Chapter 185: Chapter 183: Jiang Xia is a Clinger
By the end of the meal, both Jiang Xia and Wang Ming were drunk. Li Weiya drove Jiang Xia to the entrance of his residential complex, and Lin Yanwan helped him home.
"Mom, Jiang Xia’s a little drunk," Lin Yanwan said, a bit embarrassed and worried her mother-in-law would think she hadn’t taken good care of her son.
Xia Shanshan caught the strong scent of alcohol on him and frowned. "Oh, my. Why did he drink so much? Quick, come in, come in. Where did you two eat tonight?"
"Wang Ming got his acceptance letter from the Central Academy of Fine Arts, so everyone got together to celebrate. He ended up drinking too much," Lin Yanwan explained, her face flushing.
"Oh, a celebration party, I see. The Central Academy of Fine Arts is quite impressive."
"Yes, that’s right."
Xia Shanshan nodded. She knew Wang Ming. He and Jiang Xia had been classmates since they were children, and he used to come over to play all the time.
Come to think of it, she had even been Wang Ming’s elementary school teacher. In the blink of an eye, both boys had gotten into college.
"By the way, Yanwan, you didn’t drink, did you?"
"No, he wouldn’t let me."
"That’s as it should be. A girl should never drink when she’s out." Xia Shanshan took Jiang Xia from her. Jiang Wende had already poured a glass of cool water and was now pouring it down his son’s throat.
"Yanwan, make yourself at home. I’ll go make him some hangover soup. In a bit, I’ll have his dad drive you home," Xia Shanshan said.
"Mom, you don’t have to go to all that trouble. Wang Ming’s mom is still waiting for me outside the complex. I’ll just say a few words to Jiang Xia and then I’ll leave."
"Alright then. Be careful on your way home."
Lin Yanwan nodded, walked over to Jiang Xia, and crouched down. "Silly, I’m leaving now," she said softly. "You should get some rest."
She had just finished speaking and was about to turn and leave when Jiang Xia grabbed her wrist. "Wife..." he slurred. "D-don’t go. Don’t... leave me..."
Her face flushed, and she instinctively glanced at her parents-in-law. As if on cue, the older couple both turned to look somewhere else.
"Ahem, Old Jiang, didn’t you say you had some company forms to fill out?"
"Oh, oh, right! They’re due tomorrow. I almost forgot."
And so, one of them headed to the kitchen to make the hangover soup, while the other slipped into the study to fill out forms. Soon, only Jiang Xia and Lin Yanwan were left in the living room.
She couldn’t help but feel a pang of exasperation.
’This guy... Every time he gets drunk, he spouts nonsense without any regard for the situation. I can never tell if he’s really drunk or just faking it.’
"Alright, alright, I’m not leaving. I’ll stay for now, okay?" Lin Yanwan pinched Jiang Xia’s cheek. His face was flushed red from the alcohol, and his eyes were hazy. ’He’s actually kind of cute.’
"I don’t want my wife to leave..."
"You really can’t stand to be without her, huh?"
"Mhmm..." Jiang Xia smacked his lips and mumbled, "I won’t lose her again..."
A wave of sweetness washed over her. She whispered, "What’s so great about her, anyway? Why do you like her so much?"
"Everything about her is perfect. She’s the world’s best... best wife... I just want to hold her..."
Lin Yanwan sat beside him, guided him by the shoulders to lie down, and then gently placed his head on her lap. She caressed his face. "But you’re holding her right now, aren’t you?"
Jiang Xia forced his eyes open. The blurry figure before him slowly resolved into the face he longed for day and night.
"Wife... I love you. I love you so much." He turned, burying his face in her stomach and hugging her tight, deliriously inhaling her scent.
Lin Yanwan’s body went stiff, and she gritted her teeth in frustration.
’This guy! Can’t he think about his image for a second?!’
’If Mom and Dad see us like this... *sob*... how will I ever be able to show my face again?’
"I have to go. Aunt Li is still waiting for me downstairs," she said, gently patting his back.
"Nooo~ I don’t want my wife to leave! I want to sleep with my wife! I want to hold my wife while we sleep!" Jiang Xia’s voice came out muffled against her stomach, yet it sounded incredibly determined.
Lin Yanwan’s expression darkened. ’His true colors really show when he’s drunk. After all that talk, his one and only goal was still to get me into bed, huh!’
’Is he really not afraid of my dad breaking his legs?!’
"Go tell your parents. If they agree, I have no objections," Lin Yanwan said testily.
"But we’re already... already..." Jiang Xia’s voice suddenly softened. "...already married... I miss you so much, baby..."
Lin Yanwan pressed her lips together, her feelings a tangled mess. They had shared a bed for eight years; how could she not want to be held by him as she slept? Having grown used to the warmth of his chest, sleeping all alone always felt like something was missing.
"I miss you too. Once we’re married, we can hold each other to sleep every night."
She helped Jiang Xia sit up and gave him a gentle kiss on the lips. "Hubby, get a good rest tonight. I’ll come see you tomorrow, okay? I’m leaving now. Be good~"
Jiang Xia nodded dazedly. "I want another kiss from my wife..."
’So clingy, just like a little kid.’
"Mwah~"
After finally placating the clingy guy, Lin Yanwan let out a slow breath of relief. She walked into the kitchen and saw Xia Shanshan making the hangover soup over a high flame.
"Mom, I’ll be heading back now," she said, her face flushing slightly. "Thank you for taking care of him."
"Mhm, be safe on your way, Yanwan."
Xia Shanshan watched her daughter-in-law with a beaming smile. ’Hearing her call me ’Mom’ is just so sweet.’
’The two of them have such a good relationship. They act just like a married couple. Anyone who didn’t know better would think they’d been married for ages.’
She carried the hangover soup out and looked at her son, who was still fast asleep on the sofa, her eyes filled with amusement.
’I never knew my little brat was so smooth, using drunkenness as an excuse to whisper sweet nothings. He’s just like his father was when he was young. Like father, like son, I suppose.’
’If they keep on like this, I might just become a grandmother sooner than I expected.’
"Son, wake up. Drink this ginger soup and then you can go back to sleep."
◇
The car stopped outside Hongyun Garden. Li Weiya looked at her son, dazed and drunk in the passenger seat, and her heart ached for him.
She had seen how Wang Ming had been drinking earlier. As someone who’d been through it herself, she knew that in the end, it was the whole "girlfriend" issue that was tearing him up inside. He’d been rejected by the girl he liked, but his feelings for her ran far, far too deep.
"Ah Ming? Ah Ming?"
Wang Ming unconsciously smacked his lips a few times, his head pillowed on the seat, and went on sleeping.
Li Weiya sighed. Ah Ming had always been like this, even as a child—only sharing good news and never the bad. He kept all his worries bottled up inside. How she wished her son could talk to her about his feelings.
"Ah Ming, Mom really wants to ask... do you still like that girl?" Li Weiya muttered to herself.
She didn’t expect him to answer, but to her surprise, after a few seconds of silence, Wang Ming unconsciously murmured, "I do."
His voice was quiet, but perfectly clear.
