American Football: King of the Bay Area

Chapter 356 353: A Strong Response

  • Next Chapter

After two incredibly close helmet catches, the teamwork between Lu Ke and Ginn led the team to the first passing touchdown of today's game. Afterwards, the special teams remained an incredibly stable unit for the San Francisco 49ers, and after David Akens cleanly kicked the extra point without any hesitation, the score on the field temporarily became 0-7.

"In their first offensive drive, the San Francisco 49ers' short-passing strategy was incredibly effective. They used a series of piecemeal plays to disrupt the opponent's defensive formation. Clearly, the Detroit Lions were half a step behind in tactical adjustments. In particular, Ted Ginn Jr.'s two spectacular helmet catches successfully allowed the 49ers to take the lead on the road.

Now, the opportunity is in the hands of the Lions Team.

As we said before, this is a showdown between two offenses. The offensive performance of both teams will decide the momentum and result of this game. Just now, Lu Ke demonstrated his considerable skill, and now it's Matthew Stafford's turn. The 49ers' Defense Team also needs to be on high alert. The Lions Team are not the Pirate Team; their offense is definitely not to be underestimated."

An exciting game can't possibly rely on the brilliant performance of just one side. Now it was the Lions Team's turn to make their move.

Just as Teddy and Kirk had analyzed, all eyes were on the Lions Team's quarterback, Stafford. Especially after Lu Ke's outstanding performance just now, Stafford's own performance was highly anticipated.

Sure enough, when the Lions Team took the field, they did not disappoint.

On their first down, Stafford first found his number 87 Tight End, Brandon Pettigrew. The player, selected for the 2009 All-Rookie team, successfully made a seventeen-yard reception and pushed forward another five yards before being stopped.

A twenty-three-yard gain on the very first down. The Detroit Lions had given the San Francisco 49ers' Defense Team a taste of what was to come, announcing their formidable presence with a stunning long pass. The entire Ford Field finally roared to life, with all the home fans screaming and cheering wildly. Facing the visiting San Francisco 49ers, they could now finally vent all their pent-up energy.

The showdown had officially begun!

...

"Whoa, this is truly a pleasant surprise. The Detroit Lions' offense is in fine form, and the San Francisco 49ers' Defense Team has also delivered a brilliant performance since the start of the game today. Sparks are flying in this back-and-forth exchange, but it's still an offensive battle. The offense led by Stafford still controls the momentum on the field."

"Another third-down conversion! Stafford has now completed two consecutive third-down conversions from desperate situations, successfully getting the first down. Under pressure, he has led the Lions Team to the 49ers' thirty-five-yard line. Showing his toughness in the clutch, Stafford is clearly prepared for a hard-fought battle and isn't backing down!"

Time in the first quarter was ticking away, and the confrontation on the field had reached a fever pitch. The San Francisco 49ers, who had been hitting their stride over the past two weeks, showed sufficient intensity, forcing their opponent into a tough third-down situation on two out of three drives. But the offense led by Stafford was in top form, and their explosive power at critical moments successfully kept their offensive momentum alive.

For both teams, the game had already entered a brutal, close-quarters phase. In this early battle for momentum, neither side was willing to yield.

Looking at how things had unfolded so far, the San Francisco 49ers seemed to have a slight upper hand overall, as their Defense Team had successfully applied more pressure. The Lions Team's offense was like a group trying to advance through a raging storm. However, pressure was just pressure. Whether the 49ers' Defense Team would succeed in forcing a three-and-out, or the Lions Team would carve a bloody path to a score, would determine the entirely different direction the game would take next.

"Sack! Patrick Willis and Navorro Bowman of the San Francisco 49ers combine for the sack! Matthew Stafford's protection pocket is now facing a severe test. The first sack of the game comes from the 49ers' Defense Team! Just as the Lions Team's momentum was building, the 49ers' tough counterstrike gives their opponents no room to breathe."

The screen was replaying the sack. Facing a second-and-eight, Stafford was looking for a receiver when the Offense Line broke down on both sides. He had absolutely no chance and was met with a vicious sack. After a loss of seven yards, they now had to face a difficult third-and-fifteen.

"The San Francisco 49ers' desire to win is exceptionally strong today. Both the offense and Defense Team are showing sufficient intensity. On that last sack, the Detroit Lions had no chance at all; they were completely outmatched. This isn't normal. This really isn't normal at all." Teddy couldn't help but exclaim. "Their relatively weak Defense Team is slowly starting to rise. This is undoubtedly a good thing for the 49ers, but for their opponents, it couldn't be worse."

