The first night in the compound passed in real sleep.

No one kept a full watch. Vale barred the door and then simply lay down near it with a blade within reach. The rest of us took the beds. The mattresses were firm and clean. The air carried no residual pressure and no sound of approaching boots. I slept harder than I had in months and woke only once to the feeling of Elizabeth's hand resting over the ordinary scar on my forearm, as if she still needed to confirm it was only skin.

Morning came with hot water and food that did not need to be rationed. We ate slowly. We checked wounds that were finally healing without interference. We spoke little. The silence inside the compound was still new enough that none of us wanted to break it too quickly.

The day passed in small repairs. Seraphina rewrapped Lydia's arm with proper bandages supplied by the city. Vale tested her shoulder through a full range of slow movements. Feng Lan sat near the outer wall for a long time, eyes on the shifting sea, saying nothing. Elizabeth and I went through the maps we had taken from the old outpost, marking the places Lady Sable's people might be willing to speak about.

When the second night settled over the Bone City the quiet began to change.

It started with Elizabeth.

She came to the room I had taken, closed the door, and stood there for a moment without speaking. The tension that had been buried under weeks of flight and fighting was visible in the way she held her shoulders and in the steady way she looked at me. She crossed the space between us, took my face in both hands, and kissed me with the kind of slow certainty that said she had been waiting for a door that could actually stay closed.

Clothes came away without hurry. We made it to the bed and stayed there, learning the shape of each other again without the need to listen for soldiers or residual pressure. Her body was warm and strong and finally allowed to want without calculation. I moved inside her with deep, steady strokes while she held my gaze and breathed my name like it was the only word left that mattered. When she came it was quiet and complete, her legs locking around me as if she could keep the moment from ending. I followed soon after, burying everything I had in her while the ordinary scar on my arm rested against the sheets, quiet and only mine.

We stayed joined for a long time afterward, foreheads touching, simply breathing.

Near midnight the door opened.

Vale stepped inside, closed it behind her, and looked at the two of us without surprise. She had never needed invitations for the things that already belonged to her. She stripped with the same practical efficiency she used for everything else and came to the bed. Elizabeth shifted to make space without a word. Vale kissed me once, hard, then kissed Elizabeth with the same intensity, as if the three of us had simply been waiting for the room to be safe enough.

She took me in her mouth while Elizabeth recovered against the pillows, watching with dark eyes. When Vale finally climbed over me and sank down, she did it with a low sound of pure relief. Elizabeth reached for her, hands moving over Vale's back and breasts while I thrust up into her. The three of us found a rhythm that was slower than the desperate encounters of the road and deeper because of it. Vale came first, shaking, forehead pressed to my shoulder. Elizabeth followed when I turned and took her again while Vale's fingers worked between them. I finished a second time buried in Elizabeth, with Vale's mouth on my neck and her hand joined with mine over Elizabeth's heart.

An hour later the door opened again.

Lydia entered quietly, her injured arm held close but her eyes clear. She had waited until she was certain the sounds from the room were invitation rather than private. Elizabeth held out a hand. Lydia took it and let herself be drawn onto the bed. We were careful of the arm. Everything else was open. She rode me with slow, focused movements while Elizabeth and Vale flanked her, mouths and hands offering support and pleasure in equal measure. When Lydia came she bit down on her own good wrist to stay quiet, body trembling through it. I held her hips and kept her there until the last of the shudders passed.

Seraphina and Feng Lan came together near the end of the night.

They had stayed in the outer room long enough to give the rest of us space, then reached the limit of their own restraint. Seraphina's silver eyes were dark with want. Feng Lan's expression carried the same clean hunger that had been locked away while the collected claim still lived inside her. They undressed without ceremony and joined the bed as if they had always been meant to fit there.

The six of us spent the remaining hours before dawn in one tangled, shifting arrangement of bodies. There was no residual claim driving it. No mark demanding to be fed. Only the long-delayed need to touch and be touched by the people who had survived everything with us. I moved from one to the next as they reached for me, sometimes with two of them at once, sometimes with all of them close enough that the distinction stopped mattering. Elizabeth stayed at the centre of it, guiding without controlling, making certain every woman was held and filled and wanted. Vale's strength, Lydia's careful intensity, Seraphina's precise hunger, and Feng Lan's newly unburdened need all wove together until the bed was a single slow storm of skin and breath and low sounds that never needed to become words.

I came more times than I tracked, sometimes inside them, sometimes across their skin while they kissed the release from each other. They came against my mouth, around my fingers, on my cock, and against one another's hands and thighs. The night stretched and folded until the first grey light began to press against the edges of the shutters.

Morning found us in a single heap of limbs and disordered sheets. The air in the room was warm and heavy with the smell of sex and clean sweat. No one moved to leave the bed immediately. Elizabeth's head rested on my chest. Vale's arm was thrown across both of us. Lydia's good hand was still loosely linked with Feng Lan's. Seraphina's leg was tangled with mine.

For the first time in months the exhaustion we felt was simple and earned.

Outside the compound the Bone City continued its quiet morning routines. The constructs of living bone walked their patrols. The shifting sea moved against the outer walls. Somewhere in the higher towers Lady Sable was already awake and waiting for the account she had been promised.

Inside the room we stayed where we were a little longer, six people who had finally been allowed a night that belonged only to them, and the ordinary scar on my arm lay quiet against Elizabeth's bare shoulder, nothing more than skin.
