American Football: King of the Bay Area
Chapter 353 350: Short Pass Game Plan
"The game is about to begin. Today's matchup will start with the visiting San Francisco 49ers on offense. Now, let's introduce the starting lineups for the 49ers' offense and the Detroit Lions' defense.
Neither team's starting lineup has changed much compared to the previous five weeks, with both sides sticking to their established starters.
The San Francisco 49ers' offense has been one of the most efficient in the league so far, averaging 32.2 points per game. That puts them second in the National League, just behind the Green Bay Packers. Their roster is filled with young, relatively unknown players. The most widely recognized name is undoubtedly Vernon Davis, but the team's starting Tight End is now rookie Logan Newman, who has already caught six Touchdowns in the past five games.
Similarly, the Detroit Lions' defense is also a squad lacking star players. Their most famous player is the three-time Pro Bowl Defensive End, Kyle Vanden Bosch, but his performance has declined significantly over the last year and this season. The team is giving up an average of 17.8 points per game. Other than allowing just three points against the Kansas City Chiefs in the second week of the regular season, their defense's performance in the other four games has been far from satisfactory.
Without a doubt, this is shaping up to be an offensive shootout. The performance of the offenses will determine the course of this game. For neutral fans, this is bound to be a contest where sparks will fly."
From the bustling, crowded commentary booths, all sorts of opinions traveled across the airwaves, scattering to every corner of North America. Each commentator analyzed the grand spectacle of the game from their unique perspective. The live broadcast on Fox Television and the online stream on ESPN were simultaneously showing the electric atmosphere at Ford Field, and viewers sitting in front of their screens couldn't help but feel their own excitement surge.
Meanwhile, out on the field, Lu Ke was down on one knee, looking up at the teammates gathered around him. After laying out the play, he called out, "Any questions?"
The noise and clamor of playing on the road were still hard to get used to. The din constantly assaulted his eardrums, a relentless battle of cheers between the home and away fans. The buzzing static was like a persistent fly, endlessly annoying.
But at least it was no longer unfamiliar. Lu Ke focused his attention, relaying the coach's tactical instructions.
His teammates on the offense exchanged glances, their eyes peering through their helmets. "You sure?" Michael Crabtree's voice was laced with uncertainty, seemingly surprised by the coaching staff's choice of play.
Lu Ke let out a soft laugh, though the sound was instantly swallowed by the stadium's roar. "You should choose to trust me."
"I guess I don't have much of a choice." Crabtree was the first to extend his right hand, placing it on Lu Ke's helmet. Then he shouted, "What do you say, guys? Anyone with me?"
One after another, in the blink of an eye, the hands of all ten players were piled on top of Lu Ke's head. Logan Newman even bent down, weaving through the layered arms as if peering under an eave, and looked at Lu Ke. "Hey, Bambi, aren't you going to join in?"
Lu Ke rolled his eyes, then raised his own right hand and slapped it on top of his head. Instantly, everyone burst into laughter, and the complicated emotions of playing on the road quietly dissipated. "Shout 'Touchdown' on one!"
"One!"
"Touchdown!"
All the hands shot up in unison. Lu Ke stood up and exaggeratedly rolled his neck as if repairing the 'pressure damage' from just now. Marcus Lynch, standing beside him, saw this and started snickering.
Lu Ke didn't respond further. He just waved a hand. "Line up." Lynch quickly wiped the smile off his face, hurried to Lu Ke's side, and got into the Pistol Formation.
The clash of titans had officially begun!
"On the first play of the day, Lu Ke connects with Crabtree for a six-yard gain..."
"A screen pass, Lu Ke connects with Newman. After the five-yard pass, Newman keeps pushing and successfully gets the first down..."
"From the Pistol Formation, Lu Ke with a quick pass. Ted Ginn Jr. catches a three-yard short pass and then keeps moving, stopping in a crowd for a gain of seven yards..."
"Lynch with a surprise run, gaining four yards and getting another first down..."
"It's Marcus Lynch again, this time on a short reception. He catches a pass in the flat for about two yards, pushes forward, shakes off a tackle from the cornerback, and successfully gains eight yards..."
"Short pass, Lu Ke finds Crabtree again. It was a six-yard pass, but relying on the big Wide Receiver's size advantage, he turns it into a twelve-yard gain for another first down..."
"And there's the first incompletion of the game for Lu Ke. The Detroit Lions' safety and cornerback combined on the coverage, batting down a twelve-yard pass intended for Newman at the last moment..."
"But... right after that, Lu Ke connects again! It's Newman, Logan Newman again, who tore open a gap on a crossing route, makes the seven-yard catch, and keeps pushing forward. The San Francisco 49ers are now at the thirty-four-yard line..."