During their first drive, after entering the edge of the red zone, Lu Ke also faced the test of some tough matchups. The result was Ted Ginn Jr. boldly stepping up, making two spectacular catches, and ultimately scoring a touchdown. Now, Stafford was facing the same situation, the same problem, only even more severe.

"Third-and-fifteen. Stafford calls for the snap. In a quick drop-back, he tries to find a target, but… there are no open receivers! The San Francisco 49ers' Defense Team seems to have anticipated a passing play, completely abandoning the blitz and run defense. With a mix of man and zone coverage, they've completely shut down all of the Lions Team's passing lanes!

Calvin Johnson! My God, while being triple-teamed by three defenders, Calvin Johnson powerfully comes down with the football, rewarding Stafford's trust and completing the catch! And the play isn't over! Johnson breaks the tackle of the 49ers' number 30, Reggie Smith, then shoves aside the supporting number 31, Donte Winter! He keeps pushing forward, Johnson is still advancing!

A third! A fourth! Johnson breaks four straight tackles, charging unstoppably into the heart of the San Francisco 49ers' territory! Then, with multiple defenders closing in... Oh, my God! The End Zone! Johnson is in the End Zone! Touchdown! That's a touchdown!

The Lions Team's number eighty-one Wide Receiver, Calvin Johnson, after outmuscling three defenders to make the catch, broke four tackles and carved a bloody path through the dense defense! He not only got the first down but went all the way for the touchdown! Touchdown! A spectacular touchdown! The Lions Team answer a touchdown with a touchdown of their own!

That was just incredible! Jesus Christ, I'm going crazy for this sport."

In the Fox Television studio, Kirk and Teddy had completely lost themselves, crying out in astonishment one after another. They could hardly believe their eyes, watching dumbstruck as Johnson completed his devastatingly powerful advance. Against the 49ers' tight defense, he had torn open a seam relying completely on his individual ability and scored a touchdown.

It was less that Stafford made a beautiful pass and more that Johnson scored the touchdown all on his own, reminding people of Marshawn Lynch activating his "Beast Mode."

Calvin Johnson, the second overall pick in the 2007 draft, played Wide Receiver and stunned everyone in training camp. He stood at 6-foot-5 (196 cm) and weighed 239 pounds (108 kg)—an absolutely massive frame for a Wide Receiver. Yet, this behemoth of a man ran the forty-yard dash in 4.35 seconds.

To put that into perspective, Chris Johnson, who broke the forty-yard dash record in 2008, had a time of 4.24 seconds. Calvin Johnson was only 0.11 seconds slower, but he weighed nearly twenty kilograms more. In addition to that, his other combine stats were just as astonishing. His hand-eye coordination reached unprecedented levels, and he was hailed as a historical figure who would change the Wide Receiver position.

After entering the Alliance, he put on a dominant performance in his rookie season. During a game in week five of the regular season against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, his Lions teammate, fellow Wide Receiver Roy Williams, gave him the nickname "Megatron," describing him as being as fierce and domineering as Megatron, the leader of the villainous Decepticons from Transformers.

After that, the nickname became widely popular among fans and has stuck with him to this day.

In today's game, "Megatron" Calvin Johnson once again displayed the superb individual ability of a phenomenal Wide Receiver, showcasing an unstoppable force. It wasn't that the San Francisco 49ers' defense had a problem; it was that Johnson was simply impossible to stop. Just like Marshawn Lynch in his prime, he was an unsolvable puzzle.

And so, facing the predicament of a third-and-fifteen, Johnson unstoppably powered his way into the End Zone for a touchdown!

The entire Ford Field erupted. The San Francisco 49ers had announced their powerful presence with a spectacular touchdown, and the Detroit Lions had answered with an even more brilliant one, reasserting that this was their home turf. The sheer force of this back-and-forth battle, the electric atmosphere, was almost suffocating. It felt as if everyone's hearts were about to burst.

Noise. There was nothing but noise. The home fans seemed to have gone mad, leveraging their superior numbers to the absolute maximum. The visiting fans were completely drowned out. A sense of tension and pressure began to permeate the air.

Sitting on the sidelines, Lu Ke calmly began to stretch his limbs. He watched as the special teams units took the field for the extra point, his entire being radiating an eager excitement.

'A satisfying, blowout victory is certainly enjoyable. But compared to a one-sided match, a down-to-the-wire win in a heated showdown is always more intense, more thrilling, and more captivating. The best opponents bring out your best performance, allowing you to break through your limits and reach an even higher level.'

'Higher, stronger, farther. That's the madness at the very core of competitive sports.' Now, Lu Ke could feel his blood truly start to boil with excitement!
