Chapter 9: Xiao Ye’s Astonishment
Chapter 9: Chapter 9: Xiao Ye’s Astonishment
However, when he heard the next sentence, his face fell.
"After I make them, I’ll give some to you."
’Those are obviously my eggs. Why should she give them to Luan Ting?’
Too bad. Rushing out to snatch the eggs now would be a little embarrassing.
Xiao Ye thought for a moment. A strange smile touched the corners of his lips as he left the scene.
One of Xiao Ye’s superpowers was Shadowless Tracking.
When he activated this superpower, he could turn invisible. Therefore, Luan Ting and Su Luoluo had no idea Xiao Ye was hiding nearby, listening to their conversation. They certainly didn’t notice when he left.
Luan Ting listened and then calmly refused. "There’s no need."
With that, he took out some salt and handed it to her. "This is all I have. See if it’s enough."
He hadn’t taken salt from the kitchen; instead, he gave Su Luoluo the salt he carried with him.
On daily hunts, he sometimes couldn’t make it back for meals and would have to cook on the spot.
He was the one who cooked during hunts, so he always carried some salt with him. It wasn’t a lot, but it was enough for one meal.
Unlike hunted game or handcrafted items, salt couldn’t be obtained through one’s own labor.
It was sold by the nobles of the city-state. Obtaining it required trading a large amount of captured prey.
Su Luoluo knew that salt was a luxury in this primitive society. For Luan Ting to be willing to give her some was already incredibly generous.
Even though it only looked like about three spoonfuls.
The salt was held in a small pouch made of cleaned beast skin, which kept it dry.
The fact that he stored such a small amount in beast skin showed just how carefully Luan Ting protected it.
Su Luoluo took the salt pouch and nodded. "It’s enough. I’ll make you a fried egg."
The oil was still rendering on the stove, so after taking the salt pouch, Su Luoluo rushed over.
’I really hope the castor beans haven’t burned. If they do, the oil will be ruined.’
When Xiao Ye returned, he immediately fixed his gaze on the stove. He didn’t know what Su Luoluo was making, but seeing her go to so much trouble, he knew it had to be something useful.
’As long as I control this stove, she’ll have no choice but to hand over the eggs obediently.’
’But what on earth is she making?’
It smelled pretty good, actually. Xiao Ye couldn’t resist taking a few more sniffs.
When Su Luoluo rushed over, she saw Xiao Ye squatting in front of the stove. His eyes were fixed on it, as if he were sizing something up.
Su Luoluo held her breath, terrified that he might "accidentally" ruin the oil she had worked so painstakingly to render.
She could only slow her steps and walk forward, forcing a smile to her lips as she said, "What are you doing here?"
Hearing the nervousness in Su Luoluo’s voice, Xiao Ye raised an eyebrow and held out his hand. "If you want this thing to remain in one piece, hand over the duck eggs!"
’How could I just hand over the eggs I worked so hard to get?’
Su Luoluo played dumb, looking at Xiao Ye. "Eggs? What eggs?"
Xiao Ye crossed his arms and shot her a sidelong glance, a smirk playing on his lips. "Need a reminder? You took six eggs from the reed patch."
’How does he know there were six eggs in the reed patch?’
’Could he have been following me?’
Seeing the suspicion in her eyes, Xiao Ye scoffed. "I’m not that bored. I’d already spotted those eggs yesterday. I was planning to have them for breakfast, but who would’ve thought you’d come along and take them."
Su Luoluo was still a bit confused, but when she heard Xiao Ye claim the eggs were his, she burst out laughing. "Your eggs? You’ve got some nerve. Do they have your name written on them?"
"If you hadn’t interfered, those eggs would be mine. So how are they not mine?" Xiao Ye shot back, refusing to yield.
"Me, interfering? Out here in the wild, it’s all about who’s capable. First come, first served. Of course they’re mine. What’s this nonsense about them being your eggs?"
"You were first? If we’re talking first come, first served, I saw them yesterday."
Su Luoluo snorted with laughter at his words. "And what good did seeing them yesterday do? For all you know, I saw them the day before yesterday."
Seeing that Su Luoluo wasn’t giving in, Xiao Ye stopped wasting his breath. "Think whatever you want. If you want this stuff to remain intact, then give me back the eggs."
Su Luoluo had the upper hand, but when she saw Xiao Ye move to pour out the oil, her expression changed in an instant. She forced a smile and said, "Hey, let’s talk this over. No need to be so drastic."
Xiao Ye huffed. "There’s nothing to discuss. Hand over the eggs!"
"Two?" Su Luoluo tried to negotiate.
Xiao Ye snorted, "Six."
"Six? You won’t even leave me one?" Su Luoluo couldn’t believe it.
Of course, Xiao Ye wouldn’t budge, not even on a single egg. In his mind, they were rightfully his.
Such was the domineering nature of a snake.
Seeing that a direct confrontation wasn’t going to work, Su Luoluo’s eyes darted about as she conceded, "Alright, how about this? You don’t have to pour out the oil. I’ll make six fried eggs, and we can eat them together. How does that sound?"
"Fried eggs? Are they any good?"
Xiao Ye had just overheard the conversation between Su Luoluo and Luan Ting, so he had some understanding of what fried eggs were.
’He just didn’t know if they were actually any good. The critical point was, Su Luoluo was the one making them?’
Su Luoluo nodded. "Of course."
Seeing his skepticism, she patted her chest. "If you don’t believe me, I can make two for you to try first."
As she spoke, she took out the salt she’d gotten from Luan Ting. "I even have salt. With this added, there’s no way they’ll taste bad."
Xiao Ye had been hesitant, but seeing Su Luoluo pull out the salt, he was somewhat convinced.
’Salt was a precious commodity, after all. It could completely change the taste of food.’
He thought for a moment before reluctantly agreeing. "All right, then. But you can only make two."
Su Luoluo nodded. She walked to the stove, picked up another section of the bamboo she had just split, and went to the river to wash it.
She placed it on the stove and waited for the water inside to evaporate before she could add the oil.
The castor oil had been rendered well, appearing as a clear yellow liquid. She used a stick to push the black sediment to one side before pouring the oil into the dry section of bamboo.
When the fire heated the oil to a sizzle, she cracked a duck egg into a separate piece of bamboo. She added some salt, mixed it well, and then poured the mixture into her makeshift "pan."
As it cooked, the duck egg released a fragrant aroma. It turned a beautiful golden-yellow in the bamboo, looking absolutely delicious.
Xiao Ye watched, surprised. He never would have thought Su Luoluo knew how to cook eggs this way.
When the egg was fried golden-brown on both sides, Su Luoluo handed him a pair of sticks. "Go on, try it!"
Xiao Ye didn’t hesitate. He picked up a piece of the egg with the sticks, blew on it, and put it in his mouth.
The rich, eggy flavor spread through his mouth, and his eyes lit up. He couldn’t resist taking another bite.
Seeing that he was too preoccupied to pay her any mind, Su Luoluo quickly cracked the rest of the duck eggs into the bamboo section, added salt, mixed them, and poured the entire concoction into the hot oil.
By the time Xiao Ye reacted, Su Luoluo had already finished frying all the remaining duck eggs.
He reached with his sticks for more egg, but Su Luoluo swiftly scooped them all up and covered them with a piece of bamboo. "The two-egg portion is finished. These are all mine."
With that, she popped a piece of egg into her mouth.
Xiao Ye: "..."
