All My Summons Become Divine Girls
Chapter 550: Refusing The Claim
Didi felt the recognition settle against her frost, the pressure finding the blood beneath her wrist without needing her to supply a name.
Hajin’s hand remained beneath her forearm, the heel of his palm pressing firmly below her elbow as the weight in her shoulder increased.
She could feel the effort in him through the contact, the burned palm at her wrist carrying a tremor he had stopped trying to hide.
The five effects around them were still being held, each person taking the part that had reached their own place in the passage.
She did not need to look away from the line to know the work continued, hearing Loccy’s planted weight through the floor beneath her feet.
’He recognizes the blood, so he thinks the answer came with it.’
The attention tightened before the actual command arrived, finding her pulse so precisely that she felt its pressure every time her heart moved.
Then the claim reached into her current, carrying the demand to return along the royal line without any spoken invitation for her to consider.
Didi felt the difference immediately, the pressure no longer searching for a connection because it had found one it expected to obey.
Her five Shards sustained the frost already holding that connection, the familiar capacity remaining painfully finite beneath the thing attempting to use her inheritance against her.
Her fingertips grew colder against the line, the sensation creeping beneath her nails while a deep pull caught inside the current she was holding.
’No.’
The demand made her want to spit, the sudden anger startling in its simplicity after all the careful movements she had needed to keep this contact open.
She could still picture the child’s blackened fingertips, the way she had pressed harder after the charcoal snapped beneath her little hand.
Cessy was breathing through clenched teeth nearby, each painful breath audible beneath the softer sound of Vella working at the division in her core.
Hajin’s burned palm trembled against her wrist, its careful grip reminding her of the question he had asked while she was still considering the scar.
’He asked.’
The cold beneath her nails deepened until she felt it in her knuckles, each joint aching as she kept her wrist aligned against the pull.
She pressed the frost into the point where the demand expected recognition to become obedience, holding the connection without letting it define her answer.
"None of us belongs to you."
The words came out level despite the ache beneath her shoulder, their quietness almost surprising her when she felt how hard she wanted to shout.
She turned her fingers another fraction, feeling the edge of the frost scrape along the imposed direction until the pull concentrated into one intolerable point.
For a moment she could hear nothing beyond the blood in her ears, Hajin’s support beneath her elbow becoming the only steady part of her stance.
Hajin shifted beneath her forearm when the pressure rose, his shoulder moving with the turn as she felt the frost begin to bite into the demand.
His right fingers settled more securely under her elbow, the pressure keeping her shoulder from collapsing forward while she brought the frost through its final turn.
The transmitted recall tried to carry her current backward, meeting a refusal that stayed attached to the blood it had expected to use.
Didi kept turning at that point, the effort pulling her breath short as her five Shards sustained the frost against the transmitted command.
The recall slipped at last, its pull skidding across the frost with a jolt that ran from her fingers into the shoulder Hajin was holding up.
Only then did the next Shard begin forming, its first clear edge appearing beside the five that had held through the refusal.
[ Breakthrough: Refuse the First Claim ]
[ Shard progression: Sixth Shard formed ]
[ Unassigned stat points gained: 3 ]
Didi saw the new shape above her, its clear edge catching beside the five familiar Shards before Hajin moved the notice into the Stream’s view.
"Sixth Shard formed," Aria read aloud, "breakthrough, Refuse the First Claim, three stat points awaiting assignment."
The blood-pink thread beneath Didi’s frost widened as she caught the last jerk of the rejected pull, forcing another tight breath through her nose.
’Keep holding before you start admiring it.’
She blinked the assignment field aside, her wrist beginning to shake while she pressed the frost back into shape against the scar’s remaining line.
Hajin looked from the sixth Shard to her face, the first trace of relief pulling at his mouth despite the effort still held in both arms.
"You picked the worst possible time to improve."
"I was busy."
The answer surprised a laugh out of him, its brief warmth reaching her through the contact before she had time to decide whether she wanted to smile too.
At the passage mouth, Ash lifted his face from beneath the Watcher’s arm, his small voice reaching Didi through the sound of her own breathing.
"None of us."
A single strike from Tessa’s oven bell carried toward the square, joining the boy’s voice without making the people holding their positions stop to answer it.
Didi kept the sound in her attention, finding something ordinary in it while the sixth Shard settled into the space beside its companions.
She had heard that bell around food and ordinary work, its single note bringing a sudden, unreasonable wish to be standing anywhere near Tessa’s oven.
Messages raced across the display beside the breakthrough notice, their movement becoming a blur whenever Didi tried to follow more than a few words.
[ irontea: she said none of us, then the sixth showed up ]
[ morning_static: keep holding, celebrate when they get home ]
Didi let the messages pass, having no spare hand for the people cheering when the person supporting her wrist still needed her to keep its frost steady.
The pressure shifted while she was looking at the contact, withdrawing its demand on her blood without withdrawing its attention from the people standing here.
A colder reach passed along the line toward Hajin, the change leaving her clear about its direction before she understood what it had found in him.
He noticed it too, the brief amusement disappearing while his gaze moved from her hand toward the part of the line reaching past them.
Aria moved the shared notice aside, retaining the breakthrough record while presenting the routine field-supply confirmation already waiting beneath their immediate work.
"To inventory," Hajin said, keeping his hands where they were needed.
Hajin turned the receipt into their shared view, its neat rows briefly replacing the thing watching them through the scar beneath her hand.
[ Wallet before: 43,935 credits ]
[ Purchase: 1,000 credits ]
[ Wallet after: 42,935 credits ]
[ Field supplies: 20 staple-food packs at 25 credits each ]
[ Medical supplies: 10 dressings at 20 credits each ]
[ Relief supplies: 10 wash/comfort kits at 30 credits each ]
The supplies entered inventory with one soft chime, leaving the final balance beside the frost while Hajin kept both hands supporting her arm.
Her eyes caught on the dressings, the simple word drawing her attention toward the damaged skin pressed so carefully against the side of her wrist.
’Ten, we might get through ten before this evening is finished.’
Ferra glanced toward the receipt from her marked positions, giving a brief nod before returning to the fixtures holding their side of the observation seam.
She could see the edge of Hajin’s burn beneath her thumb, the skin looking rawer whenever the shifting light caught the crease of his palm.
He was still standing in the awkward position he had found for her, his back foot braced while the strain slowly dragged at his shoulder.
She wanted the line gone so she could turn his hand over, wash that palm, sit close enough to hold it without something trying to pull them apart.
The sudden cold passing toward him brought that small imagined evening to a stop, settling beneath her ribs with a sharpness her own frost had never possessed.
’Look at me when I refuse you, instead of choosing somebody else to make the same demand of.’
She clenched her teeth at the shift, her fingers pressing hard enough against the frost to send a fresh ache through the joint of her thumb.
Hajin’s expression had gone still, his gaze following the colder line where it moved toward the part of him the harvest order had valued above his living body.
Juna drew closer from Cessy’s position as Vella secured the threatened division, the household closing around the new direction before anybody needed to call them into place.
"Still busy?" Hajin asked, the attempt at a smile fading before she could return it.
"Getting busier."
Didi kept her frost between the attention and the room behind them, the narrow patch feeling suddenly very small beneath her hand.
"What is it looking at?" she asked.
"The Fragment," Aria answered flatly.
Hajin’s breath caught against the word, his right hand faltering beneath her elbow before he settled it back into place with a visible effort.
She shifted her fingers against his palm, returning a little of the support he had given while the cold attention settled on its chosen target.
