Chapter 93: Curb Your Curiosity
Chapter 93: Chapter 93: Curb Your Curiosity
As Captain Li spoke, he pictured Lin Jingjing—unflappable, always calm and collected in a crisis. He knew she was a natural-born commander.
She could make the right call even in the worst-case scenarios. And not only that, she was powerful, a fast learner, and sharp-tongued.
If she couldn’t out-argue someone, she could just beat them into submission.
The position of head of the logistics department was honestly a waste of her talents.
Seeing Captain Li so certain, Beisang chuckled. She held out her hand, and he gave her a cigarette, which she then lit and started to smoke.
She took a deep drag and then asked, "You have that much faith in her?"
"Yes. And not just her. I have faith in all five of them," Captain Li said with a chuckle.
Watching the two of them standing outside the kitchen entrance smoking, the group exchanged glances.
’Did something terrible happen?’
"Chief Bei, Captain Li!" Lin Jingjing waved at them, her face beaming.
Hearing the voice, the two looked up and saw the five of them approaching.
Beisang raised a hand, extinguished the cigarette in her mouth, and tossed it into a nearby trash can. Captain Li didn’t.
"Here so early?" Captain Li asked, looking at them. "It’s only four o’clock."
"We’re here to earn money," Lin Jingjing replied.
Hearing this, the two of them understood. Several chiefs still at the First Corps headquarters had them cook for them every day.
And since the group was short on Star Coins, they had accepted the job.
"So early? Do they eat this early?" Beisang asked.
"No, we prepare it in advance, keep it warm, and deliver it on time," Feng He said, shaking her head.
She looked at Beisang, wanting to check her pulse but not daring to ask.
Mo Xuan, standing beside her, saw her hesitation. He knew she was too embarrassed to ask. ’Fine, I’ll do it then.’
Mo Xuan stepped forward, his gaze fixed on Beisang. "Chief Bei," he said, "have you fully recovered?"
Beisang’s eyes shifted to him, her brow furrowing. "Why are you asking about this?"
’That great battle was so long ago. Why bring it up now? What are they really after?’
In that moment, Beisang grew suspicious of them.
Feng He jumped in, explaining with a nervous chuckle, "We know spiritual power exhaustion is hard to recover from, so we just wanted to know if you’ve recovered."
’So they’re concerned about me,’ Beisang thought, but her sharp gaze swept over the two of them.
She was trying to discern their true intentions, but she found none.
Feng He looked earnest, while Mo Xuan stood there with a deadpan expression, revealing no ulterior motives.
The other three, watching this unfold, quickly tried to smooth things over. "It’s because Feng He has been studying medicine with An Ni recently. She just wanted to know if you’ve made a full recovery."
"After all, you ended up like this because you saved Sister Lin."
Lin Jingjing looked at Beisang. Although the chief’s expression hadn’t changed, Lin Jingjing could see the doubt rising in her eyes.
’Chief Bei suspects our motives.’
Captain Li tossed his finished cigarette butt into the trash can. He looked at them, his face stern. "Why are you asking about all this? Get to work, now!"
"Don’t you want to earn your Star Coins?"
Captain Li continued, looking at them with disdain. "All day long, it’s just questions, questions, questions. Is Chief Bei’s health any of your business to be asking about?"
"Doing the job you have in front of you is what you should be focused on right now."
"Get inside," Captain Li said, stepping aside and pointing toward the kitchen.
The five of them finally went into the kitchen. The two stood at the entrance, watching them. Captain Li suddenly sighed. "They must have rocks for brains. And here I was just singing their praises."
Beisang didn’t respond. Her gaze rested on the group, her eyes narrowing slightly, full of scrutiny.
Captain Li might have sensed something, but he didn’t say anything more.
Inside the kitchen, Lin Jingjing stared at the two of them, her face a hard mask and her brows knitted tightly. "That was incredibly reckless of you."
"Being so direct will make Chief Bei suspect your motives."
"No matter how curious you are, you have to hold it in, understand?" Lin Jingjing warned sternly. Her severe gaze landed on Feng He, her voice turning icy. "Feng He, don’t let your curiosity get you killed."
"Do you understand?"
Feng He lowered her head like a child who had done something wrong. As Lin Jingjing scolded her, an expression of self-reproach appeared on her face.
"I’m sorry... I just really wanted to know," Feng He apologized. Mo Xuan, watching from the side, looked pained. He stepped forward, putting a protective arm around her shoulder. "Sister Lin," he said to Lin Jingjing, "she knows she was wrong."
Lin Jingjing’s gaze shifted to Mo Xuan, growing even colder. Her voice was utterly devoid of warmth. "I haven’t even gotten to you yet. She was afraid to ask, so you asked for her?"
"Are you tired of living an easy life?"
Hearing this, Mo Xuan also lowered his head in silence. They had both acted rashly and been in the wrong.
"Both of you, control your curiosity. If you want to die, I can help you with that," Lin Jingjing said before turning away to start her work.
Shi Feng and Gu Kaiwen, standing off to the side, were practically holding their breath. An angry Lin Jingjing was truly terrifying.
"Did you two lose your minds just now?" Shi Feng leaned in and whispered. "Asking something like that out of nowhere was so abrupt."
"I know we were wrong," Mo Xuan replied, rubbing the back of his head.
Gu Kaiwen watched Lin Jingjing’s back, patting his chest lightly. "That was so scary."
’The pressure she gives off is even more terrifying than before. We’d better not make Sister Lin angry again.’
Lin Jingjing was fuming. She knew Feng He was worried about the strange poison in Beisang’s body, but she never expected her to ask so directly.
’Didn’t she notice the scrutiny and doubt in Chief Bei’s eyes just now?’
’If Chief Bei were a ruthless person, she would have them all slowly killed off.’
’She’s a chief; getting rid of a few people would be ridiculously easy for her.’
’Send them to the battlefield, pull a few strings, and let them die in the jaws of a mutant beast.’
’Like hell we’d survive!’
For a moment, the atmosphere in the kitchen became exceptionally strange.
Afraid that Lin Jingjing was still angry, everyone worked on their tasks in silence, keeping their mouths shut.
Once the chiefs’ meals were ready, Shi Feng was the first to speak up. "I’ll deliver it!"
With that, he grabbed the insulated containers and bolted from the kitchen. Gu Kaiwen watched him go, cursing himself for not speaking up faster.
’He didn’t want to stay in this strange atmosphere either!’
Lin Jingjing glanced at the time. It was 5:30. Giving them no chance to rest, she said, "Keep working."
The remaining three didn’t dare say a word and could only continue their work.
Back in her office, Beisang summoned her adjutant. Resting her head on her hand, she sat at her desk and said, "Go investigate those few from the logistics department. Find out what they’ve been up to recently."
"And remember, be detailed."
The female adjutant heard this and didn’t quite understand why the chief was doing this, but the chief had given an order, so she would follow it and investigate.
"Yes, ma’am!" she acknowledged before leaving the office.
