American Football: King of the Bay Area

Chapter 332 330: Take Another City

Bodies, bodies, and more bodies.

Lining up for the play at the two-yard line, his vision was a jam-packed sea of bodies. It felt like being lost in a crowd, so tight he could barely move. But for a player like Vernon, this vast ocean was where he could fully leverage his size and strength. Like a lighthouse, all he had to do was plant himself in the End Zone to instantly draw the attention of every player on the field.

After the snap, Vernon didn't hesitate for a moment. He immediately began running toward the right at a forty-five-degree angle. The entire San Francisco 49ers offensive line shifted right with him, a moving wall rumbling forward. With overwhelming force, they crashed into the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' defense.

Amidst the tight coverage, Vernon was a shark cutting through a school of sardines. SWOOSH. He dodged left and right, carving a path through the mass of players and plowing through any obstacles in his way. Out of the corner of his eye, he could see Williams, Gene, and Crabtree all pushing to the right, creating a numbers advantage as they spread out across the right side of the End Zone.

Suddenly, Vernon stopped on a dime and cut back inside, moving against the flow of traffic into the middle of the field. Without breaking stride, his momentum carried him toward the back of the End Zone. He turned, raised a hand, and saw the football rocketing toward him like a cannonball.

It was a little high. A little far.

His pupils contracted. 'Our chemistry still isn't perfect. The trajectory and velocity of the pass weren't a perfect match.' But Vernon didn't care. 'I'm making this catch! I won't be denied!'

He planted his feet and exploded upward, soaring over the heads of the defenders around him. He stretched out his arms and, through a sea of flailing hands, viciously snatched the football out of the air. Before he started to fall, he pulled the ball in, clutching it tightly to his chest.

The pull of gravity made every cell in his body scream. Then came a powerful impact from behind, like being hit by a freight train. His insides churned. The violent force made every bone in his body creak, as if he were being flattened by a steamroller.

A burst of pain erupted, but Vernon's mind went blank. There was no time to think, no time to hesitate. Acting on pure instinct, he gritted his teeth as he landed hard, both feet planting firmly on the grass. His muscles strained, all ten fingers clamped down on the football. He straightened his back, fighting to keep his balance—

'Steady now, stay steady. Hold on, just a little longer.'

He had to make sure his feet were in-bounds. He had to control his footing and his muscles. Even if only for a fraction of a second, he had to use every ounce of his strength to maintain control of the ball.

For an instant, time seemed to freeze. The explosive energy, the force of the collision—it all paused. Even the pain vanished as his reflexes and muscle control reached their absolute peak. Then, the world snapped into fast-forward, and he was sent flying with a muffled THUD.

Vernon had only one thought in his mind: 'How is the speed of sound so slow? The pain is killing me, but I'm only hearing the impact now? What's going on?'

Then, like a discarded garbage bag, Vernon was sent flying. He skidded across the ground for a short distance before slamming into the padded wall at the back of the field, where he finally came to a stop in a crumpled heap. Every muscle in his body screamed in protest and his vision swam, but Vernon's first thought was, 'Did I complete the catch?'

...

"Incredible! Absolutely incredible! Number 85 for the San Francisco 49ers, Tight End Vernon Davis, just made an unbelievable catch! He was losing his balance, practically defying gravity, but he still made the catch, secured the ball, and tried for the touchdown! Vernon has done it again, another miraculous catch just like the one on the sideline!"

Even after seeing it with their own eyes, they could hardly believe it. Kirk and Teddy traded glances, wide smiles spreading across their faces. It wasn't about winning or losing; it was about the sheer brilliance of the pass and catch. This was competitive sports at its absolute best!

"Wow. That's the second time on this drive that Vernon has made a spectacular, high-risk catch. We can't tell with the naked eye if it was a legal catch; the referees will have to confirm it via instant replay. But there's no question about it: that was a beautiful pass from Lu Ke, and an even more beautiful catch from Vernon! A performance like this takes us right back to his 2009 Pro Bowl highlight reel."

