Chapter 53: Chapter 53: Human Research Lab

This door had a fingerprint lock, facial recognition lock, voice lock, retinal scanner, and a keypad lock.

But judging by the dust on the keypad, most people used facial recognition.

Lin Jingjing felt a surge of anxiety. ’Don’t tell me they all just used facial recognition for convenience and never touched the keypad.’

Hearing that one word, Shi Feng’s eagerness to learn completely vanished.

Pleased by the compliment, Lin Jingjing lifted her chin and chuckled. "Of course."

The four of them pushed the door open and entered. It was pitch-black inside; without their light orbs, they wouldn’t have been able to see a thing.

"Mutant Beast Laboratory, Mutant Beast Observation Room, Mutant Beast Hatching Room..."

As they walked down the corridor, Shi Feng read the plaques on the iron doors, which indicated what each room was for.

The laboratory was underground and poorly ventilated. The air inside was exceptionally foul and turbid, and the smell made Gu Kaiwen gag repeatedly.

Lin Jingjing’s fine brows furrowed slightly as she covered her nose, her face a mask of disgust.

Mo Xuan covered his nose and used the hem of his shirt to grab the doorknobs, trying to see if any of the doors were unlocked.

But he found that every single door was securely locked. The place was narrow, cramped, and stuffy. The air was stagnant, and sunlight could never reach it.

The group stopped in front of a battered door. Inside, the room was empty, and the cage had been smashed open, leaving a gaping hole.

Shi Feng pointed at the room in front of them and looked at the others. "So, does this mean the mutant beasts we saw today escaped from here?"

"It’s possible," Lin Jingjing nodded.

The four of them went inside and began to investigate carefully. Shi Feng even used his Star Ring to take a 360-degree panoramic scan.

He was afraid of missing any important clues.

The iron walls of the room were dented and uneven, spattered with blood.

This was why the stench lingered so persistently.

On the floor lay several collars that had been clawed and broken. The master of this laboratory had used them to restrain the mutant beasts.

Lin Jingjing walked over and crouched down to look at a collar on the floor. Though it was covered in blood, she could vaguely make out its original appearance.

She placed the collar into her Space Ring to take back for the researchers to study.

After they finished inspecting the room, they went out and continued forward.

"Human Research Lab..." After reading the sign, it finally dawned on Shi Feng. ’Holy shit, this is a room for experimenting on humans!’

"No way... Are they really that depraved?" Shi Feng gasped, taking two steps back and crouching behind Mo Xuan and Gu Kaiwen.

"Should we go in and take a look?" Mo Xuan asked, glancing at Lin Jingjing.

A human research lab... It was definitely worth investigating.

Lin Jingjing nodded and made a snap decision. "We’re going in."

This room’s door wasn’t like the main entrance. Lin Jingjing took out a hairpin and went up to work on the lock.

She leaned against the door, her ear pressed so close it was almost touching the surface. Her hands never stopped moving as she slowly twisted the hairpin inside the lock.

Behind her, the three men watched with nervous expressions. An unknown amount of time passed before they heard another soft CLICK.

The door was open. The three men breathed a simultaneous sigh of relief.

Shi Feng immediately launched into another round of flattery. "I never knew your lockpicking skills were so exquisite, Sister Lin! No lock stands a chance against you."

After speaking, he gave Lin Jingjing two thumbs up.

"You’re incredible, my dear Sister Lin! You’ll always be my goddess!"

Hearing Shi Feng’s praise, Lin Jingjing put away her hairpin, then grabbed him and began to vigorously ruffle his hair.

"Got a death wish, laying it on so thick?" Lin Jingjing retorted.

Shi Feng just giggled. The other two stood by and watched them, amusement in their eyes.

There was no sense of tension that should have followed the discovery of an earth-shattering secret, no fear of being caught and locked up, and no panic that the four of them could be killed.

Mo Xuan pushed the door open, and the scene inside gave him a huge shock.

The other three followed him in one by one, their eyes widening at the sight.

"This is disgusting," Shi Feng commented.

This laboratory was huge, even bigger than the one they had just seen.

Inside were several large cages, and locked within them were countless humans.

They sat on the floor, their faces numb and expressionless. Their clothes were filthy, and so were their bodies.

The room was filled with the stench of urine and other foul odors. There was absolutely no dignity here.

They were treated like animals, locked in cages where they were forced to eat, drink, and relieve themselves.

’What’s the difference between this and raising livestock?’

No! There was a difference.

The difference was that livestock could move around freely and were well-cared for. These people were not.

Besides these cages, the surrounding area was filled with countless jars and containers.

A closer look revealed they contained all sorts of organs. After inspecting the jars, Gu Kaiwen commented, "Utterly depraved."

When the people locked in the cages saw the four newcomers, they initially huddled together and trembled, afraid that they would be the next to die.

But after observing for a while, they saw that the group had no intention of harming them. The smarter ones realized this and immediately began to plead for help.

"Please, save me! I can’t die here," a young woman begged, reaching her hand out.

One person’s plea triggered another’s, and soon, one voice became a chorus of everyone begging.

The sound was so loud that Lin Jingjing feared it would attract the bad guys.

She quickly pressed a finger to her lips. "Shh! Be quiet."

"If you draw them here, none of us will get out."

Hearing this, everyone obediently fell silent.

They just wanted to get out. They didn’t want to spend another moment in this hellhole, tormented by constant fear.

Terrified that they would be next to die.

"You will rescue us, won’t you?" the same young woman asked in a hushed voice.

She was terribly thin, practically skin and bones, but her eyes were large and completely free of the numbness that afflicted the others, filled instead with a desperate yearning for escape.
