2K BASKETBALL SYSTEM
Chapter 323 - 323: Welcome To Hell
The loud, sharp sound of the alarm clock echoed in the dark bedroom.
Tristan Herrera opened his eyes immediately. He did not groan. He did not press the snooze button. The peaceful rest days were officially over. He sat up on the edge of his bed and stretched his strong arms. Deep inside his mind, the familiar blue light of the System interface turned on.
[System Status: Training Mode Activated.]
[Physical Readiness: 100%.]
[Objective: U-18 Asian Cup Preparation.]
Tristan smiled in the dark. He felt completely ready. He stood up and packed his heavy black duffel bag. He neatly folded his practice jerseys, his extra socks, his knee pads, and carefully placed his two favorite pairs of basketball shoes at the bottom.
He carried the heavy bag into the small kitchen. The lights were already on. His mother, Linda, was standing by the stove, cooking a large breakfast of fried rice, hotdogs, and eggs. His father, Armando, was sitting at the small wooden table, drinking a hot cup of black coffee.
"Good morning, son," Armando smiled proudly, pointing to a chair. "Sit down. You need to eat a lot. The van will be here to pick you up in thirty minutes."
"Good morning, Pa. Good morning, Ma," Tristan greeted them, kissing his mother's cheek before sitting down.
Linda placed a huge plate of food in front of him. Her eyes were a little bit sad, but her smile was warm. "We are going to miss you around the house, anak. Eat everything. I know the food at the training camp is healthy, but it does not taste like my cooking."
Tristan laughed softly and took a huge bite of the fried rice. "You are right about that, Ma. Nothing beats your food."
They ate breakfast together as a family. Armando gave him some last-minute advice.
"Listen to Coach Baldomero," Armando said seriously, putting his coffee cup down. "You are going to face the giants of China and Australia soon. They are much taller than you, Tristan. But remember what I always tell you. A tall tree falls hard if you chop it at the roots. Use your speed. Use your brain. Lead your team with pride."
"I will, Pa. I promise," Tristan nodded, feeling a surge of confidence.
At exactly 6:00 AM, they heard the loud honk of a car horn outside. The national team's service van had arrived.
Tristan stood up and grabbed his heavy duffel bag. He hugged his mother tightly. Linda patted his wide back, whispering a quick prayer for his safety and success. Then, he hugged his father. Armando gave him a strong, firm pat on the shoulder.
"Make us proud, son," Armando said.
"I always will," Tristan replied.
He walked out the front door, the cool morning air hitting his face. Before he entered the van, he pulled out his smartphone. He opened his messages and sent a quick text to Claire.
Tristan (6:05 AM): Good morning, beautiful artist. The van is here. I am departing for BGC now. I will make you proud. Have a great day today.
A few seconds later, his phone buzzed.
Claire (6:06 AM): Good morning, I am already awake. Go get them! Work hard today, but do not forget your promise to call me tonight. I love you! ❤️
Tristan smiled, feeling his heart warm up. He typed back a quick I love you too, locked his phone, and climbed into the large white van. The engine roared, and they drove away from his quiet hometown, heading straight to the heart of the city.
The van drove smoothly along the highway. After an hour and a half, they entered Bonifacio Global City, also known as BGC, in Taguig.
BGC was completely different from Dasmariñas. It was a modern, rich, and highly developed city. Tall, shiny glass skyscrapers touched the clouds. The streets were wide and perfectly clean. Expensive cars drove on the roads.
The van finally pulled up to a massive, modern building. The large silver letters on the wall read: TITAN PERFORMANCE CENTER.
This was the official training facility for the Philippine National Basketball teams. It was a world-class facility, equipped with the best hardwood courts, a modern weightlifting gym, cold plunge pools for muscle recovery, and a private dormitory for the players.
Tristan grabbed his bag and stepped out of the van.
"Tris!" a loud, energetic voice shouted from the entrance.
Tristan looked up and saw his two best friends waiting by the glass doors. Marco Gumaba was wearing a bright red hoodie, holding a cup of iced coffee. Next to him was Gab Lagman, looking as massive and solid as a concrete wall in his gray sweatpants.
"Marco. Gab," Tristan smiled, giving them both a special handshake and a quick bro-hug.
"Look at this place, bro," Marco said, his eyes wide as he pointed at the huge building. "This is not a high school gym anymore. This is the big leagues. I heard the beds inside the dorm have memory foam mattresses!"
