Chapter 39: Chapter 39: He Doesn’t Matter?

"I promised her I would return safely, but I ended up getting hurt." Lu Feng pointed to his wound, though he wasn’t sure if Fu Xiaoxiao was angry because of that.

"Did Mr. Lu apologize?" Lu Chen stared at Lu Feng and asked.

"...I haven’t had time yet." Lu Feng answered truthfully.

He thought about it all night, and all he could come up with was to sincerely apologize and ask for her forgiveness.

"Now we’re doomed." Lu Chen slumped to the ground, feeling defeated.

"Is she really good to you all?" Lu Feng noticed the deep affection Lu Chen and Lu Lin had for Fu Xiaoxiao in such a short time and felt a bit curious.

Forget about Lu Chen, that child is naturally lively and cheerful.

But Lu Lin...

Lu Feng glanced at the silent Lu Lin to the side, he was like another version of himself, never easily allowing anyone close.

A hedgehog covered in spikes actually got softened by Fu Xiaoxiao?

When he adopted them, it took a long time to get Lu Lin to accept him and call him Mr. Lu.

Fu Xiaoxiao had only been here for a few days, and he’s already anguished over making Fu Xiaoxiao angry?

Even when Aunt Li got so angry, he never reacted so strongly.

"She went to the supply and marketing cooperative to buy new towels and toothpaste for Xiao Chen and me." Lu Lin exchanged a glance with Lu Feng and lowered his head.

Lu Feng was stunned.

Indeed... it’s a crime deserving death.

Even he felt like he deserved death upon hearing that.

"Aunt Fu even taught us how to climb trees; when we were drying herbs, she didn’t scold us but helped us organize them instead, and every day she cooked delicious food for us..." Lu Chen rambled about all the things Fu Xiaoxiao had done with them in just a few short days, even making Stone’s mother, who originally disliked them, willing to let Stone play with them.

"Dad, do you honestly not know how to cheer up Aunt Fu? Aren’t you her man?" Lu Chen pouted and gave Lu Feng an unhappy look.

He’s an adult, how does he not know how to comfort someone?

"...I haven’t learned it!" Lu Feng sighed. "Later, we’ll sincerely apologize to her; if she’s willing to forgive us, we’ll treat her even better in the future and not upset her again."

"Okay." Lu Lin and Lu Chen nodded.

"What if she doesn’t forgive us?" Lu Chen suddenly asked.

"..." Lu Lin and Lu Feng glared at Lu Chen.

Why haven’t they noticed before that this little rascal talks so much?

Fu Xiaoxiao carried the dishes to the communal water basin, currently washing them, when someone gently tapped her shoulder.

"Xiao Fu."

"Sister-in-law Liu."

Fu Xiaoxiao turned to see Sister-in-law Liu also holding a lunchbox.

"Are you here to deliver food to Camp Commander Lu?" Sister-in-law Liu seemed delighted, unlike her distraught appearance from yesterday.

"Yes." Fu Xiaoxiao nodded with a smile. "Sister-in-law looks in good spirits."

"You can tell? My husband made quite an achievement this time; they say he might get promoted!" Sister-in-law Liu excitedly whispered to Fu Xiaoxiao with hardly contained joy.

"Well then, congratulations!" Fu Xiaoxiao smiled and congratulated her.

The army is like a well-placed radish, so if Sister-in-law Liu’s husband is moving up, someone above him would have to be replaced. But the person above him is none other than Lu Feng?

Recalling Liu Hongjun’s late-night visit yesterday, Fu Xiaoxiao suspected Lu Feng might be getting a move too?

"My husband mentioned that your guy might also be getting a move." Sister-in-law Liu gently patted Fu Xiaoxiao’s hand, warmly added, "Let’s keep in touch more often."

Fu Xiaoxiao smiled slightly. "I haven’t heard anything for certain yet, but Sister-in-law, we’re neighbors, always just a door away; it can’t get any closer than that."

"Absolutely, absolutely." Sister-in-law Liu laughed heartily. "I’ll head back now. Drop by our place when you have some time!"

"Okay." Fu Xiaoxiao waved to Sister-in-law Liu.

After seeing Sister-in-law Liu off, Fu Xiaoxiao returned to the hospital room with the washed dishes, only to find the father and sons with furrowed brows.

What happened?

"Aunt Fu, you’re back!" Lu Chen was the first to notice Fu Xiaoxiao, rushing towards her excitedly.

"Yes." Fu Xiaoxiao nodded. "Time to go back; Lu Lin has to attend class."

Fu Xiaoxiao’s tone was flat, lacking any waves of emotion, and Lu Feng felt a chill behind him. He glanced at Lu Lin and Lu Chen.

The two boys immediately stood either side of Lu Feng, and all three formally apologized to Fu Xiaoxiao.

"I’m sorry."

Fu Xiaoxiao paused for a moment; it seemed hard to reject such a formal apology!

"Aunt Fu, I’m sorry, I’ll never upset you again in the future. I’ll obediently listen; please don’t be angry." Lu Lin looked at Fu Xiaoxiao, his eyes full of remorse.

He genuinely realized his mistake.

After she walked two hours in the hard conditions just to buy things for them, he knew he was wrong.

He simply didn’t know how to start apologizing.

"Aunt Fu, we truly know we were wrong; please stop being angry with us, okay? I like the old you, not the cold version of you." Lu Chen hugged Fu Xiaoxiao’s leg, playing up to her.

"Really know you’re wrong?" Fu Xiaoxiao looked at them, her anger fading.

"Yes, we know, we know. We will definitely not repeat it; you’re the best. Xiao Chen loves you the most and most and most." As soon as Fu Xiaoxiao flashed a smile, Lu Chen immediately clung on, eagerly reaching for a hug.

"You’re such a rascal." Fu Xiaoxiao lifted him up and pinched his little cheek.

"Hehe." Lu Chen was overjoyed, snuggling in her embrace like a little puppy.

"And you, are you sure you understand where you were wrong?" Fu Xiaoxiao turned towards Lu Feng. He followed the apology; why say sorry?

"Uh...I don’t really know, but I can feel you’re not happy." Lu Feng didn’t dare lie, he genuinely didn’t know where he went wrong.

"Alright, I’ll forgive you then." Fu Xiaoxiao said casually.

Whoever he was—his financial backer—even the biggest mistake was no mistake.

Facing Fu Xiaoxiao’s easily forgiving attitude, Lu Feng had a strange feeling rising in his heart, as if... he wasn’t important to her.

"Rest well then; Lu Lin has to go back to school, can’t be late, I’ll bring Xiao Chen to see you later." Fu Xiaoxiao held Lu Chen’s hand and waved to Lu Lin, who took her lunchbox and willingly grasped Fu Xiaoxiao’s hand.

Fu Xiaoxiao, with one child in each hand, left the hospital.

Leaving Lu Feng alone, watching the joyful departure of the mother and sons left him somewhat in disarray.

Fu Xiaoxiao returned home with the two children, taking out the lunchbox prepared for Lu Lin earlier. "This is your lunch; at noon, if you can borrow some heat to warm it up, that’s great; if not, it can be eaten like this."

"Okay." Lu Lin nodded, cherishing Fu Xiaoxiao’s current smile.

"Lu Lin, are you done? Time to go to school!!" Outside, Li Lei and Li Sen’s voices echoed, waiting at the door for Lu Lin to head to school together.

"Coming!" Lu Lin hurriedly ran out with the lunchbox.
