All My Summons Are Legendary
Chapter 55: Class Promotion Offer
Lazarus did not close the door.
He stepped out onto the third landing with the metal disc closed in his left hand and the infantry spear already forming in his right. The narrow stairwell below held the dark-coated man alone, one shoulder against the wall, the false pocket watch open in his palm as if time were a document he preferred to read directly.
"Put the Projection away," the man said. "If I had come to force the chamber, you would not have heard the watch."
"Where is she?"
"In interval holding. As her note correctly guessed. Marked names are not removed from Academy grounds until the first closed session of visiting reviewers concludes. That session begins in three hours. After it ends, the holding status converts, and the stair behind you becomes irrelevant."
The spear remained in Lazarus’s hand.
"You used her as leverage to bring me here."
"I used a schedule you were already failing to outrun." The man’s face stayed forgettable, almost politely blank. "The selection interest was never limited to one first-year who wins supervised bouts. It includes the girl whose Voice has been whispering residual assessment language since childhood, and it includes you—the student who opens sealed cabinets and recognizes Desecrator phrasing on sight. The reviewers were going to reach both of you. I simply arranged for you to arrive with more context than they prefer."
"What do you want?"
"An arrangement." The man closed the watch. "There is a class promotion offer being prepared for the top of the mid-term recognition band. Accelerated evaluation track. Partial access to restricted instructional resources. A formal recommendation chain that bypasses ordinary first-year pacing. The Academy believes it is rewarding contest performance. Certain external parties believe it is a convenient corridor for closer observation under consent."
Lazarus’s grip on the spear adjusted by a fraction.
"And Nyssa?"
"Her marking can still be interrupted before the session converts. Not cleanly. Not without cost. But it can be interrupted if someone with a competing claim on the relevant residual signatures is already standing inside the Association’s temporary evaluation frame." The man tilted his head. "Accept the promotion track when it is offered. Enter the frame willingly. Once inside, you become harder to extract and harder to isolate. So does anyone whose marking is procedurally adjacent to yours."
"That is not a guarantee."
"It is a better position than a maintenance stair and a disc you cannot spend." The man stepped aside, clearing the descent. "The offer posts in the morning. The closed session ends at midnight. You have until then to decide whether you want to keep treating this as a sequence of recoveries, or whether you are prepared to step onto the list on purpose."
He left the stairwell without waiting for an answer. His footsteps faded into the ordinary noise of the annex above.
Lazarus dismissed the spear and stood alone on the landing until the residual pressure of the sealed presence settled into a lower, watchful hum. Then he went back through the panel, sealed it, and returned to the visible Academy with the disc still closed in his hand.
He attended the remaining afternoon class.
He was seen in the dining hall.
He walked the central courtyard route under the artificial evening light so that any observation window currently open would have a simple, boring record of a first-year student completing an ordinary day.
Madeline found him near the East Wing as the light began to fail. She took one look at his face and abandoned whatever lighter greeting she had prepared.
"You found something."
"I found a timeline," Lazarus said. "Nyssa is still on grounds. That may not remain true past midnight."
Madeline’s expression hardened. "Then we go to Neron. Or Drakon. Or anyone with authority to freeze a holding interval."
"Authority is the problem. The people who set the interval outrank the people who would be asked to freeze it." He did not show her the disc. "There may be a narrower option. A class promotion track for the top of the recognition band. If the offer is real, accepting it puts me inside the same evaluation frame the reviewers are using. That is not a rescue. It is a different kind of proximity."
"You’re considering walking into their structure on purpose."
"I am considering the version of the next twelve hours in which Nyssa is still here at dawn."
Madeline was silent for a long moment. When she spoke again, her voice was tighter.
"Then I’m not letting you do the rest of this alone. If a promotion list posts, and if your name is on it, mine will be near enough to matter. Tomas can hold the technical sessions. I can be visible in the same corridors you are visible in. Selection likes clean isolations. We make isolation more expensive."