"You are here to train, Marco, not to sleep," Gab said in his deep, serious voice, shaking his head.
They walked through the glass doors together. Inside, the facility was amazing. The air conditioning was perfectly cold. The walls were decorated with huge posters of past Philippine basketball legends.
They walked into the massive main locker room. It was huge, with wooden lockers perfectly arranged in a circle. Each locker had a player's name printed on a silver plate.
All of their teammates were already there.
Joco Palencia was sitting on a bench, tying his shoelaces. Josh and MJ were laughing at a joke on a phone screen. Emon and Jomo were stretching their legs on the soft carpet. Larson, Carlo, and Aekley were arguing about a popular basketball video game. Aiden, Ash, LA, and Jonas were organizing their practice gear into their lockers.
"The MVP is here!" Joco shouted, pointing at Tristan.
The whole room erupted in cheers and clapping. All fourteen players walked over and gave Tristan high-fives and hugs.
"Welcome back, Cap!"
"Ready to suffer, Tristan?"
"Let's go to war!"
Tristan smiled, looking around at the faces of his brothers. They had fought through the Southeast Asian qualifiers together. They had bled together. And now, all fifteen of them—Tristan, Marco, Gab, Joco, Josh, MJ, Emon, Jomo, Larson, Carlo, Aekley, Aiden, Ash, LA, and Jonas—were ready for the next level.
Suddenly, a loud, sharp whistle blew.
Fweeeeeet!
The locker room instantly went completely silent. The boys turned their heads toward the door.
Standing there was Coach Dante Baldomero. He was wearing his dark blue coaching polo shirt, holding a clipboard, and looking incredibly serious. Next to him were his three assistant coaches. There were no smiles on their faces. The celebration of their gold medal was officially over.
"Listen up," Coach Baldomero said, his voice echoing loudly in the quiet room. "You have exactly five minutes to put your practice jerseys on, wear your shoes, and step onto the court. If anyone is late by one second, the whole team will run suicides until somebody throws up. Move!"
The boys panicked. They scrambled to their lockers, quickly changing their clothes, tying their shoes as fast as they could. Tristan quickly threw on his dark blue practice jersey with the number 7 on the back. He laced up his white basketball shoes.
"Let's go, let's go!" Tristan shouted, clapping his hands to motivate his team. "Nobody is late!"
They ran out of the locker room and stepped onto the beautiful, shiny hardwood floor of the main court. The lights above were bright. The sound of their rubber shoes squeaking on the wood felt like home.
They lined up on the baseline, standing shoulder to shoulder. All fifteen players stood tall, breathing heavily from the rush.
Coach Baldomero walked to the center of the court. He looked at them with sharp, calculating eyes.
"Welcome to the Titan Performance Center," Baldomero started, crossing his arms. "I hope you enjoyed your rest. Because starting today, your lives belong to me."
He pointed to the banner hanging high on the wall. It was the logo of the U-18 Asian Cup.
"Southeast Asia was the appetizer," Baldomero continued, his voice low and dangerous. "The Asian Cup is the main course. We are no longer playing against Indonesia or Thailand. We are going to face China. We are going to face Australia, Japan, and Iran. Do you know what those teams have in common?"
No one answered. The gym was dead silent.
"Size," Baldomero said simply. "China has a starting center who is seven feet tall. Australia has point guards who are taller than Gab Lagman. They are bigger, they are faster, and they have been playing professional-level basketball since they were kids. If we play exactly the way we played in Thailand, they will destroy us."
Marco swallowed hard, his eyes wide.
"But we are not going to let them destroy us," Baldomero said, his voice rising with intensity. "We cannot grow taller in three weeks. So what must we do? We must become faster. We must become smarter. We must have the best stamina in the entire continent! We will out-run them, out-shoot them, and out-heart them!"
"Yes, Coach!" the whole team shouted in unison.
"Here is the training regimen," Baldomero explained, reading from his clipboard. "We train twice a day. Morning practice is purely conditioning, defense, and footwork. Afternoon practice is offensive tactics, shooting, and full-court scrimmages. Every night, we have a one-hour film study. You are not allowed to leave this building. No visitors. Your focus must be 100% on the goal."
Baldomero threw his clipboard to his assistant coach. He grabbed a basketball.
"Welcome to hell, boys. Baseline! We start with the 'Seventeen' drill!"
The players immediately turned and put their feet behind the baseline line.
