Chapter 189: Chapter 188: Because I Was Too Curious
"Zhou Diao! What are you doing here?!" Feng Ling was truly speechless.
’If you’re going to come, at least knock!’
’What’s the deal with sneaking in here, all dressed in black leather and skulking around?!’
"...Feng Ling?" On the ground, Zhou Diao’s eyes were bloodshot, and he was bleeding from his mouth and nose to varying degrees. He could only identify Feng Ling by the sound of her voice.
His vision was spinning; he couldn’t see anything clearly. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have been completely overpowered the entire fight.
"Damn it, he’s poisoned!" Feng Ling grabbed Zhou Diao and shook him. "Hey! Do Hellhounds have poison resistance? Don’t you dare die! And even if you do, don’t die here! If Su Yuqing finds out, I won’t be able to clear my name even if I jump into the Daqing River!—Little Skeleton!"
Feng Ling shouted toward the sales office.
The sounds of the fight had already attracted the tenants on the second floor.
But Huangfu Miaomiao, Li Qing, and Bao Changzhi weren’t skilled in combat. Seeing how fierce the fight below was, they wisely chose not to come down.
Upon being called, Huangfu Miaomiao jolted, transforming into a Ghost Shadow. She slid down the outer wall from the window and quickly arrived at Feng Ling’s side.
"Give him the shot, hurry!" Feng Ling urged.
At this moment, Ye Zheng also seemed to recognize Zhou Diao. She stood blankly to the side, her expression filled with confusion and bewilderment.
The injection took effect quickly.
The wounds on Zhou Diao’s body began to heal, and his vision cleared up.
Feng Ling let out a sigh of relief, then scolded him irritably, "What are you doing climbing my courtyard wall in the middle of the night instead of sleeping?"
"You... you, you..." Zhou Diao pointed at Feng Ling, his ragged breathing not yet settled. "How dare you keep a Pollution Body in the city center!"
"Are you serious?" Feng Ling’s eyes went wide. "This isn’t the first day you’ve known I’m keeping a Pollution Body! Is it so shocking that you had to climb my wall in the middle of the night?!"
Zhou Diao was still furious. "Not only are you keeping a Pollution Body... but Old Su is covering for you!"
Feng Ling rolled her eyes, speechless.
"Alright, if you’re fine, get back home and go to sleep." She forcefully pulled Zhou Diao up from the ground and pushed him toward the sheet metal gate.
The wounds on Zhou Diao’s body still ached. He grimaced in pain as he walked toward the gate, still muttering, "You guys have gone too far, way too far... This is the city center! You’re a lunatic, and Old Su is actually going along with your madness! Oww, it hurts..."
Feng Ling mocked him, "So you sniffed your way here following Captain Su’s scent, huh? What a sharp nose you have."
Zhou Diao stumbled forward as he was pushed. "Feng Ling, I’m telling you, you have to move out! This is a serious matter! It was lucky it was me tonight. If an ordinary citizen had accidentally broken in, they would’ve been torn to shreds by that Pollution Body by now!"
Feng Ling snorted. "The sheet metal wall outside is two meters high. What citizen would be dumb enough to climb over it just to wander around an unfinished building?"
"What if someone did?" Zhou Diao insisted on an example. "Maybe a homeless person wants to come in to find a place to spend the night, only to die an innocent death."
"Tsk. If a homeless person is agile enough to climb a two-meter-plus wall, they might as well go work construction. Why would they still be homeless?"
By then, the two had reached the gate. With a light push, Feng Ling shoved Zhou Diao completely outside, then unceremoniously slammed the gate shut.
"Bye-bye," she said, seeing him out.
Outside the wall, Zhou Diao was incredibly frustrated.
He clutched his still-bleeding wound. Recalling the earlier danger, he shuddered with lingering fear.
That Pollution Body was too strong. It was fast, powerful, and, most lethally, poisonous! He had almost lost his life to it!
He had no idea where Feng Ling had gotten it from!
’A monster this dangerous... are they keeping it around to celebrate the holidays instead of killing it? And Old Su isn’t even stopping her! It’s preposterous!’