Objectively speaking, both of Lu Ke's passes on this drive were a bit off. Part of it was a lack of chemistry, but it was mostly that Lu Ke's touch wasn't quite refined enough. And yet, Vernon came down with the ball both times, relying entirely on his own incredible ability. A Tight End like him is a crucial offensive weapon for any team.

As Teddy finished his thought, the broadcast booth immediately cut to the instant replay. Both commentators fixed their eyes on the screen to see if the catch was good.

"Okay, first, he has control of the ball with both hands. No question there. No bobble, he secures it perfectly. Next, the feet. The feet are the question... Let's see. This angle isn't great, it's a little ambiguous. It looks like he might be right on the back line, it's hard to tell. We need to see another angle. Director, do we have another camera angle available?"

There are cameras covering every angle on a football field, and the NFL officials have access to all of them. The broadcast feed, however, has a more limited selection, and it takes time to call up different shots.

So, Teddy and Kirk could only watch the same replay over and over. The angle was just too blurry to make a definitive call. The suspense would have to wait for the referee's decision.

"It's tough to call. Really tough. The referee is going to need to look at this one a few times." Kirk smoothly transitioned to a new topic. "These two clutch, high-risk catches from Vernon... they remind me of the Pittsburgh Steelers' rookie Wide Receiver from last year, Antonio Brown. Don't you think?"

"Who would have thought last year that a sixth-round, 195th-overall-pick Wide Receiver would have such an outstanding rookie season? He showed the absolute dominance of a premier receiver. In those last two catches, Vernon's hands and body control really do bring Brown to mind. He doesn't play like a Tight End at all; he's more like an oversized Wide Receiver," Kirk continued, sharing his opinion.

Teddy neither agreed nor disagreed, simply smiling as he said, "Does this just go to show, yet again, how often all thirty-two teams get it wrong in the draft?"

As they spoke, the referee finally finished the review and made his decision.

The wait felt endless. In the stands, Jeff, Chris, and the others were all on their feet. After the explosive pass and catch, followed by the nail-biting suspense of a potential touchdown, the massive adrenaline rush now gave way to agonizing torment. It felt like their hearts were about to burst. All eyes were fixed on the head referee as he walked onto the field.

In the NFL, the referee announces all rulings over a personal microphone to ensure transparency for the entire stadium. Now, under the gaze of thousands, the head referee switched on his mic to announce the call—

"After further review, the receiver, number eighty-five, completed the process of the catch with both feet in-bounds. Therefore, it is a touchdown, San Francisco 49ers!" With that, the referee raised both arms, signaling the touchdown and confirming the result.

"AHHHH! Touchdown!" Jeff leaped into the air, then jumped onto Danny, pumping his right fist and roaring at the top of his lungs, "Touchdown! Touchdown! Touchdown!"

Candlestick Park erupted once more. The fans had been chanting for another touchdown, and though it took some doing, the San Francisco 49ers offense had actually delivered. The first half wasn't even over, and they had already built a three-touchdown lead. This game was simply a dream, too good to be true.

All the fans in the stadium lost themselves in the moment, chanting in unison, "Touchdown! Touchdown! Touchdown!" In that instant, Candlestick Park fell into a state of collective ecstasy, unleashing an unstoppable roar.

The half wasn't even over, and the team had already racked up three touchdowns. Even the offensive players on the field were overcome with elation.

Vernon broke into a sprint, recklessly ripping off his helmet and tossing it behind him. He charged right up to Lu Ke and roared, "We are!"

"Warriors!" Lu Ke roared back without a moment's hesitation, his stance just as intense. They both leaped into the air for a celebratory chest bump, and Vernon broke into ecstatic laughter. "Awesome! Awesome! That was just awesome!"

"Hey, hey, you bum, where's your helmet? Don't you want it anymore?" Crabtree's teasing voice came from behind. Vernon turned around, a blank look on his face, and only then did he realize he had actually thrown his helmet into the stands. He quickly ducked his head, jogging over to retrieve it amidst a roar of good-natured laughter.

For the San Francisco 49ers, it was a truly spectacular game. Just past the midway point of the second quarter, they had already scored three touchdowns while their opponent had yet to put any points on the board. For the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, however, it was an unmitigated disaster.

And the disaster was far from over.
