Chapter 582: Chapter 484: Livestreaming Accident

After more than a month, he was finally back in Nanjiang.

After getting off the highway, he didn’t report to the city bureau. He went straight home.

He dropped Ding Yuwei off at her place first.

The moment she opened the door, a calico cat shot out.

It was one of Da Mei’s kittens.

It grabbed Ding Yuwei’s pant leg and let out a series of urgent meows, as if asking where she had run off to and if she had forgotten all about it.

They had been away on business for so long that they’d had Zhao Tianxing come over and feed it.

"Benben, do you still remember me?" Shen Xin reached out and picked it up.

When the little guy was nursing, it always had trouble finding the right spot, so after Ding Yuwei adopted it, she named it Benben.

With a MEOW, it struggled out of Shen Xin’s arms and hid behind Ding Yuwei’s legs.

Its claws were sharp, and the scratch hurt.

"So you don’t recognize me, huh? I’ll have your mom and dad teach you a lesson later," Shen Xin threatened menacingly.

But he figured Da Mei probably didn’t even remember her three kittens anymore.

As for Evil Bully, he was the love-’em-and-leave-’em type. In his feline life, the concept of "children" didn’t exist.

At the mention of this, Ding Yuwei suddenly grew nervous. She hesitated, "Shen Xin, I’m a little scared. Maybe we should do this another time."

His family knew he was coming back today.

More importantly, they also knew that he and Ding Yuwei had made their relationship official.

Zeng Wenxi was so happy she wanted to run to a temple and make an offering to fulfill a vow.

And so, she had told Shen Xin to bring Ding Yuwei to dinner that evening for a formal meeting.

"Don’t worry, it’s not like it’s the first time you’re meeting them. Doesn’t my mom video call you all the time? You’re practically old friends," Shen Xin said, pulling Ding Yuwei down to sit on the sofa.

Ding Yuwei swatted away Shen Xin’s restless hand in annoyance. "That’s easy for you to say, but this is the first time in person. I’m afraid..."

Before she could finish, Shen Xin tackled her onto the sofa.

"You’re afraid, huh? How about we have a little ’lesson’ first?"

During their time in Dian Nan, they had already confirmed their relationship. They were young and full of passion, and they certainly didn’t skimp on safety precautions.

MEOW.

Benben, ever the loyal protector, jumped onto the sofa and pawed at Shen Xin.

Ding Yuwei pushed Shen Xin away and started mentally going through her wardrobe.

She normally lived a simple life, and her clothes were chosen for comfort and practicality. Now she was thinking she needed to go out and buy something new.

Shen Xin said it wasn’t necessary.

Ding Yuwei chided him, "No, that won’t do. It’s a matter of basic courtesy."

So, she showered, put on some simple makeup, and dragged Shen Xin to a mall to buy clothes.

They also found time to take Teddy and the others back to the city bureau.

When they arrived at the bureau, they happened to run into Zhao Tianxing and his group getting off work.

Seeing Ding Yuwei in a long dress, Zhao Tianxing’s eyes nearly popped out of his head. He exclaimed, "Yuwei, I knew you were pretty, but I never expected you to look like a completely different person when you dress up!"

He then smacked his lips and added, "What a shame. That bastard Shen Xin got lucky."

Yang Zeran nodded in solemn agreement, joking that Ding Yuwei could totally do better and didn’t need to settle for a flawed specimen like Shen Xin.

"Get lost, you two!"

Shen Xin grumpily kicked at them.

Zhao Tianxing and Yang Zeran seized Shen Xin from both sides, refusing to let go until he promised to treat them to a big meal.

They got Teddy and Celestial Skill settled in.

Tian Kui still remembered Celestial Skill, and their reunion was inevitably affectionate.

Celestial Skill didn’t reject Tian Kui’s advances.

Her five little ones had been left at the checkpoint at Celestial Skill’s strong insistence.

So, Celestial Skill was now single.

It felt like sparks could still fly between the two of them.

Riding with the evening rush hour traffic, the pair headed to the restaurant.

It was over by Li Lake, at a place called Junlai Building.

They carried a pile of gifts they had picked out back in Dian Nan.

Just as he entered the lobby, he heard someone call his name.

It was Shen Shuang, waiting for them in the lobby.

In the middle of summer, her outfits were getting more and more revealing. She yanked Shen Xin aside, deftly linked arms with Ding Yuwei, and didn’t even bother to give Shen Xin a proper look.

