Chapter 58: Hammer Beast

Chapter 58: Chapter 58: Hammer Beast

The rumbling beneath their feet grew louder, and they could clearly tell that whatever was emerging this time would be difficult to handle.

Everyone involuntarily swallowed hard.

All eyes were locked on the iron gate.

As everyone watched, several towering, ferocious mutant beasts appeared.

These mutant beasts were enormous, standing two and a half meters tall. Their limbs were corded with muscle, and each one brandished a large iron hammer.

They had savage faces, pitch-black skin, crimson eyes, and sharp fangs and claws.

Five of them appeared at once—a daunting number.

Feng He’s jaw dropped as he stared at the mutant beasts. "So big! Are they on steroids or something?"

The moment the five mutant beasts appeared, their already crimson eyes glowed an even deeper red.

With a roar, they raised their hammers and smashed everything in front of them.

The creatures didn’t distinguish between friend or foe. With each swing, many of the smaller mutant beasts were flattened into pulp.

And when one of their hammers struck the defensive shield, the outermost layer cracked instantly.

Everyone stared, wide-eyed. ’They’re that strong?!’

Seeing this, He Luanchuan knew none of them were a match for these creatures. He spun around and bellowed, "All personnel, on my command! Fall back!"

"Move!"

"Everyone fall back!"

At his command, the soldiers immediately turned and ran. They had all seen what these mutant beasts could do.

They knew they had no way to defeat them. Besides, they were still in an underground cavern; there was no room to deploy their Mechas.

All the soldiers retreated, leaving only the Single Pilot Mechas behind. Lin Jingjing turned to the other four people and said, "We should get going too."

"We can’t handle these things."

With that, she began to retreat with the others. He Luanchuan was the last to leave.

He glanced back at the last two layers of the shield, praying they would hold.

The people watching the surveillance monitors couldn’t help but laugh as they watched the soldiers scramble to escape.

"I thought the First Corps was supposed to be impressive. Turns out they’re just a bunch of cowards."

"They ran after just one look at my Hammer Beasts. If I let out something even stronger, would they piss their pants on the spot?"

"HAHAHA—"

"What a bunch of cowards."

They taunted and sneered, but their hands never stopped moving.

After backing up all the critical data, they began wiping the systems. Once that was done, everyone in the control room evacuated.

The test subjects were also loaded into Space Rings and taken away. The entire process took only half an hour.

As they fled, someone was heard complaining, "It’s a shame to abandon a perfectly good base like this."

"Well, whose fault was it for not keeping a better eye on those mutant beasts and letting them escape?" someone else chimed in.

"Didn’t they fill in the pit?"

"How did they find it?"

"Who knows?"

Once the final layer of the shield shattered, the mutant beasts charged forward. They were incredibly fast, catching up to the retreating soldiers in no time.

Lin Jingjing and He Luanchuan occasionally fired behind them to slow the creatures’ advance.

"This isn’t going to work," He Luanchuan said to the others.

As he spoke, he reached for his Space Ring and pulled out several small bombs.

He armed them one by one and tossed them behind him.

The bombs were small, but they packed a powerful punch.

The blast was powerful enough to collapse the earth above them. In Hong Fei Park, He Shian, who was waiting for his subordinates to emerge, heard the explosion.

He instantly pinpointed the source of the sound and took off running in that direction.

The collapsing earth buried many of the mutant beasts, blocking the path forward for the rest.

With their path blocked, they clawed their way up through the collapsed ground and emerged into Hong Fei Park.

"All units, on alert!" someone yelled. "Open fire!"

The surrounding soldiers received the order and immediately opened fire on the mutant beasts pouring out of the ground.

But the mutant beasts kept coming in a ceaseless tide, and the soldiers couldn’t let up for a second.

When a soldier’s weapon ran low on energy, another would immediately take their place. After several such rotations, the flow of mutant beasts finally stopped.

Just as everyone was breathing a silent sigh of relief, a furious roar sent their hearts leaping back into their throats.

"Stay sharp!" someone yelled.

Two enormous mutant beasts emerged from the crater. And just like the ones underground, each was carrying a large iron hammer.

They thought it was only two, but then three more clambered out after them.

It was their first time above ground. Taking in the strange new environment, they let out a deafening roar.

Then, they hefted their massive hammers and charged.

Although everyone was on high alert and began deploying their Mechas as the beasts charged, some fumbled in their haste, while others were simply frozen in fear.

Tears streamed down their faces as they watched one of the two-hundred-pound hammers about to come crashing down.

The soldiers already in their Mechas rushed to the rescue, screaming, "Get out of the way!"

"Are you trying to get killed?!"

Hearing their teammates’ shouts, the terrified soldiers snapped out of it and scrambled back.

But some soldiers weren’t so lucky. A single swing of a hammer reduced them to a pulp, their blood spraying everywhere.

The massive hammers were coated in the blood and gore of the dead. Not a single complete body remained.

The sight was a dagger to the heart for countless soldiers. The dead were their comrades—people they had trained with, eaten with, and slept alongside in the barracks.

To see them die right before their eyes while they could do nothing... it was more than many of the soldiers could bear.

Wails of anguish escaped their lips as they piloted their Mechas forward in a blind, grief-stricken charge.

By the time He Shian arrived, the scene that greeted him was horrific.

Blood was everywhere. The ground was littered with the wreckage of Mechas and filled with cries of agony.

Meanwhile, the mutant beasts stood amidst the chaos, letting out occasional roars of excitement.

"I’ll kill you!" Aidan screamed, completely unhinged. He had just watched his best friend get crushed by the hammer of the hulking mutant beast before him.

His friend’s Mecha was demolished, reduced to a pile of scrap metal.

His comrade’s death drove him to despair. Even fighting with all his might, he hadn’t been able to kill the beast.

Instead, his own Mecha was now covered in deep scratches.

He Shian immediately summoned his Mecha, jumped inside, and charged forward. Simultaneously, he used his spiritual power to manifest a barrage of bombs and blades, launching them at the mutant beast.

The explosions forced the mutant beast back several steps, and the countless blades plunged deep into its flesh.

Seizing the opportunity, He Shian piloted his Mecha forward. Wielding a massive blade, his Mecha swung and cleanly lopped off the beast’s arm.

"ROOOOAR—" The pain caused the mutant beast to let out a piercing shriek.

Its crimson eyes blazed. Fixing its gaze on He Shian’s Mecha, it let out a thunderous roar and charged, raising its remaining claw to strike.