’What on earth is Old Su thinking? It can’t be that after Ms. Ye died, he transferred his affections and fell for Feng Ling, right?’
’No, that’s impossible...’ Zhou Diao was horrified by his own thought. He shook his head repeatedly, completely unable to accept it!
The real reason Zhou Diao had snuck over tonight was that he was too curious.
Recently, Su Yuqing had been visiting this place far too frequently.
Zhou Diao never questioned Su Yuqing’s actions, because he believed that whatever Su Yuqing did, he had his reasons.
But the strange thing was, even after the news of Ye Zheng’s death came out, Su Yuqing kept coming here.
Based on Zhou Diao’s understanding of Su Yuqing, he should have been devastated by the news of her death, completely unable to recover. After all, just the news of Ye Zheng’s disappearance had caused Su Yuqing’s hair to turn white overnight. Now that the news of her death was out, how could Su Yuqing possibly be in the mood for renovations?
It didn’t make sense!
Zhou Diao himself had cried his eyes out. He couldn’t accept the "indifference" Su Yuqing was showing. He suspected there was a secret hidden in the unfinished building, so he had snuck in.
He hadn’t expected to be nearly beaten to death...
As Zhou Diao thought of this, his indignation and frustration converged into a bitter sorrow.
He had actually deluded himself into thinking he could avenge Ye Zheng. He couldn’t even defeat a single Pollution Body. What right did he have to avenge Ye Zheng?
His application to absorb a new Card had been sent out days ago, but there was no response.
’If there’s no response, will I be this weak forever?’
Zhou Diao refused to accept it. His mind was filled with the face of that Pollution Body. Even though he had only gotten one look before the poison clouded his vision, he would never forget its hideous face!
Grayish-brown fur, pale skin, blood-red pupils, and eyes perpetually filled with fury and madness! A monster through and through!
But for some reason, he had a faint sense of familiarity...
Zhou Diao slowly took a couple of steps forward. ’Could it be a hallucination from the poison?’ he thought.
’Yeah, it must be a hallucination.’
’Otherwise, it wouldn’t make sense for a Pollution Body to look like...’
’Like...’
...
...
Zhou Diao stopped in his tracks, stunned.
He stood frozen in the night for a long time. Finally, with an expression of disbelief, he spun around to face the tall building, strode forward, and started pounding on the sheet metal gate!
BANG! BANG! BANG!
The loud noise echoed in the dead of night.
Feng Ling yanked the gate open, furious, and immediately yelled, "Are you crazy?! What the hell is wrong with you!"
"I...!" Zhou Diao’s gaze passed over Feng Ling and fixed on Ye Zheng in the distance. His throat tightened, and he was suddenly unable to speak.
"First you climb the wall, now you’re banging on the gate. You’re trying to keep people from sleeping, aren’t you? What do you want?" Feng Ling blocked the entrance, fuming.
Zhou Diao stood there, dumbfounded. He felt like he suddenly understood everything, and yet, at the same time, understood nothing at all.
Slowly coming to his senses, he took a deep breath, put on a fierce expression, and pointed at Feng Ling. "I came back to tell you not to be so arrogant!"
After saying this, he turned coolly, walked to his motorcycle parked on the roadside, and sped away.
Feng Ling quirked her lips and closed the iron gate.
She walked back to Ye Zheng’s side and said, a little annoyed, "I think he recognized you."
Ye Zheng said nothing.
After a moment, she looked down at her own bloodstained hands.
Zhou Diao’s blood was still on them.
Ye Zheng’s pupils trembled. As if hit by a massive shock, she suddenly bolted into the building! The sound of her running echoed through the empty structure, accompanied by hysterical screams.
Hearing the noise, Baozi came running from the sales office.
Before he could get close, Feng Ling waved him off. "It’s fine. Let her vent for a while. I’ll keep an eye on her."
Baozi was indeed tired. The recovery of spiritual power was much slower than physical stamina, so he went back to rest.
Feng Ling gazed at the tall building and murmured, "Zhou Diao, look at the trouble you’ve caused me. Looks like I won’t be getting any sleep tonight."
