Chapter 103: Chapter 103: Grandpa Bai Is Gone

Except for those few, Chen Xiu hadn’t seen many with such poise. She should say none of them had Fu Xiaoxiao’s temperament, as those few always cast sidelong glances at people, and their aloof attitude was quite off-putting.

Fu Xiaoxiao would never harbor such thoughts; she got along with everyone and didn’t have any airs.

Fu Xiaoxiao smiled, feeling joyful.

"Sister Chen Xiu, are you ready?" Fu Xiaoxiao asked with a smile.

"Ready, ready, I’ve been ready for a long time. I got up excitedly at four already." Chen Xiu replied with a smile. She was so excited last night that she almost couldn’t sleep, but later forced herself to get some rest.

But by four in the morning, her eyes were open, while Li Si next door was still snoring away. Typically annoying snoring sounded pleasant today.

It showed just how happy she was.

"Everything is ready, so let’s set off!" Fu Xiaoxiao waved cheerfully, as Lu Lin and Lu Chen slung their bags and ran out happily.

Lu Feng personally drove the car, with Chen Xiu as well, which made the numbers perfect. Fu Xiaoxiao sat in the back accompanying the two children, allowing Chen Xiu to sit in the front passenger seat.

Chen Xiu boarded the car, curiously looking around with her eyes almost not enough to take it all in. "So this is a military vehicle! It really is..."

"Have you never ridden in one before?" Fu Xiaoxiao asked, observing Chen Xiu as if she was riding for the first time.

"Sure enough, it’s my first time. I’ve seen it many times before but never had the chance to ride in one. My husband never took me anywhere..." Chen Xiu pouted.

People are just different. Her husband never thought of taking her for a ride to experience it once.

Then look at Fu Xiaoxiao; she arrived in this car, and who knows how many times she’s ridden in it.

"Then enjoy this experience." Fu Xiaoxiao said with a smile, and Chen Xiu nodded. "All thanks to you."

"Counting on my husband, I’d never get to ride in one in my lifetime." Chen Xiu was full of disdain; her husband never considered her when there was something good.

Lu Feng slowly drove the car away from the camp, as Chen Xiu watched the camp fade further from her sight, eventually disappearing altogether.

Fu Xiaoxiao leaned her head out, only to be blown back by the whistling wind.

"It’s chilly now, don’t catch a cold." Lu Feng smiled as he glanced at Fu Xiaoxiao through the rearview mirror, advising her.

"...Oh." Fu Xiaoxiao obediently nodded.

There was nothing particularly said, but Fu Xiaoxiao just felt the car’s temperature rise.

As someone experienced, Chen Xiu sensed the emotions between the two, smiling knowingly.

It seems Mr. Lu and Fu Xiaoxiao have something good approaching. Even though they were already married, a marriage with feelings differs greatly from one without.

Previously, both were evidently restricted and unfamiliar, and Chen Xiu worried whether Fu Xiaoxiao could adapt — it seems she overthought.

Not only have the children accepted Fu Xiaoxiao, but even Lu Feng, who was always indifferent to female comrades, was charmed by her.

Lu Feng’s driving skills were excellent. Although there were many bumps on the ground, Lu Feng managed to deftly avoid them, keeping Fu Xiaoxiao from experiencing even the slightest jolt.

"Is this road really that smooth?" Even Chen Xiu doubted her memory as whenever she returned by bus, the ride was so shaky it made her doubt life itself.

For the first time, she felt it was possible to pass so smoothly, clearly seeing the car drive into the pits, right?

"Brother Wang Lu’s driving had me flying several times, but riding in my dad’s car, I wouldn’t." Lu Chen smiled at Fu Xiaoxiao.

"That’s his skill." Fu Xiaoxiao praised. 𝒻𝑟ℯℯ

Throughout the journey, they chatted and laughed, continually praising Lu Feng for his unparalleled driving skills. Several times they braced themselves for bumps, yet somehow smoothly passed by.

Finally, they arrived in town, where Lu Feng skillfully parked at Grandpa Bai’s doorstep.

"Grandpa Bai!" Lu Lin and Lu Chen joyfully jumped out of the car, bringing along the dried herbs they prepared for him.

After knocking on the door a few times, there was no response inside.

"Grandpa Bai, it’s Lu Lin. Xiao Chen and I have come to see you." Lu Lin knocked hard on the door and leaned against it, listening for any movements inside.

However, there was no response even after a long time.

"Dad? Is Grandpa Bai not at home?" Lu Chen looked at Lu Feng, feeling disappointed.

"Let me go check." Lu Feng scanned the surroundings and directly leveraged himself to vault over the fence into the yard.

Previously, Grandpa Bai’s yard was always sun-drying herbs, but now, the yard was empty, and it evidently hadn’t been tended to in a long time, with wild grass growing everywhere.

Lu Feng frowned and walked to the door to open it.

Lu Lin immediately ran inside, heading towards the rooms.

All the rooms were deserted, and Lu Lin hurriedly ran out. "Dad, I didn’t find Grandpa Bai anywhere. Where did he go?"

Lu Feng frowned. Fu Xiaoxiao looked at the neglected and overgrown yard and followed Lu Lin inside.

The bedding was tidied up, things were taken away, even the herbs were gone, and everything that couldn’t be moved was left in the house.

Fu Xiaoxiao was just about to leave when something on the ground caught her eye. She used her foot to nudge it, revealing a letter covered by dirt, which she picked up.

The letter was addressed — Lu Lin, Lu Chen, personally open.

Fu Xiaoxiao held the letter and walked out, waving at the anxious Lu Lin searching everywhere. "Xiao Lin, I found a letter Grandpa Bai left for you."

"Where?" Lu Lin immediately ran over and carefully received the letter from Fu Xiaoxiao’s hand.

Upon opening the letter, Lu Lin read it for a while, but there were many unfamiliar characters he didn’t understand, so he handed it back to Fu Xiaoxiao. "Mom, can you read it for me?"

"Xiao Lin, Xiao Chen, I am Grandpa Bai. I’m sorry to say goodbye in this manner. I know you would surely come to see me again. From now on, don’t come anymore; I have already left. I’ve enjoyed spending time with you two, this lonely old man. I’ve sold everything at home; you two are my only attachment in this world. I would love to watch you grow old, but unfortunately, I don’t have the time. I’m going to a faraway place."

"Under the broken pot in the yard, I’ve left money for you. Keep it safe for future brides. This old man! I’ve been quite unaccomplished in my life, with all family gone. In old age, meeting you two little ones made me glad. This is the last thing I can do for you. Your mom is a good person, and I feel reassured knowing you’re with her."

"Remember, don’t come looking for me again. I’m going to reunite with my family." After reading the final line, Fu Xiaoxiao exchanged a glance with Lu Feng, bowing her head to hide the moisture in her eyes.

"Grandpa Bai went to find his family?" Lu Chen didn’t understand the meaning, thinking Grandpa Bai went to find his family, feeling happy for him.

Lu Lin silently walked to the broken pot, pushed it aside, and found a bundle wrapped in cloth amidst the loose soil, taking it out.

"This is all of Grandpa Bai’s savings, a total of one thousand five hundred and sixty-three yuan, seven cents, and six pennies." Lu Lin handed the items to Fu Xiaoxiao, knowing exactly how much was in there.
