Chapter 105: Song Hong’s New Man
Chapter 105: Chapter 105: Song Hong’s New Man
"The two kids are well-behaved, I haven’t done much." Fu Xiaoxiao shook her head. Essentially, Lu Lin and Lu Chen are good children; she merely gave them respect and did what she should.
Hearing Fu Xiaoxiao’s words, Grandma Liu’s smile deepened, and she nodded contentedly.
She turned her gaze to Lu Feng beside Fu Xiaoxiao, gave him a once-over. "You’re the one who adopted the two children, hmph."
Grandma Liu looked at Lu Feng with a hint of resentment in her eyes.
He adopted the two children, which was a good deed, but because of this, Old Bai lost his mind. And when Old Bai passed away, they all wanted Lu Lin and Lu Chen to return to say goodbye to him.
But since no one besides Old Bai knew Lu Feng’s information, the two children could not attend the final farewell.
"Follow me! I’ll take you there."
Lu Feng was taken aback, not understanding how he had upset her.
Fu Xiaoxiao patted Lu Feng, having an inkling of the reason.
Fu Xiaoxiao returned to the military vehicle beside Chen Xiu to explain. "Sister Chen Xiu, we need to go pay respects to the deceased, could you wait for us for a while longer?"
"I understand, I understand, you all go! I’ll stay here and watch the vehicle for you." Chen Xiu understood well and gestured for Fu Xiaoxiao and the others to go ahead; she would remain there to watch the car until they returned.
Fu Xiaoxiao and Lu Feng took the two children and followed Grandma Liu to buy items for the visit, following her all the way to the mountain outside the town.
Grandpa Bai’s grave was a newly erected one, with his name inscribed upon the tombstone.
——The Tomb of Bai Zhenzhong.
Grandma Liu laid out the offerings one by one and patted Grandpa Bai’s tombstone. "Old Bai, I’ve brought people to see you."
"Grandpa Bai, I’ve brought Xiao Lin and Xiao Chen to see you." Fu Xiaoxiao pulled Lu Lin and Lu Chen, letting the two children kneel before Grandpa Bai’s tombstone, bowing deeply three times.
Looking at Grandpa Bai’s tombstone, the tears of the two little ones flowed uncontrollably.
Such a good grandpa was now gone.
"Good children, Old Bai said having you around made him very happy. Thank you for being with him during his last days." Grandma Liu stepped forward and pulled the two kids up.
Fu Xiaoxiao and Lu Feng stepped forward to bow and pay respects.
"Grandpa Bai, rest assured! I promised you, I will take good care of the two children." Fu Xiaoxiao sincerely spoke to Grandpa Bai’s tombstone.
"Grandpa Bai, I will look after the two children," Lu Feng nodded towards Grandpa Bai, just as he promised when he took the children away.
A gentle breeze blew through, as if it was Grandpa Bai’s response.
Grandma Liu glanced at them, wiped the tears from the corner of her eyes, and sighed softly. "Old Bai, your wish is fulfilled, may your journey along the underworld road be smooth!"
On the return journey, everyone’s mood was a bit downhearted, especially Lu Lin and Lu Chen, who were cared for by Grandpa Bai. Grandpa Bai treated them like family; they felt the same way, and suddenly losing a loved one was hard for them to accept.
Fu Xiaoxiao gently hugged them in silent comfort.
After bidding farewell to Grandma Liu, Lu Feng resumed their journey, Chen Xiu seeing the two children so upset, felt uncomfortable herself.
"Don’t be sad, your Grandpa Bai surely wouldn’t want you to be this heartbroken because of him." Fu Xiaoxiao gently comforted.
"Mom, can we still visit Grandpa Bai in the future?" Lu Lin looked up at Fu Xiaoxiao.
"Of course!" Fu Xiaoxiao nodded affirmatively. "When you’re on break or whenever you feel like it, you can come visit him."
"...Mm." Lu Lin nestled in Fu Xiaoxiao’s embrace, gently murmuring. "I miss him."
Fu Xiaoxiao ruffled his hair, soothing him silently.
Lu Chen leaned against Fu Xiaoxiao, lulled by her comfort, eventually falling asleep.
"Don’t worry, kids! They will recover soon!" Chen Xiu spoke softly to Fu Xiaoxiao.
Fu Xiaoxiao gently stroked the children’s heads, nodding in response.
Lu Feng drove onto a small road, leading to the village where Lu Lin and Lu Chen’s mother remarried.
"Xiao Xiao, wake them up! We’re almost at the village where their mother remarried." Lu Feng said softly.
Fu Xiaoxiao nodded, gently shaking the children who slept leaning against her. "Xiao Lin, Xiao Chen, wake up, we’re almost there."
Lu Lin immediately sat up, while Lu Chen groggily sat up, a visible drool glistening at the corner of his mouth.
"Xiao Chen, wipe your drool." Lu Lin reminded quickly, sneaking a wipe on his own mouth.
Fu Xiaoxiao looked down, spotting a large puddle of drool on her skirt from Lu Chen.
She misjudged, forgetting that children drool in their sleep.
"Mom, I’m sorry." Lu Chen looked at his handiwork, pursing his lips, he had dirtied his mom’s new skirt.
"It’s alright, just wash it when we get home," Fu Xiaoxiao laughed.
Given his adorably dazed appearance, she forgave him.
"The road into the village is difficult to traverse, we might need to walk in." Lu Feng observed the village’s narrow path, cluttered with debris on the roadside, making it hard for the car to navigate, necessitating a stop at the village entrance.
"Then we’ll walk over! Do you know which family she remarried into?" Fu Xiaoxiao got off the vehicle with the two children, Chen Xiu also got off, curious about everything.
"I know." Lu Feng nodded, carrying things as he led the way.
Lu Lin and Lu Chen looked around, the unfamiliar village caught attention, as they appeared, villagers working in the fields all stopped what they were doing.
An elderly man slowly approached, carefully asking upon seeing Lu Feng in military attire. "I’m the village head, who are you looking for?"
"Hello, sir, we are looking for Zhang Dajun." Lu Feng glanced at the village head and stepped forward to speak.
"Oh, the Zhang family, I’ll take you to them!" Hearing they were looking for Zhang Dajun, the village head eyed them deeply, the inexplicable gaze made Fu Xiaoxiao frown.
This Zhang family, is there a problem?
Lu Feng led Fu Xiaoxiao and the others following the village head, weaving through the village’s paths, arriving at Zhang Dajun’s home.
Along the way, the village head neither inquired about nor expressed any curiosity about their purpose with Zhang Dajun.
Fu Xiaoxiao looked at Zhang Dajun’s house, unsure how to describe it.
The house was made of coarse adobe, weathered by years of wind and rain, the edges of the adobe eroded beyond recognition. The roof was thatched, the windows small with wooden frames; the wood had rotted, with places even showing holes.
Two wooden doors, with paint long peeled off, the hinges rusty, emitting a harsh "creak" when operated.
Lu Lin and Lu Chen immediately spotted Song Hong washing clothes in the yard.
About to call out to her, they saw a man inside the house call out to Song Hong, "Why are you still washing clothes, hurry and cook! My parents will be back soon, be quick, or they won’t have food to eat when they return."
