Chapter 492: The Road Has Three Hearts

  • Next Chapter

The tower doors opened into a registry hall built around a circular well, with white lines carrying records into the engine above.

Hajin kept Phase Lock closed, though a gold mark rested on his forearm like a line waiting for another pause.

Ferra walked to the well and held her copper needle above the center.

The needle turned east, stopped, then turned west before pointing upward through the ceiling.

She said, "The engine isn’t one structure, because three defense hearts are answering from separate parts of the country."

Sera stood beside the well and replied, "The Last City has one Warden line, and its three hearts keep every district supplied, sheltered, and defended."

Eirwen studied the white records and asked, "Do the hearts share one custodian, or do three people hold three positions under the same authority?"

Sera hesitated before answering, "The city remembers one custodian, though the current records list only one command layer."

Hajin looked at Ferra and said, "Show us what the records hide, because a memory that combines three positions may also combine three decisions."

Ferra set three copper pins around the well, and the white floor divided into three images.

Images showed a river gate, mountain shelter, and northern tower buried inside cloud.

Each image carried one heartbeat, and all three paused together whenever the registry received an update.

Aria displayed a notice above Hajin’s wrist after the pins settled:

[Distributed defense network detected, three hearts active, central custodian grammar incomplete]

Hajin read the notice and thought, ’The city placed one duty across three locations, though its command still expects one answer.’

Rumi touched the eastern image and said, "The river heart protects the lower districts, and its route crosses every shelter road near the wall."

Nari touched the western image and replied, "The mountain heart holds the outer weather, while its exits can close the country behind anyone who enters."

Juna looked toward the cloud tower and said, "The northern heart controls the sky bridges, and its signal reaches every patrol route we passed."

Sera lowered her gaze and answered, "The hearts must agree before the city acts, because disagreement once allowed a foreign army through the northern gate."

Hajin asked, "What happened to the people who held the hearts when that army arrived?"

Sera pressed her fingers against the registry rail and replied, "The custodian vanished, and the Warden Council joined the three memories so no later keeper could retreat alone."

Eirwen’s twelve Shards dimmed as she said, "They turned three positions into one will, then called the result protection because the city survived."

Ferra moved a copper pin closer to the eastern image and said, "The hearts are active, because each one still adjusts pressure through the vertical engine."

Hajin placed his hand above the well without touching it, and the tattoo along his forearm warmed.

The eastern heart answered first, sending a gold line from the river image through the registry floor.

Hajin kept his hand still as the line reached the tattoo, then closed his fingers before the path could enter his wrist.

Aria displayed a notice above Hajin’s wrist:

[Foreign route resonance matched, first heart response available, sequential contact permitted]

Hajin read the message and said, "I can answer one heart, though sequential contact may teach the next heart to expect the same body."

Ferra replied, "The tattoo carries distributed refusal grammar, and the city may recognize it as the missing custodian’s replacement."

Sera stepped toward the well and said, "If the engine accepts you, the city can restore protection without asking three citizens to hold the burden."

Hajin looked toward the refugees and answered, "A replacement custodian is still a custodian, and nobody asked me to carry a country."

The eastern line faded, and the western heart pulsed through the floor before the first response vanished.

Hajin opened Phase Lock, caught the western rhythm, and felt the tattoo tear along another pathway beneath his skin.

Pain crossed his arm as the river heart’s gold line dissolved behind him.

Aria displayed a warning above his wrist:

[Sequential heart conflict, first frequency lost, second pathway damaged before stabilization]

Hajin pulled his hand away and said, "The first heart is gone from the sample, and the second one has torn a new path without becoming stable."

Ferra closed one pin and replied, "One nervous system cannot carry three live positions in sequence, because every heart demands a present body."

Juna looked at the three images and said, "The city built a defense assuming one custodian could stand in three places at once."

Sera answered, "The records say the old custodian could, and the city has waited since that body disappeared."

Hajin studied the cloud tower and asked, "What happens when the hearts disagree now?"

Sera looked toward the white lines crossing the floor and replied, "The command layer chooses the most urgent district, and every other heart pauses until the order reaches it."

Hajin thought of the riders losing three seconds together and said, "That is why the patrols stop, because the city delays bodies while one distant decision crosses the country."

Ferra placed her hand over the center of the well and answered, "The engine has three hearts, though the registry gives them one nervous system made from memory."

Eirwen raised one Shard toward the northern image and said, "A living forest would let three roots answer separately, but the Forest Remembers remains too damaged to connect this scale."

Hajin closed his hand around the Chain and replied, "We don’t force Eirwen’s Zone into the engine, and we don’t make my tattoo pretend it can occupy three places."

The city bells rang once above the tower, and all three heart images brightened together.

The eastern heart sent a line toward the refugee road, the western heart sealed a mountain exit, and the northern heart opened a sky bridge.

Every white record in the hall shifted toward the same command before Sera’s face lost three seconds of expression.

Hajin kept Phase Lock open and marked the beginning of the pause across the floor.

When Sera returned, she looked at the gold line and said, "The engine is asking whether you can take the missing position before the next update arrives."

Hajin answered, "It is asking whether I will become one body stretched across three hearts, and the answer is no."

Ferra lifted the three pins and said, "Then the city needs a method that divides presence without multiplying authority, because one heart cannot remain unanswered."

Ash stood near the doorway with his Ringlet hidden and asked, "Does the old network have another method?"

Sera looked at him and replied, "The records mention temporary bodies, though the Warden Council sealed that section after the last custodian died."

Hajin’s tattoo warmed again, and a broken image appeared above the well showing three figures sharing one face.

Aria displayed a final notice above Hajin’s wrist:

[Custodian division reference detected, technique incomplete, Ring allocation requirement unknown]

Hajin studied the image and thought, ’The city has shown me a solution without giving me the skill, and the three hearts have finally named the limitation.’

Ferra gathered her pins and said, "We need the sealed record before the engine asks again, because the next pause may arrive with a district trapped beneath it."

Eirwen turned toward the registry doors and replied, "Then we request access as guests, and the city can refuse before we touch another heart."

Sera opened a white record beside the well and answered, "The Warden Council will hear you, though the three hearts will continue waiting while the request travels upward."

Eirwen closed the well record and passed it to Sera, saying, "One heart cannot guard three roads," as the registry doors opened toward the northern route.
