Chapter 312: Chapter 303 — The Name Everyone Heard II

The people went first.

The woman with the basket, the soldiers on the eastern wall, the child on the parapet — all of them thinning out at the edges, going pale, and gone, and the courtyard was suddenly very large and very quiet.

Then the walls. The tower on the keep came down out of the sky the way it had gone up, and the colonnade lost its roof, and the soot came back across the stone in a slow tide.

`[FLOOR EXIT SEQUENCE INITIATED]`

`[LIVE BROADCAST ENDING]`

**[ZeroFan]:** WAIT

**[FloorTheoryIE]:** WHO IS WRATH

**[ShieldMainSiobhan]:** ONE OF THE SEVEN MEANS WHAT??

**[GalwayGoblin]:** DONT YOU DARE END IT

`[FLOOR EXIT — BROADCAST TERMINATED]`

The chat went out.

It was always the same and it always got him. Two million people, and then no people, and the difference between those two states was a silence you could put your hand into. Finn’s head came up at it. Cillian opened his eyes.

They were alone for the first time in seven hours.

---

Nobody used it for a theory.

Maeve got up off the column, looked round at the four of them and Alice, and did the thing she always did, which was to stop the conversation before it started running downhill.

"Right. Before anyone builds anything." She held her injured arm against her ribs. "Here’s what we actually watched. On twenty-eight it came up out of the ground and went back into it. On twenty-nine it left living bodies to get further up the hill and it took the door. Here it was already underneath the whole city before we arrived. That man could hold it without it running him, which none of the others could. James’s scythe takes it apart. He knew the name. Alice says the name belongs to one of the Seven, and that he wasn’t it. And when he died, it survived him and left."

She let that sit for a second.

"That’s the list. Everything past that line is us guessing, and I’m not doing it standing in a floor that’s disappearing."

"Grand," said Finn.

James looked at the corpse one more time.

Then the flagstones under it went, and the corpse went with them, and the last thing on Floor 30 was ash going up instead of down.

---

The Waiting Room took them.

`[HP RESTORED]`

`[MANA RESTORED]`

`[MANA: 3,100 / 3,100]`

Ronan lifted the shoulder before anything else. All the way up, past his ear, round in a full circle — and then again, faster, the way a man does when he does not quite believe the first one.

Finn put a hand flat against his own side, held it there for a second, and took it away.

Cillian rolled his neck until something in it clicked, and then opened and closed his good hand four or five times, watching it.

Maeve did not test anything. She simply took one long breath in and let all of it out, and her shoulders went down about two inches, and she stood there for a moment being a person who was not in pain.

James felt the mana come back into him like water going into a dry bucket.

Alice stood in the middle of all of it, untouched, unrestored, wings folded, exactly as she had been for seven hours.

`[FLOOR 31 AVAILABLE]`

Every one of them saw it.

Not one of them said a word about it, and James left it alone.

`[RETURN TO EARTH IN: 60 SECONDS]`

---

The world came back and it was ten past nine at night and it was raining in Ballymun.

James stood in his own hall with the smell of the house around him and put the scythe down against the wall, and it was a broken half-blade again, and had been since somewhere in the last two minutes of the floor.

His phone was on the hall table where he had left it that morning.

It was moving.

Not much. About a centimetre every few seconds, buzzing itself sideways across the wood in tiny increments, and it had clearly been doing that for some time, because it had started near the middle and was now a hand’s width from the edge.

He picked it up.

The screen was not a list of notifications. It was a wall of them, arriving faster than it could render, stacking and collapsing and stacking again, and it did not stop while he was looking at it.

The clear was in there. FLOOR 30 was in there.

But the thing everybody had kept was the forty seconds.

**TEAM ZERO CLEARS FLOOR 30 — FIRST STORY FLOOR SINCE CAERLEON**

**MYSTERIOUS "WRATH" NAMED DURING FLOOR 30 CLEAR**

**ALICE IDENTIFIES WRATH AS "ONE OF THE SEVEN"**

**FLOOR 30 BOSS WAS NOT WRATH — SO WHO WAS HE?**

James opened one of the clips.

It was the broadcast angle, from behind and to the left, and it showed him standing in a burning courtyard with a black blade in his hand and Alice beside him with her wings open, and it showed him turn his head and ask her what Wrath was, and it showed her wait half a second before she answered.

The word came out of the phone in his own hall, in his mother’s voice-less quiet house, eleven minutes after he had heard a dead man say it.