These past few days, Shen Shuang had been harboring a huge grudge against Shen Xin.

Shen Xin finding a girlfriend was a joyous occasion for everyone, except for Shen Shuang.

Because Zeng Wenxi had started to focus all her fire on her, nagging her to find a boyfriend every day like a chanting monk.

Arguing back was useless, so she could only take her frustration out on Shen Xin.

"What kind of love potion did you give Yuwei, you brat? You really lucked out," Shen Shuang said, twisting Shen Xin’s arm.

Then she looked Ding Yuwei up and down, praising her for being as beautiful as a fairy.

Her words made Ding Yuwei blush.

They entered the private room.

His parents were there, and so were his paternal grandparents.

Zeng Wenxi shot up from her seat, pushed Shen Shuang aside, and pulled Ding Yuwei over to her side with a wide grin, eager to talk.

She asked with concern if the trip was tiring and if Shen Xin had made her do any heavy lifting while they were in Dian Nan.

"Where’s mine?"

After Shen Xin greeted his grandparents and sat down, Shen Shuang held out her hand.

"What’s yours?" Shen Xin asked, confused.

Shen Shuang gestured with her eyes toward Ding Yuwei’s wrist, asking where hers was.

He had bought two bracelets, one for each sibling.

He had given his to Ding Yuwei, which meant hers was the only one left.

Just as Shen Xin was about to speak, Zeng Wenxi started clamoring, grabbing Ding Yuwei’s right hand and demanding to know what had happened.

From that life-or-death struggle, a scar had been left on the palm of Ding Yuwei’s right hand.

Shen Xin flinched and tried to explain, "It’s nothing, just a small injury."

"A small injury?"

Zeng Wenxi’s eyes widened like bronze bells. She reached out to twist Shen Xin’s ear, scolding him for how he had failed to protect Ding Yuwei.

Shen Xin quickly dodged.

Ding Yuwei also hurried to stop her, saying it was nothing, just a very small wound.

Only then did Zeng Wenxi relent, but she warned that if Shen Xin ever let Ding Yuwei get hurt again, she would see how she’d deal with him.

Shen Shuang nudged Shen Xin with her elbow and asked in a low voice, "Did something happen?"

She had just noticed it. It was quite a long scar, probably not a small injury at all.

"Don’t ask," Shen Xin said, refusing to elaborate.

’What could he say? That Ding Yuwei had been kidnapped, and the wound on her hand was from killing a drug dealer?’

’Zeng Wenxi would unleash a full-blown martial arts performance on him right then and there.’

Shen Shuang’s gaze flickered. She sighed softly and said in a low voice, "You two should be more careful from now on. Once you have kids, you have to think about them, right?"

Shen Xin was sipping his tea, and when he heard this, he almost spat it all out.

’We’re not even close to that stage yet!’

There were no outsiders, only family.

Zeng Wenxi was clearly more than satisfied with Ding Yuwei.

She was even more over-the-top than Shen Shuang, already trying to set a time with Ding Yuwei to go look at houses.

In the New District, no less. She said she had already taken the time to check it out and found a promising property with a good location, not far from the city bureau, which would be convenient for their commute.

Her enthusiasm made Shen Xin cough repeatedly, trying to signal her to tone it down a bit.

’I’m still young,’ he thought. ’There’s no need to rush the marriage talk this intensely.’

Still, Shen Xin thought buying a house wasn’t a bad idea.

After all, with his salary of a few thousand a month, it would take him forever and a day to afford a house. He could only rely on his parents for now.

After dinner, they saw off his grandparents and parents. Shen Xin and Ding Yuwei didn’t hurry back.

They went for a stroll in the nearby Bridge Park.

In the dark of night, with the lake breeze blowing, Shen Xin held Ding Yuwei’s hand and apologized to her.

His parents’ enthusiasm had been a bit excessive.

"It’s fine. It was nice. I actually really like a lively family like this," Ding Yuwei said with a smile, leaning in closer.

Her father had passed away early, and her mother suffered from severe depression and was currently living in a sanatorium.

Her grandmother lived with her uncle.

Most of the time, Ding Yuwei lived alone.

She once thought she had gotten used to it, but she still felt lonely during holidays and festivals.

The very things Shen Xin took for granted, and even found annoying, were exactly what she longed for most.

A pang of heartache hit Shen Xin. He pulled Ding Yuwei into his arms and said softly, "Let’s go see your mom tomorrow."

