All My Summons Become Divine Girls
Chapter 535: The Split Custodian Wakes
The fourth heartbeat under the three-heart chamber stopped being a rumor at dawn, because it climbed out of the floor.
The vault door had not opened, because there was no vault door anymore.
Only a seam in the chamber’s lowest stone had widened overnight into a mouth.
The thing that came up through it arrived in three pieces at once, north, river, plus sky.
Each piece stood twenty paces tall in its own chamber, anchored beneath its own district.
Each piece was also the same piece, because the enemy had read one distributed man plus answered with a distribution of its own.
The war table received Aria’s classification in the silence of people watching weather arrive.
[ Hostile Classification: Split Custodian ]
[ Defense Body Of The Three-Heart Engine, Pre-Foundational ]
[ Sections: 3, Shard-Class 20 Each ]
[ Shared Core: Mobile Between Sections ]
"The old records called it the engine’s defense body," the Watcher said, pale plus steady, with the archive skin open across the table. "It slept under the hearts because its job was to be the last wall if the engine was ever truly threatened."
"We have spent two weeks stabilizing three failing hearts," Ilyra said slowly, working it through. "To the defense body, that reads as an engine under sustained attack."
"Two weeks of loving repair," Sava said, "registered as assault."
The room sat with that for a moment, because there was no villain in it, only a guard dog that had misread the veterinarians.
"There is a difference," the Watcher added, tapping the record, "between this thing plus everything you have fought. The First Speaker’s god wanted agreement, plus this one only wants the engine alive. It will process anything that touches the hearts as a threat, without malice, forever."
[ CringeSlayer91: ] the final boss is an immune system. the whole war was an allergy
[ NewViewer_02: ] we spent 25 Chapters saving the engine and the engine’s bodyguard woke up mad about it
[ LurkerNoMore: ] shells grant nothing, core flees competence, pin required at three points simultaneously. this is a technique check, not a power check, and it is beautiful design
The first engagement was a disaster of the educational kind, plus education had always been the family’s whole style.
The war table would later frame the eleven-second anchor failure as the cheapest tuition anyone had ever paid a god-class opponent.
A river-company strike team tested the river section with standard siege anchors at midmorning, by the wardens’ book, plus the section dismantled the anchors in eleven seconds without turning around.
The section was not standing where the anchors had been placed. It had been standing there when the orders were cut, plus it was standing under the canal bank when the anchors landed, plus nobody had seen it move.
"It did not travel," Aria reported, replaying every reading she held.
"The section’s presence transferred instead. The body is one structure wearing three locations, plus the structure is a shell around a moving core."
"The shared core," Ferra said, already sketching, "relocates inside the shell whenever any section comes under threat."
The proof of the moving core arrived brutally at midday. The company’s second strike caught the north section with a real opening, drove a spar through its knee joint, plus the section collapsed like a puppet with cut strings.
No kill registered anywhere, plus no essence moved at all.
The collapsed section lay in the street, inert as demolished masonry, while the other two sections stood entirely unchanged.
Somewhere inside the shared shell, the hostile core had simply stopped being in the north piece before the spar ever landed.
[ Section Disabled: North Shell ]
[ Hostile Core Present: No ]
[ Destroyed Shell Value: None ]
The shell was disabled, not destroyed. By nightfall, its outer architecture had reformed around the north chamber, leaving the hostile core free to use the section again.
"You can break the shells all day," Loccy said, watching the replay with her arms folded. "It is a whack-a-mole with a god inside, plus the god is the only part that bleeds."
"So we do not fight the sections," Hajin said. "We pin the core."
The war table spent the whole afternoon learning the pinning problem, plus the pinning problem turned out to be the entire last month of technique development wearing a crown.
Every single failure had been a lesson purchased in advance. The steering collapse taught trust, the clone’s death taught rules, plus the girls’ solo stand taught the family to hold without him.
The exam had been assembling itself out of their mistakes all along, which is what exams fundamentally are.
The core moved between sections through a channel network inside the shell, faster than any body could pursue. It fled competence, in the literal sense, relocating away from any point of pressure toward whichever section was quietest.
"To pin it, pressure must arrive at every section at once," Aria laid out for the table.
"The channels must be watched plus the exits fixed, so the core’s only remaining move is to stand plus be found."
"Every section at once," Oren repeated. "There are three sections plus one of you."
The table looked at the man who had spent a month becoming three places.
"One of me," Hajin agreed, "plus everyone this family has, because the shells are twenty-Shard-class plus a clone carries two Rings."
"The technique earns its keep today or it never does," Juna said, flipping the ledger open to a fresh page.
"Mission, retreat, dissolution, the whole doctrine on one page. I need the count built before anyone here sleeps tonight."
The planning ran through the night, plus the plan that emerged was not a man multiplied. It was a family arranged around a man multiplied, every specialist holding one face of a three-faced problem.
Ferra mapped the channel network from shell resonance readings, plus found the linked line the core preferred.
The twins took the exits, because fixing doors is their native art.
Loccy took the burden, all three shells as one connected load, which was the layered-formation problem of her entire career.
Juna took the sky line, the shared rhythm the three sections moved on, because cutting rhythms is what a solar vanguard is for.
Didi came off her five-Shard rest to freeze the sky section’s heart-transfer, plus Eirwen rooted the riverbank approach in advance.
Vella stood ready at the seam between battle plus bill, which had become a formal medical posting with its own chair.
The Watcher would hold Ash plus the archive at the center, because the record of the defense body’s original protocols was the only instruction manual in the world.
She had spent the evening translating the maintenance hand’s final entry, the one about counting.
Her translation carried four footnotes plus one underline, which, for a woman of her famous restraint, constituted outright screaming.
"One core, three shells, nine specialists, one clone," Hajin said at the final count, giving the terms to the whole table plus the whole city on the feed.
"The mission is pin plus kill the core, the priority is the family’s survival over the kill, plus the boundary is that no section is fought for pride."
"The return is the bell, the doctrine, plus every rule we have written in blood plus charcoal."
Juna wrote it, read it back, plus dropped her hand.
"Tomorrow," she said, "the technique meets its exam."
Twenty skies stood over the Last City that night, under a cold moon the color of old, patient bone.
Beneath them, in three districts, a three-faced guard stood watch over an engine it was failing to save from its own rescuers.
It counted threats, patient as stone, in a language older than the city’s name.
It counted threats to three, because counting to three was everything it had ever known.
Tomorrow it would learn, at length plus in writing, what nine specialists plus one divided man could do to a thing that had never needed to count past three.