Lazarus studied her.
"This is not a drill correction."
"I know what it is." She held his gaze. "You taught me transitions so the gap wouldn’t kill me in a contest. Don’t ask me to watch a different kind of gap open and do nothing."
He did not argue.
They separated before curfew fully locked the dormitory floors. Lazarus reinforced the Fog, tested the sealed boundary, and found the presence on the other side still leaning—patient, interested, as if the concept of a promotion corridor and a marking deadline occupied adjacent space in a logic he did not yet fully see.
He did not sleep.
At first light he went to the mid-term band board.
A new notice had been posted before dawn, seal crisp, language administrative and polite:
*Accelerated Evaluation Track — Recognition Band*
*Selected students from the secondary recognition tier are offered provisional placement on an accelerated instructional and evaluation track for the remainder of the academic cycle. Benefits include supervised access to advanced Projection methodology modules, priority scheduling for formal assessments, and formal notation in Association-facing progress files. Acceptance is voluntary. Deadline for confirmation: end of day.*
Three names.
Veyra.
Lazarus.
And a third student from the Class A heavy group that had taken first in the contest aggregate.
Nyssa’s name was not on the list.
Madeline’s was not either.
The corridor around the board was already filling. Veyra stood a few paces away, reading the notice with a carefully neutral expression. When she noticed Lazarus she gave a short, precise nod—acknowledgment without alliance.
"They move quickly when they decide the band is interesting," she said. "I assume you were expecting something in this shape."
"In this shape," Lazarus said. "Not necessarily these names."
"Zurbluris will take it as a further insult. The Association reviewers will take it as consent." Her eyes flicked toward the administrative complex. "If you accept, you should assume every subsequent session is observed by someone who is not grading for education."
"I know."
He left his confirmation at the administrative desk before the first bell.
The clerk who received it did not comment. The seal he applied to the acceptance card was the ordinary Academy seal. Beneath it, almost invisible unless the light struck at a low angle, was a secondary impression no larger than a fingernail—the same residual assessment mark cut into the disc in Lazarus’s sleeve.
The frame had recognized him.
The rest of the morning passed in a thin, stretched calm. Lazarus attended the scheduled lecture. He was visible. He was ordinary on the surface. Madeline shadowed the same routes without crowding him, a second moving point that made clean isolation harder for anyone still watching from the edges.
At midday Neron found him.
The instructor did not bother with a classroom. He stopped Lazarus in the short open stretch behind the practical halls, golden eyes fully awake for once.
"You accepted the track."
"Yes."
"And the girl is still missing from schedule."
"Yes."
Neron’s mouth thinned. "Then listen carefully. The closed session ended after midnight. Holding intervals either convert or collapse when those sessions end. If she is still on Academy grounds, the accelerated track may be the only formal structure left that can force a visibility conflict. If she is not—" He stopped. Restarted. "If she is not, the track becomes a different kind of door, and you have just agreed to walk through it without knowing which room is on the other side."
"Where would a converted holding status take her?"
"Off the student maps. On the Association’s temporary ledger for residual cases. After that, recovery stops being an Academy problem."
Neron glanced past him, checking the path.
"There is one more thing. The third name on your promotion list—the Class A student—withdrew his acceptance an hour ago. Medical excuse. Sudden. That leaves two. Veyra. You. External structures dislike empty slots on a curated list. They fill them."
He closed the pocket watch as if punctuating a sentence.
"If a third name appears before evening, check it before you celebrate the mathematics."
Neron left.
Lazarus stood alone in the narrow stretch behind the halls until the next bell forced the corridors back into motion.
He returned to the recognition board at the first opportunity.
The notice had been updated.
Three names again.
Veyra.
Lazarus.
And Nyssa.
Beside her name, in smaller administrative script, a new status had been stamped:
*Provisional — Pending Transfer Clearance.*
Not missing.
Not held.
Pending transfer.
The frame had filled its empty slot.
And the transfer clearance window was already counting down.
