Chapter 69: You Did This
Chapter 69: Chapter 69: You Did This
’They aren’t related by blood, so why are they so close?’
’Is it because they’ve gone through life and death together?’
If they knew what Aidan was wondering, they would surely exchange a glance and tell him they were the closest thing to family in this world.
After all, in this world, they were the only five people who truly knew each other.
"All set," Feng He said, placing the last item in their basket. "Time to pay."
Hearing the word "pay," all eyes turned to Shi Feng.
Shi Feng touched his Star Ring, his expression pained. "I’ll go pay," he said.
The group followed Shi Feng. As they passed a cooler, their eyes all landed on a drink that cost only 3 Star Coins.
It was the cheapest drink in there. Mo Xuan reached out and tugged on Shi Feng’s sleeve. "Shi Feng, we want this..."
Shi Feng glanced at the price. 3 Star Coins. That was acceptable.
"Go ahead." He could still afford a few drinks.
After paying, they carried their bags and headed for the back mountain. On the way, Lin Jingjing asked, "Have the chickens arrived?"
"About ten more minutes," Aidan said.
Ten more minutes. They were almost here.
Mo Xuan asked from the side, "Do you need anyone to go with you to pick them up?"
"No need."
Since he didn’t need company, they decided to wait there for his return.
"You go on ahead, then. We’ll wait here for you," Feng He said to him with a smile, though it seemed somewhat distant. They were near the chicken coops, which they had to pass to get to the back mountain.
Aidan looked at them, then finally nodded.
The round trip to get the chickens was quick. The seller had even cleaned and prepared them, saving the group the trouble.
He paid the Star Coins and took the goods. With the transaction complete, Aidan headed back.
When he got back, he saw the group leaning over the entrance to a coop, holding chicken feed and occasionally scattering a handful inside.
The chickens inside were clucking away, sounding quite happy with their meal.
Lin Jingjing tossed the feed in handful by handful, muttering at a chicken that often pecked her. "Long time no see. You’ve gotten a lot fatter, huh? It’ll be time to slaughter the chickens in a few days. You’re so plump, if the robot picks you out, it’ll serve you right."
"That’s what you get for pecking me. My arm was black and blue for a while because of you."
"Being eaten by us is a blessing for you, you know. Eat up, get nice and fat."
"And don’t you complain. Your life as a chicken is already complete. You got to peck someone as awesome as me. You can die with no regrets."
Mo Xuan, who was next to her, couldn’t help but interrupt. "You know it can’t understand a word of that, right?" he reminded her.
Then he added the finishing blow: "Besides, your Spiritual Power Level has dropped to Grade F. You’re not so awesome anymore."
Lin Jingjing shot him a glare, then turned and yelled to Feng He, "Feng He, get your fiancé in line!"
The other three burst out laughing. "Hahaha."
"I’m back," Aidan announced.
All five of them turned their heads toward him in a flash. They scattered the last of the chicken feed into the coop. "Let’s go."
With that, they dutifully lined up to wash their hands.
After washing their hands, they headed for the back mountain.
The back mountain was covered in rocks of all sizes. They ended up choosing the same spot where they had conducted their last experiment.
Upon arriving, they were stunned to find the large boulder from before split in two, its halves lying on the ground. "Who did this? They’re so strong!" Shi Feng asked in amazement, reaching out to touch the stone.
’To split a boulder this big in two... their strength must be incredible.’
"Could someone else be doing experiments here?" Lin Jingjing asked in disbelief.
Mo Xuan said nothing. He went closer to inspect the rock and found a fist-shaped indentation at the center of the break. This was the same boulder Lin Jingjing had used for her experiment last time.
Back then, one punch had made her yelp in pain and jump back, the skin on her knuckles scraped and bleeding.
And sure enough, there were faint bloodstains on the rock. A theory suddenly formed in Mo Xuan’s mind.
’Could it be that Lin Jingjing was the one who broke this boulder in two?’
With this thought, his gaze shifted to the nearby Lin Jingjing, who was staring at the broken rock with an expression of pure envy.
Mo Xuan looked at Lin Jingjing and spoke up. "Sister Lin, I think you might be the one who did this."
"Huh? Me?" Lin Jingjing was incredulous. "How could I have done it? My Spiritual Power Level is down to Grade F."
"That one punch last time nearly killed me."
"It was you," Mo Xuan said firmly. He pointed to a specific spot. "There’s a fist print here, and it still has the bloodstains from last time."
Lin Jingjing wasn’t convinced, but she walked over for a closer look and saw that he was right.
’In other words, she had really been the one to split this huge boulder in two?’
The thought made Lin Jingjing wave her arms in excitement. "Does that mean I’ve gotten stronger?!"
"Does this mean I can protect you all now?"
At that moment, Feng He posed a question. "If Sister Lin got stronger, why did her Spiritual Power Level drop to Grade F?"
That was true. It didn’t make any sense.
Shouldn’t getting stronger make your level go up? This was the first time any of them had seen someone’s rank decrease.
"Maybe Sister Lin’s just a special case. The more awesome she gets, the lower her grade," Gu Kaiwen chimed in randomly.
"Could be," Shi Feng agreed. "Alright, enough chatter. Let’s get to it. Let’s try to be done by eight."
"Oh, and if you really can’t figure it out, just have Sister Lin punch something again."
Shi Feng’s words were a reminder. That was right—if she was the one who broke it, they could find out for sure by having her punch something else.
But when Lin Jingjing heard she’d have to punch something again, she recoiled in fear.
Lin Jingjing shrank back, chuckling nervously. "You know, how about we just forget it? I don’t really need to get any stronger."
"Nope." Feng He and Mo Xuan shook their heads in unison. "We have to test it."
"What about... painkillers...?" Lin Jingjing asked meekly.
"Don’t worry, I brought some," Feng He said.
Lin Jingjing glanced at her own hand. ’Alright, hand,’ she thought, ’you’d better not fail me now.’
With the plan settled, they got busy. Some started marinating the meat while others worked on the fire.
Aidan sat to the side, watching them bustle about. He wanted to help but realized there wasn’t a single task he knew how to do.
So, with nothing else to do, he sat there, occasionally trying to make conversation.
"You guys are amazing cooks. I stood in line for your food a few times, and I still remember how good it tasted."
"You cook so many dishes, though. Do you manage to keep up?"
Shi Feng was the first to answer. "Keep up? Not at all. You should have seen it—the sheer despair of seeing tray after tray of meat just waiting for us to cook."
"We’d finish one tray, and there’d be another right behind it."
’Looks like the logistics department isn’t as cushy as I thought.’ Seeing their practiced movements, he could tell they had done this countless times.
"We should make a dipping sauce later," Feng He said, glancing at the time. "We didn’t have long to marinate this, so it might not be flavorful enough on its own."
’If we’d started two hours earlier, it would have been perfect. The roasted chicken would have been incredibly fragrant.’