The highly anticipated game had truly begun, and the commentators had no room to breathe. Their words flowed in an unceasing torrent as the game charged forward at a breakneck pace. It seemed as though in the space of a single breath, four minutes of game time had already slipped by.
"Unexpected. This is truly unexpected. The San Francisco 49ers' young rookie quarterback, Lu Ke, has once again demonstrated his control over the offense and his ability to dictate the pace of the game. Right from the start, he's used a dazzling series of short passes to constantly increase the offensive speed. It's like Niagara Falls, a constant roar, giving the opposing defense absolutely no room to breathe. In one fell swoop, they've pushed past midfield and are now at the thirty-four-yard line. Kirk, this is truly remarkable, what are your thoughts?"
While the San Francisco 49ers' offense was setting up their play, the Fox Television studio finally got a small window to briefly summarize the game's progress. Teddy turned to his partner, asking for Kirk's opinion.
"Indeed. Lu Ke, who's known for his long passes, has shown incredible control with his short game today. He's running a Tom Brady-esque New England Patriots-style offense. The dazzling array of short pass options, the clean and quick release time... the entire offense is operating with lightning speed, showcasing a tactical system that's slightly different from what we've seen in the previous five weeks. It's certainly quite surprising.
"Let's look at the numbers. Through nine offensive plays so far, Lu Ke's average release time has been just 2.08 seconds. That's fast. That's just incredibly fast. The Detroit Lions' defense hasn't even had time to organize an effective defensive strategy before finding themselves on the back foot. Just as expected, the San Francisco 49ers' offense is in top form!"
Four minutes and thirteen seconds. Nine offensive plays. Six first downs. The San Francisco 49ers had sliced through to the heart of their opponent's territory like a hot knife through butter. The unexpected short-passing tactic had pushed the speed and rhythm to the absolute limit, and the Detroit Lions were struggling to keep up. The 49ers' aggressive momentum was steadily building.
The Detroit Lions' defense finally seemed to snap out of it. Their defensive coordinator, a rolled-up playbook in hand, paced along the sideline parallel to his retreating players and then started cursing up a storm. All sorts of profanities pierced through the stadium's cacophony, echoing intermittently across the field and gradually jolting the defensive players awake.
On the next offensive play, the intensity of the defensive pass rush instantly shot up a few notches.
After the snap, Lu Ke immediately felt intense pressure. The offensive line's pocket hadn't broken, but the force of the defensive line's charge was like the Qiantang River's tidal bore, crashing forward with thunderous momentum. The entire pocket was rapidly collapsing, and immense pressure bore down on him. Despite the crisis, Lu Ke remained calm, steadily adjusting with his backpedal while his eyes quickly scanned for a receiver.
Crabtree was facing tight man coverage from a player, but his position was drifting closer to the sideline, not an ideal spot for a catch. Newman was double-teamed and was crossing routes with Kyle Williams, leaving both with very little room to make a catch. And where was Lynch? For a moment, he couldn't even find Lynch in his field of vision.
Not only had the defensive line's pass rush intensified, but the coverage in the short-pass zones had also ramped up significantly. They had practically used a flood of defenders to completely smother all of Lu Ke's passing lanes, forcing a breakthrough to rely on a player's individual ability in a one-on-one matchup.
There was no time to hesitate or think. Out of the corner of his eye, Lu Ke's gaze pierced through the wall of bodies and caught sight of Ted Ginn Jr. in the intermediate passing zone. A safety was right on him, constantly interfering with Ginn's route. The two were tangled up, but this was Lu Ke's best window. He had to trust Ginn's speed, banking on his explosive burst and acceleration to beat the defender.
And so, he quickly raised his right arm. As the pocket completely collapsed, the power in Lu Ke's forearm exploded and then focused in an instant. The precise control from his fingertips reached its peak. His eyes were locked on the route Ginn was about to break into, and then the football traced a small arc as it was quickly released.
Ginn was jostling and grappling with the safety in tight coverage, both men fighting for superior positioning. In his peripheral vision, he caught the motion of Lu Ke raising his arm to throw, and his instincts blared like an alarm. Ginn's game sense then exploded. He leaned into the defender, dropped his center of gravity, then executed a sudden stop-and-turn. His feet pivoted sharply, and he burst into a sprint on an upward diagonal route.
His explosive power peaked in an instant—you could almost hear his bones creaking. He accelerated, then accelerated again. But at the same time, the safety relentlessly gave chase. Both men pushed their bodies to the absolute limit, and Ginn had only managed to gain half a step on him by virtue of his initial break.
Just then, the football arrived overhead.
