Chapter 63: Very Hypocritical
Chapter 63: Chapter 63: Very Hypocritical
Aidan propped his head up with one hand, drumming his fingers on the tabletop with the other.
Lin Jingjing looked at him, unsure of what to say for a moment.
She didn’t dwell on it, simply picking up the snacks from the table and starting to eat.
’He paid for them anyway,’ she thought. ’It’d be a waste not to eat.’
Lin Jingjing grabbed a bag of snacks, tore it open, and popped one into her mouth. After a bite, she found it was quite good—crispy and especially fragrant.
Just then, the table behind them was occupied by a group of four: three men and one woman.
They looked at the food in front of them and immediately started complaining. "What the hell is the logistics department doing? Serving up this garbage and still charging us for it."
"We’d be better off not eating at all."
"Exactly. It’s disgusting."
Although they were complaining about how bad the food was, their hands, holding chopsticks, didn’t slow down one bit. In fact, they kept shoveling food into their mouths.
Complaining with their mouths, but their actions never stopped.
So hypocritical.
"Did you guys see the notice from Admiral He?" one of the men asked.
"Yeah, I saw. They’re giving several million to each of the families of the deceased again."
"So many people died, and the compensation is still that high. Does the First Corps even have any military funds left?"
"Several million Star Coins..." someone sighed. "They’re already dead. What are they going to do with so many Star Coins?"
"Can’t their family members just go earn Star Coins themselves?"
"They just have to keep leeching off the military funds. I’m starting to suspect these people died in the mouths of mutant beasts on purpose."
Once a doubt is spoken aloud, countless more follow. After enough questioning, even the truth can become a lie.
Because the people they were discussing had already returned their souls to the cosmos, lining up to be reincarnated.
"Getting so many Star Coins in one go... their families just got rich overnight."
Listening to their discussion, one comment after another, Aidan, who sat behind them, clenched his fists tightly.
Lin Jingjing, however, was used to it. This group sat in that spot every day, passing all sorts of judgment on the people of the First Corps.
In their mouths, the heroes who died for B6 Star couldn’t get a single good word. They looked down on soldiers who came back from the battlefield disabled, treating them as if they were in the way.
They felt the logistics department was a drain on military funds, that a department of only six people didn’t deserve to exist, and they ate the food they prepared with disdain.
Basically, they complained about everything under the sun. Anything that wasn’t to their advantage was met with contempt.
And it wasn’t just this group; there were several others like them.
"Doesn’t it make you angry, hearing that?" Aidan asked, looking at the calm, snack-eating Lin Jingjing.
Lin Jingjing shrugged. "Why should I be angry? You hear it enough, and you become immune."
"Or do you expect a Grade D piece of trash like me to go and offend them?"
"They’re all Grade A Spiritual Ability Users."
At this, Lin Jingjing couldn’t help but laugh. "Besides, those people have status and connections. Why would I bother getting angry about something like that?"
"I’m just a nobody."
Ever since she was beaten half to death by that blond punk, Lin Jingjing had seen things more clearly.
’Staying alive is what matters. Everything else can wait until I have the power to deal with it.’
Hearing Lin Jingjing’s words, Aidan fell silent for a moment before nodding. "You’re right. For a Grade D Mental Ability User like you, the most important thing is self-preservation."
The conversation behind them continued, and even the people at the next table over chimed in.
These people had never set foot on a battlefield, yet here they were, pointing fingers at the dead.
The image of what Aaron had done that day surfaced in Aidan’s mind.
How did Aaron die?
He was smashed to death by that Hammer Beast. But the reason he was smashed to death was that he saved five people all by himself.
One life for five.
Aaron used his battered Mecha to block the downward swing of the Hammer Beast’s hammer, holding it off for a full minute.
After the five people under the hammer were all moved to safety, Aaron tried to leave, but his Mecha was too damaged, and its energy was depleted.
In the end, with one blow from the Hammer Beast, the Mecha and the pilot inside were smashed into a pancake.
His blood sprayed everywhere, spattering onto the hammer itself.
If Aaron had been a little more selfish, if he hadn’t saved those five people, he wouldn’t have died.
His child was only five years old, and his wife was waiting for him to come home.
With Aaron gone, his family was shattered. The pillar supporting their home was gone.
It was only right for the military to compensate his family.
But in the mouths of these people, it became a deliberate death just for some Star Coins.
"Hahaha, they really are heartless."
"It’s easy to talk when the blade isn’t at your own throat."
After saying this, Aidan stood up. Lin Jingjing, who was eating snacks, paused and looked at him.
"Are you sure?" Lin Jingjing asked.
Aidan replied, "I’m sure."
"Go ahead," Lin Jingjing nodded.
Aidan turned, clenched his fist, walked over, and grabbed the collar of the man who had been speaking with the most self-righteous indignation.
Then he raised his fist and slammed it into the man’s face.
Lin Jingjing silently gathered the snacks on the table into her Space Ring. She’d share them with the others when she got back.
One punch wasn’t enough to vent his anger. Aidan slammed the man down on the dining table and continued to land punch after punch.
At the same time, he unleashed his spiritual power. The moment his S-Class spiritual power flared out, the man’s buddies, who had been about to jump in and help their friend, instantly froze up.
They were suppressed, completely unable to move from where they stood.
Aidan’s face was flushed with rage as he rained down blows. The man, pinned by the spiritual power and being beaten, didn’t even have a chance to beg for mercy.
He put his full force into every punch, his eyes filled with ferocity.
Lin Jingjing watched this scene from her seat, finally sighing as she stood up and walked over.
As she passed a red-haired man, she reached out, grabbed his hair, and dragged him over to Aidan’s side, throwing him down with a sharp tug.
"That one’s about to die. Switch to another."
Hearing Lin Jingjing’s words, Aidan looked up at her. He was a little surprised to find that she was unaffected by his spiritual power.
But he didn’t dwell on it. Right now, all he wanted was to beat these disgusting bastards to death.
"Fine." He let go, shoving the man in front of him away.
Aidan reached out, yanked up the red-haired man, raised his fist, and smashed it down again.
The people nearby noticed what was happening in the corner, but none of them intervened. They just watched coldly from the sidelines.
They weren’t about to offend an S-Class Spiritual Ability User.
Among the group suppressed by the spiritual power, one person managed to break free from the pressure. He immediately raised his fist and charged forward.
"Bitch, are you looking to die?!"
Lin Jingjing heard the voice and glanced up.
Then, Lin Jingjing unleashed her own spiritual power. The moment she did, the expression on everyone’s face in the entire cafeteria changed.
Some of the lower-level Spiritual Ability Users coughed up blood and passed out on the spot.
