Chapter 538: Extortion

"You..."

Amelia Vance felt a piercing pain in his shoulder.

Renee Strong hurriedly stood in front of him and yelled, "Nina Jacobs! If you want to kill him, you’ll have to kill me first!"

"What are you talking about? I’m a law-abiding citizen. You can’t just go around killing people in the base." A phone had appeared in Nina’s hand at some point, displaying a picture of the two of them hugging.

Would Renee ever die for someone else? Nina didn’t believe it for a second. She was just putting on an act to show her loyalty to Amelia Vance. Renee was obviously clinging to him as her backing. However, Nina remembered that Amelia had a wife at Arisdale Base, and the only reason he had become a big shot in supplies was because of his impressive father-in-law...

Now this was interesting. The reason Amelia had been in such a hurry to kill her just now was probably because he was afraid she would leak his secret.

Looking at the photo in Nina’s hand, Amelia was so furious his blood boiled, but he knew she had leverage over him. Enduring the severe pain in his shoulder, he said, "So it’s Miss Jacobs. This is all a misunderstanding."

Nina smiled. "Since it’s a misunderstanding, there’s no need to apologize to me."

Amelia gritted his teeth. He was the one who got hurt; why should he be the one apologizing? But he also knew that if they really started fighting again now, things would blow completely out of proportion. Moreover, he was no match for Nina.

So, he forced out a smile that looked worse than crying. "I’m sorry, Miss Jacobs. I was being reckless just now. But regarding today’s matter, could I ask you to keep it a secret for me? That photo..."

"A secret? I love keeping secrets for people," Nina interrupted Amelia, while a vicious Diamond Sand Spike materialized in her hand.

"Nina! You can’t kill him!" Even though Renee hadn’t witnessed Nina’s strength with her own eyes, she knew she was not someone to be trifled with anymore.

"What do you want?" Amelia asked, staring at the bizarre Stone Spike. It was clearly an Earth Element Superpower, yet the stone spike reflected specks of golden light. Grits of sand flowed around it, looking as though it could extend and impale a person’s entire body in an instant.

Sure enough, after he spoke, Nina retracted the superpower in her hand. "That depends on Mr. Vance’s sincerity... and capability," she replied.

"Nina, I know you’re still hung up over Liam Grant, but I’ve already broken up with him. Why are you still pestering me the moment you get back?" Renee simply couldn’t figure out why Nina would appear here, but she could tell that this was clear extortion!

"You’re just a mediocre Healer. What gives you the right to think I’d pester you? Hmm?" Nina said coldly.

While Renee gravitated toward the strong, she was also highly conscious of her own abilities. Calling her incompetent was the greatest insult of all. In her previous life, Renee had been a universally praised, top-tier Healer. A mere touch of her healing technique would have the treated patients weeping with gratitude. But now, her aptitude was completely ordinary, and tagging along with Liam had made her waste the prime opportunity to practice her healing technique. She couldn’t even land the most basic Healer position at the City D hospital.

Being called out by Nina made Renee’s face burn with humiliation. Even her rival from her previous life, Paisley Paige, had become an Intermediate Healer, while she was nothing at all. Therefore, she had to hold on tightly to Amelia Vance as her meal ticket!

"My token of sincerity will be delivered later. I hope Miss Jacobs will keep her promise today," Amelia said to Nina through gritted teeth.

"Sure. You two carry on." Nina walked out the stairwell door with her hands in her pockets.

This life was indeed quite different from her previous one. She had never expected Liam and Renee would break up. Regardless of whether they had ulterior motives, being able to extort a fortune right off the bat, while conveniently turning Renee into leverage against Amelia, wasn’t bad at all.

But what about Simon Abbott? Would he go with Liam to the Base A Command? Or had he completely defected to Tyson Hughes of the Superpower User Alliance?

Although Tyson wasn’t valued by the Hughes Family Headquarters, he still represented the Hughes Family behind the scenes. Simon had already secretly pledged allegiance to him a few months ago, selling out Liam in the process. On top of that, Ivan Lawson had also joined the Superpower User Alliance early on and had even been dispatched directly to the Hughes Family Headquarters in City A to build his influence...

What were those two planning? Could it be that there were things about the Hughes Family in her previous life that she didn’t know about?

Nina had already walked back to her door by now. However, hearing the sounds of everyone from the Stellarys Team training next door, she turned around and went inside.

"Captain, you’re back." Holden Shaw had already teleported right in front of her.

"Yeah, I came to drop these off for you." Nina took out some Blood Stopping Spray and placed it on the table inside. "I stockpiled these for everyone a while back."

"So much?" Yvonne Willow was a little surprised. There were a good twenty bottles of Blood Stopping Spray on the table.

Ever since she, Paisley, and the others had been rescued from City J by Nina, she had been serving as the team’s quartermaster here. It was inevitable for everyone to get somewhat injured during their daily outings. Paisley would also go out with them to provide healing on her days off, but most of the time, they relied on the Blood Stopping Spray. Right now, she only had less than half a bottle left in her spatial storage, and that was just the tiny bit remaining after everyone had been using it sparingly.

"Yeah, take your time using them," Nina said.

"This stuff is really good. No wonder the people in the base are so desperate to find Claire Warner. I wonder if she’ll ever come back," Wayne Abbott said as he walked in, leading his son Sawyer Abbott. His wife, Rosamund Hayes, followed close behind.

Sawyer was dressed like a little penguin, with two patches of ruddy plateau flush on his cheeks as he beamed at Nina.

"Sawyer has grown quite a bit." Nina took out a bottle of children’s moisturizing cream and placed it in Sawyer’s hands. The air had actually become drier in the extreme cold. The redness on Sawyer’s face was mostly caused by the dry, freezing weather.

"Thank you." Sawyer still had a few tufts of dog hair stuck to his clothes. At a glance, it was obvious he had just been playing with Lexy.

"Captain, I heard you went to Keldorn this time. How are things over there? Can you tell us about it?" Now that Nina finally had a rare moment of free time, Alaric Fletcher was very curious about how she had gotten to Keldorn.

Unexpectedly, he was interrupted by his own grandmother, who was bringing over hot soup. "Why do you talk so much, child? Let Captain Jacobs have some hot soup to warm up first."

Even though it was just hot water sprinkled with a little brown sugar and minced ginger, Granny Hart would still boil a huge pot of it during training sessions to warm everyone up.

"Thank you, Granny Hart." Nina accepted a piping hot bowl of soup and went on to tell everyone about the situation in Keldorn. She talked about the Lornwood Base and Tomorrow Base, but simply left out the parts that involved herself.

Everyone was completely enthralled, even Ethan Young, who was sitting far away. He hadn’t expected Nina to have gone to such a distant place.

"Imprisoning all the Water Element Superpower Users in such sweltering heat... those people never intended to let anyone live in the first place, did they?" Wendy Marshall, being a Water Element Superpower User herself, found it hard to imagine what an entire base cut off from water would look like.

"I heard the command also sent people to Lornwood Base, but there’s been no follow-up," Chase Gallagher said. Based on what Nina had shared, he guessed that the people sent by the command had likely met with a mishap.

"It’s possible," Nina agreed.

In the apocalypse, some deaths might never be known to anyone. No one would ever know what those people had gone through.
