heart as his body synthesized the new biological component.
Then, the burning sensation receded into a dull, cold ache.
Along the gray plating of his arms and hands, a fine, glistening sheen of translucent, pale fluid began to seep from the edges of his scales. It smelled faintly of bitter minerals and cold chalk.
Rowan took a slow, deep breath. His [Nasopharyngeal Catalytic Filter] stabilized his breathing, though his throat felt as dry as bone from the extreme metabolic hydration cost.
A brilliant gold interface prompt burst across his vision, overriding the dim blue text:

Rowan stared at the gold text suspended in the darkness of his mind.
He didn't evolve. There was no sudden surge of explosive, god-like power, no dramatic physical metamorphosis into a higher form. The Tier 2 gateway was standing right in front of him, clearly visible for the first time, but its lock was absolute.
"Rowan?" Kaelen's voice broke his focus, tight with urgency. "The rock seam on the left wall just cracked! The water's rising!"
Rowan blinked, letting the gold interface window fade into the background of his vision.
"I'm ready," Rowan said.
He stepped off the basalt ledge, walking directly toward the steaming, yellow-tinged pool of Ash-Scour runoff at the base of the collapse.
"Wait! Rowan, no!" Kaelen yelled, reaching out a hand, but he was too far back on his crutch to stop him.
Rowan thrust both forearms directly into the boiling, caustic puddle.
The reaction was instant, violent, and loud.
The boiling caustic solvent hissed as it struck his skin, but instead of eating through his flesh, the newly integrated [Saponification Dermal Cuticle] activated reflexively. The pale, lipid-rich fluid weeping from beneath his scales met the yellow Ash-Scour solvent head-on. Right at the surface of his skin, the aggressive chemical turned milky white, curdling into a thick, harmless, slippery gray soap residue that washed off his forearms without burning the underlying tissue.
He felt heat—an intense, thrumming warmth from the chemical reaction taking place on his skin—but there was no chemical burn. The cell walls held.
It works, Rowan thought, a cold, sharp feeling of triumph settling in his chest. It saponifies on contact.
He didn't waste time marveling at it.
Rowan plunged his arms deeper into the collapse, using his [Tendon Leverage Surge] to recruit the high-tensile flexor loops in his forearms. He grabbed a massive, two-hundred-pound slab of chemical-soaked shale that was wedged directly across the main drainage gutter.
His [Micro-Spine Friction Grip] engaged, the microscopic chitinous hooks on his palms biting through the slippery, soapy slurry to lock onto the wet stone.
"Kaelen!" Rowan called out over the roar of the steam, his muscles straining as he lifted the heavy boulder six inches off the floor. "The small shale fragments behind the main slab—clear them with your crutch handle! Don't let them fall into the open gutter!"
Kaelen didn't ask how Rowan's hands weren't melting. He limped forward to the very edge of the dry ledge, extending his wooden crutch. Using the heavy handle like a hook, Kaelen expertly wedged loose chunks of gravel away from the drainage channel as Rowan hauled the massive slab out of the mud.
With a heavy, wet CLACK, Rowan threw the massive shale slab to the side, clearing the primary bottleneck.
A pent-up torrent of dark, muddy water and dissolved chemical slurry instantly erupted through the cleared opening, rushing down the lower drainage channel.
"Not that way!" Kaelen shouted, pointing his crutch toward the right-hand fork. "The right channel leads into the dead mineral sink! The left channel goes to the lower watercourse!"
Rowan instantly stepped into the rushing stream, using his own scale-covered legs and the secondary shale slabs as a physical dam. He dropped two more large boulders into the left channel, wedging them tight with gravel until the caustic runoff was completely diverted into the right-hand mineral sink—a dead-end underground cavern where the contaminated runoff could be contained, well away from the lower watercourse.
For ten minutes, they worked in brutal, coordinated harmony.
Rowan hauled the heavy, chemical-dripping rubble out of the way, his new saponification cuticle protecting his flesh while his friction grip and tendon surge provided the physical power. Kaelen directed the flow, using his precise geographical understanding of the fault lines to ensure not a single gallon of chemical runoff breached the lower watercourse barrier.
By the time the last major obstruction was cleared, the water level behind the rubble dam had dropped to a trickle.
The main exit path through the lower drainage chute was open, clear, and safe to walk.
Rowan pulled his arms out of the runoff, stepping back onto the dry basalt floor beside Kaelen.
He was utterly exhausted. His breathing was heavy, his chest heaving beneath his scorched, chemical-stained clothes, and his body felt completely hollowed out from the extreme metabolic and hydration demands of the Bio-Compile. The pale, saponifying fluid on his arms slowly dried into a thin, white, chalky residue that flaked away in the cool breeze blowing up from the basin.
Kaelen leaned heavily on his crutch, looking at Rowan's bare, scale-plated forearms, then at the open drainage chute leading down the mountain.
"Your hands..." Kaelen said softly, his voice full of quiet, un-varnished awe. "The chemical didn't touch them."
Rowan looked down at his grey, scaled right hand, flexing his fingers slowly. The micro-spines on his palm retracted with a soft, barely audible rustle.
"It touched them," Rowan said quietly, his voice dry. "It just couldn't break them."
He pulled his leather glove back over his right hand, covering the slate-gray scales.
Ahead of them, the lower drainage chute opened out onto the final terrace above Camp Overlook. The morning sun was just breaking over the eastern peaks of the Rim, casting long, golden rays of light across the quiet, glowing expanse of the Living Basin below.
Rowan adjusted the strap of his rucksack over his shoulder, turning to Kaelen.
"Let's go home," Rowan said.
As they began their slow descent down the dry chute, the persistent gold indicator of the Tier 2 interface hummed quietly in the corner of Rowan's vision—a silent, unyielding reminder of the long, hard road of biological mastery that lay ahead.
