A Bumpy Road to Power

Chapter 1045 - 1045

  • Next Chapter

This is Heath Woods' first time working on a case with Dirk Carter.

He had absolutely no clue about Dirk Carter's methods.

Seeing the scene unfold before him,

he was the most anxious one.

He leaned closer to Dirk Carter, complaining, "Secretary General Carter, the doors of the Grand Theater are all closed, where are we supposed to catch anyone? Brent Lowell isn't stupid; he wouldn't just open the door and let you catch him, right?"

"Heath, don't worry, be patient, look at how nice the night is,"

said Dirk Carter.

Seeing Dirk Carter still have the leisure to look at the sky,

Heath Woods felt helpless.

He sighed.

Murmured, "Isn't this just a waste of time? Had I known, I might as well have just stayed at the hotel and had a good night's sleep."

Saying that,

he sat down on the nearby greenbelt.

He took out a cigarette from his pocket,

but before he could light it,

a click was heard,

and the lights inside the Grand Theater's transparent glass doors turned on.

Then,

the two doors were pushed open.

Brent Lowell strolled out casually from inside.

Heath Woods quickly stood up,

and said incredulously, "He actually came out? Secretary General Carter, is this some kind of magic?"

Dirk Carter smiled slightly,

and said, "Of course, he had to come out. If he doesn't meet me, how would he know if I have any backup plans? Guilty people are always lacking composure."

Heath Woods suddenly understood.

It wasn't that Dirk Carter had some kind of magic, but that he understood human nature.

Even if Brent Lowell was confident,

he was still afraid that Dirk Carter might have some variables.

Moreover, since they have already been approached, the issue must be resolved.

"You must be Secretary General Carter from the Municipal Commission for Discipline Inspection? Why didn't you let me know you were coming from afar? I could've met you at the highway entrance."

At this time,

Brent Lowell had already come forward.

He said to Dirk Carter with a characteristic smile.

"I didn't announce my arrival, yet here we are standing face to face, aren't we, Secretary Lowell?"

"Hahaha…Indeed, Majestic Peak Town is a tourist city, with so many people coming and going, one must always be vigilant. Otherwise, how else could Majestic Peak Town have developed to this extent?"

His words had underlying meanings.

Dirk Carter understood the implication.

He was hinting that all of Carter's actions were under his watch.

He'd seen arrogance, but never this level of arrogance.

Even with the Secretary General of the Discipline Inspection Commission at his door, he still dared to be so provocative.

Smiling, "Since it's a tourist city, your hospitality must be impeccable. Would Secretary Lowell invite us into the theater for a chat?"

"Of course, please, Secretary General Carter."

Brent Lowell gestured with a generous invitation.

Dirk Carter didn't hesitate either and marched into the theater's lobby confidently.

In the corner, there was a set of sofas.

After inviting everyone to sit down,

Brent Lowell quickly had his subordinates serve tea.

Once everything was ready,

Brent Lowell feigned ignorance and asked, "Secretary General Carter, may I ask you, what brings you here at this hour? If there's anything, our Majestic Peak Town will fully cooperate, and absolutely won't be slow about it."

Dirk Carter, with a faint smile,

did not answer his question directly.

Instead, he glanced around the lobby and said, "Secretary Lowell, this theater of yours in Majestic Peak Town is truly luxurious. I bet it's even more upscale than the Provincial City's Grand Theater…"

"Indeed, this Grand Theater is indeed the blood, sweat, and tears of the people of Majestic Peak Town. Seeking the Celestials at Majestic Peak is one of the county's biggest revenue projects, thus deserving of such scale."

Again, his words carried underlying meanings,

and there were no loopholes.

It seemed as though he was telling Dirk Carter, don't even think about making an issue out of the theater; every brick and tile here was earned by our Majestic Peak Town.

"So, Secretary Lowell, you really are a hero of Greshire County."

Dirk Carter complimented.

Brent Lowell laughed heartily again,

and said, "A hero I am not. Serving the people is what we do. As the leader of a place, we have to maintain our position. When I suddenly leave office one day, the people won't be gossiping behind my back."

These words were yet another hint to Dirk Carter that if he intended to take action, he'd need to see if the people of Majestic Peak Town would approve.

He had support from above,

and people holding him up below.

In such circumstances, if Dirk Carter wanted to make a move against him, he'd have to consider if he had the strength to do so.

A few probing words,

and the elegant Brent Lowell before him,

Dirk Carter saw through his game.

This was a deep, thoughtful individual.

To take him down, a "blitzkrieg" approach would be necessary.

If he proceeded step by step according to plan, pulling up weeds and all, the repercussions would be endless.

Once he solidified this thought,

Dirk Carter adjusted himself,

took a deep breath, and said, "Alright, Secretary Lowell, our small talk is over. Let's get to business. I came here for just one thing. Our supervisory team received some reports about you, so we'd like to invite you to come back with us to the base and clarify some issues. Given Secretary Lowell's high awareness, I believe you will cooperate, won't you?"

"Cooperate! Of course, I will cooperate! It's my duty, but… tonight is impossible. How about tomorrow morning? I'll report to the discipline inspection base myself in the morning!"

Brent Lowell showed not the slightest hint of panic.

His demeanor was relaxed,

unlike how an official who heard he was being reported would typically react.

In other words, he did not feel any threat from Dirk Carter's raid.

"Brent Lowell, the Discipline Inspection Commission is asking you to come with us now, not negotiating with you."

Heath Woods could no longer contain himself,

and sharply warned.

The smile on Brent Lowell's face,

disappeared instantly.

He glanced sideways at Heath Woods, and asked, "Who are you?"

"I'm the deputy head of the supervisory group."

Heath Woods said earnestly.

Brent Lowell nodded,

and said, "Deputy head, are you saying that the Discipline Inspection Commission wants to arrest me directly, or impose shuanggui on me directly?"

"So what if we do?"

Heath Woods retorted.

Brent Lowell's expression hardened.

In a cold voice, he said, "Alright, fine, but as a national people's congress representative, don't you need the approval of the NPC Standing Committee to arrest me? Bring me the approved order, and I'll go with you."

"You…"

Heath Woods was at a loss for words.

Seeing this,

a contemptuous smile appeared on Brent Lowell's face.

He said, "Since there's no due process, I can choose to cooperate or refuse. So, speak with respect. I'm no pushover."

With these words,

the atmosphere on the scene became serious instantly.

The first round of confrontation,

was evidently won by Brent Lowell.

Dirk Carter suddenly burst into laughter.

He said, "Secretary Lowell, you're taking this too seriously. My subordinate has a quick temper, please understand. May I ask, was there something significant that needed your attention tonight? Or is it simply that you didn't want to come today, preferring to deal with the aftermath first?"

The words "deal with the aftermath"

were Dirk Carter's reminder to Brent Lowell.

Yet Brent Lowell was as calm as ever, smiled, and said, "Secretary General Carter, you exaggerate. There's no aftermath to deal with; it's just that two guests came by today. I have to entertain my guests properly before leaving, right? It's just basic hospitality."
