Chapter 2744: Chapter 1856: City of Zombies

Just like before, Duanmu Huai first deployed a scouting skull to conduct reconnaissance. The others stayed in the Tactical Control Room, awaiting news.

Not long after, a city appeared on the screen.

"Oh?"

Seeing the city on the screen, Duanmu Huai raised an eyebrow, and the other girls were somewhat surprised too.

This was understandable.

Along the way, they had seen numerous cities, most of which looked the same—dark, desolate, or engulfed in flames. This was understandable; after all, zombies lacked intelligence. Even if a system malfunctioned, they wouldn’t repair it, and soon buildings lost power or caught fire due to short circuits or similar reasons.

Naturally, there were no fire brigades to extinguish the flames. Under such circumstances, the cities’ conditions were inevitably terrible. Sometimes, it even triggered chain disasters. Duanmu Huai had previously visited such a city—a chemical city. When the plague broke out, huge fires erupted, setting off the chemical warehouses. By the time Duanmu Huai and the others arrived, it was as if a nuclear bomb had hit the place; nothing much was left, be it survivors or zombies.

Only a few lucky ones barely escaped unscathed.

But now, this city seemed orderly. It was already sunset, yet the city was still illuminated with flashing lights, neon signs, and street lights, making it resemble a fairly normal modern metropolis.

On the roads, vehicles could be seen moving, and plenty of people were coming and going on either side of the street. They appeared calm, a stark contrast to the anxious survivors elsewhere.

The problem, however, wasn’t just with the survivors.

Soon, Duanmu Huai and the others saw what they were looking for on the screen.

Zombies.

"Ugh... ugh..."

A zombie, dressed as a worker, was working on a nearby scaffold. It was making the characteristic moaning sounds of a zombie while hammering the planks in front of it, seemingly intending to nail the wall shut entirely. After nailing one, it reached out to the toolbox next to it for another nail, wobbling but seemingly focused on its task.

"A working zombie, this is the first time I’ve seen one," Lorena couldn’t help but exclaim. After all, the previous zombies would almost only bite, doing nothing else.

"But it doesn’t seem rational, does it?"

Mary was more concerned about another issue. Indeed, the zombie was working, but it appeared more like a tool without self-awareness. Except for lacking mechanical installations, it wasn’t much different from a Mecha Servant.

"Let’s go closer and see,"

Duanmu Huai said while signaling the Servo Skull to approach the zombie. However, even as the Servo Skull circled around it, the zombie remained unfazed, concentrating solely on its task. Then, Duanmu Huai commanded the Servo Skull to extend a tentacle, knocking over the nearby toolbox.

"Clatter."

The tool box on the table was knocked over, finally catching the zombie’s attention. It slowly turned around, stared blankly at the Servo Skull with lifeless eyes, then squatted down to put the scattered tools back into the toolbox.

"This feels no different from a Mecha Servant,"

Mianmu Zuoniao voiced what everyone was thinking, and the others nodded in agreement. Mecha Servants were like this, only responding to their immediate tasks, not performing actions outside of their programming without specific instructions.

"Let’s check other places."

Soon, with the Servo Skull’s reconnaissance, the team gained a preliminary understanding of the city.

In this city, zombies were clearly divided into three types. The lowest-tier zombies, similar to Mecha Servants, performed simple tasks without self-thinking abilities. The second type had some self-awareness, primarily used to block streets, much like intelligent guards.

The last type was virtually indistinguishable from humans—apart from their corpse-like bluish skin, they showed no differences externally.

These individuals resided in the tallest buildings, likely making them the ruling class.

"What do we do, Mr. Duanmu?"

After a simple evaluation of the city’s situation, Mary looked to Duanmu Huai for advice. Clearly, by Tribunal standards, this city needed complete purification. The only issue now was how to do it; given that the Tribunal viewed such a zombie ideology as absolute heresy, the only consideration was whether to vaporize, explode, boil, or fry them.