He locked the screen.

---

The operations channel had forty-one messages in it. He read the last one.

**Guild Zero — Operations:** *Floor 30 inbound volume rising steeply. Stream archive secured and mirrored. Media requests being logged, nothing answered. Analysis team preserving all footage involving the unidentified red phenomenon, flagged priority. Founders’ statement drafted, not issued, pending M. Callahan.*

*Nothing requires founder action tonight.*

James read the last line twice.

Then he put the phone in his pocket.

---

They regrouped at the headquarters at half eleven, because none of them was going to sleep and everybody knew it.

The building was mostly dark. Two of the screening staff were still in the office off the third-floor landing with the lights on, and one of them looked up as the five of them came past and then very carefully did not look up again.

In the strategy room Finn put his boots up on the edge of the table, which he had never once done in Marcus Hale’s. Ronan sat with the ruined shield propped against the leg of his chair, because the Tower had put his shoulder back together and had done nothing whatsoever for eight hundred euro of equipment. Cillian ate most of a bag of something at the end of the table while staring at the wall screen. Maeve took the console.

Alice stood at the end of the table near James, and did not sit down, and nobody suggested she should.

Maeve put up three clips. Not the fights. Three pieces of about eight seconds each.

The first was Floor 28: red coming off a dead Heavy Floor Soldier, gathering, finding a crack and going down.

The second was Floor 29: a bright line crossing sixty metres of terrace in a dead straight run and going into a lit arch.

The third was tonight: the red already lying in the seams under a burned city, before anybody had swung at anything.

"Same thing three times," said Finn.

"Same *behaviour* three times," said Maeve.

"That’s what I said."

"It isn’t." She flicked the frames back. "We’ve got a name now, and I want to be careful with it before somebody starts writing it on things. We do not know that the red is Wrath’s Authority. We don’t know it’s Wrath’s at all. It could be something he made. It could be something he handed to that man. It could be something that grows where a thing like him has been and has nothing to do with him directly." She turned round. "The only hard link we have is that a dying man looked at Alice’s wings and said one word."

"So we don’t label the clips," said James.

"We don’t label the clips."

Cillian raised the bag. "Motion carried. I’ve called it ’the red’ for three floors and I’ll die calling it that."

---

Finn took his boots down.

"Right. Practical." He looked at James. "If Wrath is one of the Seven, and the fella we killed tonight was not Wrath — are we saying Wrath’s above thirty?"

"No."

"James—"

"We’re not saying that, because we don’t know it." James put both hands flat on the table. "Here’s the whole of it. The power came off him, it didn’t die with him, and it left. That’s it. That’s the entire sentence. It didn’t go up, it didn’t go down, it didn’t go through a door — it was there and then it wasn’t, and I don’t know where it went and neither does anybody in this room."

He looked down the table.

Alice did not contradict him.

She also did not add anything, and James watched her not add anything, and let it go for the second time that night.

---

They did not open Floor 31.

It was not a decision anybody made out loud. Finn did not argue for it and Ronan did not argue against it, and Maeve did not put a plan up on the screen, because the plan was obvious to five people who had spent a day being told a thing they did not understand had a name and had got away.

They had just cleared a Story Floor. They had a new problem with no shape to it.

Nobody walks forward on that.

James brought the prompt up anyway.

`[FLOOR 31 AVAILABLE]`

It hung there over the table, over Ronan’s broken shield and Cillian’s crisps and Finn’s chair, exactly the way it had hung over a kitchen in Ballymun two nights before he was ready for Floor 30.

He looked at it for a while.

Then he closed it.

---

Nobody had touched the media console in twenty minutes and it had not stopped moving.

Articles arriving. Clip counts climbing. A panel on some late programme with two people arguing about a word. The bar down the side of Maeve’s screen filled up and reset and filled up again while five people sat in a room and said nothing.

The thing being searched was no longer *James Ganner*.

It was no longer *Alice*, or *Floor 30*, or *Team Zero*, all of which had been at the top of that list every time they came off a floor for the last eleven months.

On the big screen behind them, Maeve’s last frame was still frozen where she had left it: James in a red-lit courtyard, and Alice beside him with four metres of black wing open and a broken halo behind her head, half a second after she had said that Wrath was one of the Seven.

And beside it, on the smaller screen, the trend line kept climbing under three words.

**WHO IS WRATH?**

Nobody in the room had the answer either.