The "Seventeen" drill was famous in basketball. A player had to run from sideline to sideline seventeen times in under one minute. It was a pure test of speed and heart.
Fweeeet! The whistle blew.
"Go! Go! Go!" the assistant coaches yelled, holding their stopwatches.
Tristan blasted off the line like a rocket. His blue interface flashed in his eyes.
[Engaging Physical Override. Optimizing breathing rhythm. Target pace: 55 seconds.]
He touched the far sideline line with his hand, turned sharply, and sprinted back. The sound of thirty rubber shoes squeaking violently filled the huge gym.
By the tenth sprint, lungs were burning. By the fourteenth sprint, legs felt like heavy concrete.
"Do not stop!" Tristan shouted, looking back at his teammates. Marco was slowing down, his face pale. Gab was sweating heavily, his massive size making the sprinting much harder.
"Come on, Marco! Push!" Tristan yelled, tapping his friend's back as they ran past each other.
Tristan finished his seventeenth sprint in exactly 54 seconds. He put his hands on his knees, taking deep breaths. One by one, his teammates crossed the line. Some of them collapsed onto the wooden floor, gasping for air.
"Stand up!" Baldomero shouted instantly. "Do not lay down on my court! Walk it off! Water break is in ten minutes. Now, get into defensive stances! We are doing the Shell Drill!"
The next two hours were brutal. They did not touch the basketball for offense. They only practiced defense.
The assistant coaches placed four offensive players on the three-point line. The defense had to practice their rotations.
"Close out!" Coach Baldomero screamed.
Tristan sprinted from the paint toward Joco, who was holding the ball on the wing. Tristan chopped his steps—taking quick, short, stuttering steps to slow down his momentum. He put one hand high in the air to block the shot, and kept his other hand low to stop the pass.
"Fly to the shooter, but do not jump!" the coach yelled. "If you jump, the Australian guards will easily fake you and drive to the basket! Stay on the ground! Move your feet!"
"Ball, ball, ball!" Tristan shouted loudly, communicating to his teammates that he was defending the man with the ball.
Joco quickly passed the ball to Josh in the corner.
Instantly, Tristan jumped backward, dropping into a helping position, while Gab sprinted to close out on Josh.
"Help! I got help!" Tristan shouted, pointing at the paint, making sure Gab knew his back was covered.
They did this defensive rotation drill for a full hour. Their legs burned from staying in a low, squatting position. Their throats were dry from shouting loudly. Baldomero was teaching them how to play as a single, connected unit. Against giant teams, one defensive mistake would result in an easy dunk. They had to move together like a synchronized machine.
Finally, in the afternoon session, they were allowed to play a 5-on-5 full-court scrimmage.
The blue System interface in Tristan's mind fully awakened.
[Analysis Mode: Active.]
[Scanning court geometry. Calculating passing angles.]
Tristan had the ball at the top of the three-point line. He was guarded by Joco. Gab came up to set a heavy screen on Joco's right side.
[Pick-and-Roll recognized. Defender Joco is fighting over the screen. Defender center is dropping deep into the paint.]
Tristan used his incredible basketball IQ. He dribbled quickly to the right, using Gab's solid screen. Joco was trapped behind Gab's massive body. The opposing center stepped forward to block Tristan's path.
Most point guards would panic or force a bad shot. But the Architect saw the future.
Tristan looked directly at the basket, his eyes wide. He raised his arm, completely faking a jump shot. The opposing center immediately jumped into the air to block him.
As soon as the center left his feet, Tristan smiled. He didn't shoot. Instead, with a flick of his wrist, he threw a fast, sharp bounce pass right between the jumping center's legs.
Gab Lagman, who had rolled perfectly to the basket after setting the screen, caught the bounce pass in perfect stride. He took one heavy step, jumped up, and slammed the ball into the rim with a loud, vicious dunk.
BAM!
"Good pass, Cap!" Gab roared, hanging on the rim for a second before dropping down.
"That is what I want to see!" Coach Baldomero clapped his hands loudly on the sideline. "Smart basketball! Perfect execution, Tristan! If they are bigger than us, we use their size against them! Make them jump, and pass the ball! Keep going!"
The scrimmage was intense. Tristan hit a step-back three-pointer over Joco. Marco used his lightning speed to steal the ball from MJ and score a fast-break layup. Jomo and Larson fought aggressively for every single rebound.