There’s no possibility of not choosing.

"Hmm........"

Duanmu Huai stared at the screen in front of him, silent for a moment.

"Charge right in."

Then, he gave the order.

The survivors under his command had already been baptized by Aliens and Demons, so it was time to let them witness the most twisted, most evil, most troublesome enemy the Tribunal faced.

"The Heretics must die!"

With Duanmu Huai’s command, the destruction of this city also began.

For the residents of this city, this was their small utopia in this post-apocalyptic world. Here, they could live alongside those Zombies without worrying about being attacked. But unfortunately, their days of peace were coming to an end.

A massive Fireball streaked across the night sky, crashing into the buildings and erupting. The entire city was plunged into a brutal and destructive war.

The Floating Island itself didn’t have weapons like Macro Cannons or Light Spears, but Medea was enough to serve as the firepower turret. She stood at the forefront of the Floating Island, facing the brilliantly lit city, raised her hands, and then, Magic Beams and Flames rained down from the sky, starting a full-scale bombardment on the city.

As the Floating Island descended once more, the Tribunal’s soldiers swarmed out, weapons in hand, charging into the city turned sea of fire without hesitation, led by the Soul Guards.

Duanmu Huai had made it very clear to them, this was a city of Heresy, and it must be completely destroyed. The fact that humans could coexist with Zombies in this twisted state had to be utterly eradicated. In the past, these soldiers might have had doubts about this, but now they had become loyal believers of the Tribunal, and what they had to do was use every method to prove their loyalty to the Tribunal!

For the city’s inhabitants, the sudden attack left them completely dumbfounded. They didn’t even know what was happening before they were knocked to the ground, turning into corpses. As for these civilians, the Tribunal’s stance was also clear—all must be killed, not a single one left!

Heretical thoughts and behaviors are both dangerous and destructive. Knowing it is heresy and not taking action is itself a heretical act. Allowing friends or family to join a Heretical Cult, or tolerating heretical behavior in other ways, is also heretical!

Condoning heresy is betraying humanity!

Loyalty that is not absolute is absolutely disloyal!

The Heretics must die!

At this moment, it was clear that the city’s rulers also responded. Soon, Zombies armed with weapons and ammunition quickly assembled into an army, trying to resist the Tribunal’s advance. Although these Zombies also feared no death and had powerful weapon support, the Soul Guards were not pushovers. Those who completely obeyed the Tribunal and got the chance to return to this world wielded Sharp Blades and charged into the Zombie hordes amidst gunfire and explosions, slicing them into pieces.

Then, the Tribunal marched forward, quickly reaching the city’s core area.

"What exactly is happening?"

Standing atop the apartment building, a pale-faced boy gazed at the burning city before him, gritting his teeth. And he was the ruler of this city.

This boy was originally just an ordinary person. When the plague broke out, he was also attacked and bitten by Zombies. At that time, the boy was in utter despair, even contemplating ending his own life.

However, to his surprise, he didn’t die as he thought he would. Instead, he found that after that, he was no longer attacked by Zombies. Moreover, the boy dreamed of a mysterious existence, and under its guidance, he even learned to use his Spiritual Power to control and command the Zombies, making them awaken to self-awareness once more.

Of course, these Zombies were utterly loyal to him!

After that, the boy gradually reclaimed the city, and the survivors looked up to him as their leader. This filled the boy with an unprecedented sense of pride and determination; he secretly resolved to use this power to rule this country, turning it into a place where Zombies and Humans could peacefully coexist!

After all, these Zombies were free labor! As long as he could completely control them, rebuilding a country was a piece of cake, wasn’t it?

But now, everything was ruined!

"Boom!!!"

The buildings in front of him exploded suddenly, shining brightly amid the noise. The boy gritted his teeth again, turning around to look behind him, where several girls in maid outfits were standing, who were his classmates, now his companions.

"Let’s go, we need to eliminate the intruders!"