It was the right thing to do, both emotionally and logically.

Ding Yuwei nodded slightly.

After their food had settled, Shen Xin drove Ding Yuwei home.

Of course, once they got to her place, he didn’t want to leave.

"Think about it. I’d be so lonely going back by myself."

"Besides, I can drive you to work tomorrow. You’ll save gas."

Shen Xin made his excuses.

Ding Yuwei’s pretty face flushed. It’s not like she could really push Shen Xin out the door.

After a round of "exercise," the two ordered a late-night snack and ate together to replenish their energy.

Inevitably, the conversation turned to work again.

Now that they were back in Nanjiang, the work at the Cold Case Office had to continue.

At the same time, Shen Xin’s focus needed to shift back to training drug-sniffing dogs.

Zhao Hongjie was very supportive of this.

After all, Shen Xin was his subordinate. No matter how much Shen Xin achieved, it reflected well on him.

"I’ll get in touch with Li Dian and the others later. We shouldn’t just look around Nanjiang. We can contact people throughout Ningjiang, and even in other provinces, to find enough dogs as soon as possible."

Li Dian was the director of a rescue shelter they had met before.

"As for the training grounds, let’s use the K9 base. That place isn’t small, even bigger than the one in Spring City. Plus, I know the people at the base, so they can help out."

It was also at the foot of a mountain, which would be convenient for training birds later.

Ding Yuwei nodded. "That’s true. You’re quite familiar with the place."

Shen Xin froze. The way she said that felt a little off.

He stole a glance at Ding Yuwei and decisively changed the subject.

After eating, it was only eleven at night, still early.

The two of them lay together, each scrolling through their phones.

The short-video platform was getting more and more popular, with a huge number of users.

Shen Xin had grown to like it too. It was just like that saying online: the people on this short-video platform are all super talented, and they’re so well-spoken.

As he was scrolling, a live stream popped up.

It was Doniya.

He was about to scroll past it when Ding Yuwei, who was next to him, noticed. She leaned over and asked curiously, "Is this the live-streaming company Doniya works for now?"

Shen Xin nodded.

Doniya had already joined a Nanjiang company called Shenghao Entertainment Culture Company, which specialized in live streaming on these short-video platforms.

Ding Yuwei asked, "Doesn’t she sing? Why is she dancing now? And... isn’t what she’s wearing a little revealing?"

On screen, Doniya had wavy, permed hair. It looked like she had a beauty filter on.

Her features were naturally very striking, but her skin wasn’t great from being exposed to the wind and sun on the grasslands. Now, with the beauty filter on, she instantly transformed into a poised and stunning beauty.

And just as Ding Yuwei had said, her outfit was rather revealing and sexy.

At that moment, she was in a joint broadcast with another girl.

It looked like the two of them were in a PK battle.

This was a new feature the short-video platform had just launched in August of that year.

Right now, Doniya and the girl on the other screen were in a dance battle.

It’s just that the dancing...

Shen Xin frowned. It felt a little borderline.

Ding Yuwei thought so too and asked Shen Xin why Doniya had started doing this kind of thing.

"I don’t know. I haven’t contacted her in over half a month. She’s been busy and hasn’t really contacted me either," Shen Xin said, shaking his head.

He remembered that Doniya’s previous streams were mainly focused on singing.

’How did it turn into this?’

As they watched, Doniya was on the verge of winning the PK battle, but at the last second, her opponent overtook her.

The loser had to accept a punishment.

Doniya started bickering with her opponent.

After just a few words, the two girls actually started arguing in the live stream.

The stream chat went wild, with everyone egging them on.

But the next moment, the girl on the other screen suddenly disappeared from her camera, only to reappear in Doniya’s stream room.

Then the two of them started physically fighting on the spot.

"Holy shit, what’s going on?!" Shen Xin was dumbfounded.

’So they’re from the same company!’

Someone on site immediately ran forward to stop them, then shouted at the camera to stop broadcasting, to cut the feed.

But the live stream wasn’t turned off.

Meanwhile, the viewers in the stream went absolutely nuts, and comments flooded the screen.

Some were even sending gifts, yelling for no one to stop them and to let them SOLO.

Girls fighting is never a pretty sight, anyway.

Doniya and the other girl were grabbing each other’s hair, pulling and tugging, until they were finally separated with great difficulty.

Only then was the live stream finally cut off.

Shen Xin and Ding Yuwei stared at each other, at a loss for words.

Was that considered a live-streaming accident?