They practiced with absolute fire. They were exhausted, sweating buckets, and their muscles were screaming in pain, but nobody complained. They all shared the same dream. They all wanted the Asian Cup.
By 7:00 PM, the final whistle blew.
The players walked off the court like zombies. Their jerseys were completely soaked in sweat. They dragged their feet toward the facility's cafeteria.
The cafeteria food was specially designed by a sports nutritionist. There were huge trays of grilled chicken breasts, thick cuts of steak, brown rice, sweet potatoes, and massive bowls of green salad.
Tristan, Marco, Gab, and Joco sat together at a round table. Their plates were piled high like mountains.
"I cannot feel my arms," Marco complained, using his fork very slowly to eat a piece of chicken. "I think Coach Baldomero actually wants to kill us."
"Protein," Gab said simply, aggressively eating his steak. "Eat the meat, Marco. Your muscles need to rebuild. Tomorrow is going to be worse."
"I am just happy I did not throw up during the suicides," Joco laughed tiredly, wiping sweat from his forehead. "But man... Tristan, you did not even look tired during the scrimmage. How do you process the game so fast?"
Tristan smiled, taking a drink of his cold water. "You just have to memorize their habits, Joco. I know when you are going to pass before you even decide to pass. It is all about studying the angles."
They ate dinner in comfortable, exhausted camaraderie. Despite the intense pain of the training, the bond between the fifteen players was growing stronger by the minute.
After dinner, the players went to their assigned dormitory rooms.
The rooms were clean, modern, and very comfortable. Tristan was assigned a room with his best friends, Marco and Gab. The room had three soft beds, a small television, and a large bathroom.
Gab immediately laid down on his bed and closed his eyes. Marco went into the bathroom to take a hot shower, singing a loud pop song.
Tristan sat on his bed. He opened his duffel bag and took out his phone. He looked at the clock. It was 9:00 PM.
He promised Claire he would call her every single night.
He walked out of the room, finding a quiet corner in the empty hallway of the dormitory so he wouldn't wake Gab up. He sat on the floor, leaning against the cold wall, and dialed her number.
She answered on the first ring.
"Hello?" Claire's soft, sweet voice came through the speaker. Hearing her voice felt like a cool breeze on a burning hot day.
"Hey," Tristan smiled softly, closing his tired eyes. "I kept my promise."
"Tristan!" Claire said happily. "You sound exhausted. Was the first day of training terrible?"
"It was brutal," Tristan admitted honestly, a small chuckle escaping his lips. "Coach Baldomero did not give us a single break. We ran until our lungs burned. My whole body is sore right now."
"Oh, you poor MVP," Claire teased gently. "Do you want me to mail you some ice packs?"
"Just hearing your voice is enough to help me recover," Tristan said smoothly.
"You are so cheesy," Claire laughed. Tristan could easily imagine her blushing in her room. "But I am glad you called. I have good news too. My parents were so proud of my grade that they bought me a beautiful wooden frame. We framed the 'Hope' painting today. It is hanging right in the middle of our living room."
"That is amazing," Tristan said, feeling a surge of pride for her. "The masterpiece is finally on display. You deserve it, Claire."
"Thank you, Tristan. And you are going to create your own masterpiece soon," she encouraged him softly. "Just keep pushing. I know the training is painful, but it is preparing you for the giants. You are the Architect. You can beat them."
They talked for another twenty minutes. They didn't talk about complex things. They just shared the small details of their day. For Tristan, this phone call was exactly what he needed. It grounded him. It reminded him that there was a beautiful life waiting for him outside the four walls of the basketball gym.
"I need to go to sleep now," Tristan finally said, letting out a long, heavy yawn. "We have another conditioning run at six o'clock tomorrow morning."
"Okay. Go sleep, Captain," Claire whispered softly. "I am proud of you. Goodnight, Tristan. I love you."
"I love you too, Claire. Goodnight."
Tristan ended the call. He stood up from the hallway floor and walked back into his dorm room. Marco was now fast asleep on his bed, snoring loudly. Gab was sleeping peacefully like a giant statue.
Tristan crawled into his own bed. He pulled the thick, soft blanket over his tired shoulders.
The first day of the Asian Cup training camp was over. It had been pure agony, but it was necessary. The road to the World Cup was long and difficult, but as Tristan Herrera closed his eyes and let the blue System interface enter rest mode, he knew one thing for sure.
He was absolutely ready for war.
