After I Fully Prepared for the Apocalypse, the Ungrateful Cried with Regret
Chapter 523: A Truly Good Weapon
Not only that, but Nia also noticed that the further they went, the more zombies they encountered.
Almost every half hour, Nina Jacobs and Wayne Warner had to get out and kill a wave of zombies blocking the road.
Just as another stretch of road ahead was swarmed by zombies and Nina Jacobs was about to get out, Nia stopped her.
"I have this in my storage space. Try it."
Nia took out two oval-shaped spheres, then opened the car window and threw them forcefully toward an empty patch of ground in the distance.
With a BANG, the devices detonated.
The sound wasn’t loud, but it released two clouds of red mist that seemed completely harmless.
"What is that?" Nina Jacobs asked.
She noticed that the zombies ahead seemed to be drawn to that spot.
"Wait a little longer."
Nia was nervous too; she had shut the car window immediately.
Nina Jacobs watched the scene outside with curiosity.
The zombies that had been rushing toward them were now being drawn to the two clouds of red mist, which hadn’t yet dispersed. They all swarmed toward the spot.
Even the few zombies next to the car turned around.
Clearly, the red mist was more attractive to them.
"Wayne, go now! This thing only lasts for three minutes!"
Nia urged, seeing that the time was right.
"Let’s go."
After Nina Jacobs spoke, Wayne Warner quickly stepped on the gas.
Nia then explained that it was a weapon she had made earlier. It was still in the experimental stage, so she hadn’t used it before.
"I call it the Red Lotus Box. The canister is filled with blood powder made from freeze-dried plasma, plus some nitrocellulose and other materials to maximize the blood powder’s effect..."
"That’s good stuff. It could be a lifesaver in a critical moment."
After hearing how the Red Lotus Box worked, Nina Jacobs couldn’t help but praise it.
It seemed like all of Nia’s inventions were designed to counter zombies.
They might not be very lethal, but they were all useful.
It was the first time Nia had been praised by Nina Jacobs, and she couldn’t help but blush a little.
"Actually, I had a lot of other weapon proposals that were rejected by the higher-ups as soon as I suggested them. They seem to only want highly lethal weapons..."
Nia said.
"But for ordinary survivors, your weapons can actually be used more widely.
In the apocalypse, a truly good weapon should be one that anyone can use."
Hearing Nina Jacobs’s words, Nia looked slightly stunned.
’A truly good weapon?’
She remembered how people used to say she was just a daydreamer.
She had always wanted to create weapons that anyone could use, but everyone around her said it was impossible.
But Nina Jacobs understood her aspirations.
"That’s what I want to do, and I’ll keep doing it in the future."
Nia felt like she was about to cry, but she still managed a smile as she spoke.
"Okay. If you can do it, I’ll help you."
Nina Jacobs said.
Whether it was the Qiankun Tracking Gun or the Red Lotus Box from just now, both were weapons revolutionary enough to cause a public sensation.
Such an inventive talent shouldn’t be buried.
"Really? Then I’ll definitely work hard!"
Nia was suddenly filled with anticipation for the days to come.
But that was all on the condition that they could reach the base safely.
「The next two days」
The temperature dropped even more significantly.
Nia woke up once in the middle of the night and discovered the outside temperature had dropped to -62 degrees Celsius.
For the past two days, their routine was to find a suitable abandoned building, drive the car inside, seal the entrance, and then sleep in the car.
The vehicle’s engine was kept running continuously. Nina Jacobs said it was best not to turn it off, because if they did, it might not start up again the next day.
「That evening」
As they were driving on a road in the suburbs, Nina Jacobs had Wayne Warner stop the car.
"What is it, Nina Jacobs?"
Nia poked her sharp chin out from her turtleneck sweater. It wasn’t cold in the car at all; she just found it comfortable and reassuring to be bundled up in her clothes.
"Outside. Someone is calling for help."
After Nina Jacobs spoke, Nia finally looked outside through the front windshield.
On the roadside were numerous stiff, scattered zombie corpses. Behind them, on a rusty billboard, three letters forming a distress signal had been written in the zombies’ dark blood.
The dark blood had frozen solid in the extreme cold; it was impossible to tell how long ago it had been written.
"Should we go check it out?"
Nia asked.
"Yeah. It’s getting late, and we need to find a place to stay anyway."
Nina Jacobs had Wayne Warner turn onto a side road.
The zombies in the vicinity seemed to have all been killed, and up ahead, the road was blocked by a series of barricades formed with an Earth Element Superpower.
After the car passed, Nina Jacobs used her Earth Element Superpower to restore the barricades.
The chill in the air made every inch of skin feel tight and painful, as if plunged into a frigid ice cellar. Every breath was torture for the lungs.
Nina Jacobs was wearing thermal clothing she had prepared before the apocalypse and had also covered herself in a very thin layer of her Fire Element Superpower, so she quickly adapted to the cold.
"You two wait here for me. I’m going in to take a look."
she said.
Wayne Warner nodded, watching as Nina Jacobs’s figure disappeared into a dilapidated, abandoned building.
The door was unlocked. Nina Jacobs pushed it open and walked inside.
The building appeared to be empty. Nina Jacobs went up the stairs, walked around the second floor, and came back down, only to find a figure huddled in a corner on the first floor.
She frowned slightly.
She clearly remembered that the figure hadn’t been there when she first came in.
But now, upon her return, it had appeared.
It was a man, his face pale from the cold, his hands covered in festering chilblains.
If one didn’t look closely, it would be easy to mistake him for a zombie.
"Help... me."
the man said in a trembling voice.
"Did you write the distress signal outside?"
Nina Jacobs asked.
The man tried to nod, but his body was frozen stiff. Finally, a sound emerged from his dry, hoarse throat.
It was indeed him who had written it.
He hadn’t held out much hope, never expecting someone would actually see it and come in.
"What did you just do?
There was no one here when I came in."
Nina Jacobs was sure her memory wasn’t failing her, so she asked him directly.
The man’s features were rather handsome, but Nina Jacobs saw a hint of hostility in his eyes.
"That’s a shame, then. I don’t rescue suspicious people."
Nina Jacobs stood up, preparing to leave.
The man opened his mouth. His fingers twitched, and a half-meter-high wall of earth rose up to block Nina Jacobs’s path.
The earthen wall wasn’t meant to be lethal. Nina Jacobs turned to look at the man.
"If you can save me, I’ll tell you... my secret."
the man said with difficulty.
"If you don’t tell me first, how can I trust you enough to save you?
I’m not looking to die just yet."
Nina Jacobs’s gaze was calm.
She could see the struggle in the man’s eyes, but she also knew that if she left now, he would surely die.
He had no other choice.
"I’ll... talk."
The man’s pale face looked even more deathly.
But thinking of the revenge he had yet to claim, he couldn’t resign himself to dying here.
If he died, it would all be for nothing. The woman before him was his only chance of survival.
"It’s this."
Nina Jacobs looked at the piece of gray cloth the man was stroking with his fingers.
"What is it?"
Nina Jacobs asked.
"It... can make you invisible."
The man’s words left Nina Jacobs stunned for several seconds.
’No wonder I didn’t see anyone here earlier. So he used this cloth to hide himself?’
’Can something like this really exist in the world?’
However, since she already had an "Invisibility Potion," she didn’t show much interest in the object.
