Chapter 21: Broken in Two
Chapter 21: Chapter 21: Broken in Two
Lin Jingjing was dejected. Seeing this, her friends rushed to console her. "It’s fine, it’s fine. So what if it’s Grade D? We used to beat everyone even without any spiritual power."
"Yeah, even now that we’re here, we’ll still be fine."
"You’re an amazing sniper. When the time comes, we’ll provide cover while you go for the headshots."
"No matter how strong they are, they’ll still end up as losers we’ve beaten!"
Lin Jingjing looked at them and opened her mouth as if to say something, but in the end, she held her tongue.
The Empire was a nation where the weak were prey for the strong, and one’s Spirit Level determined whether they would be bullied.
’I need a higher level,’ Lin Jingjing thought. ’I want to protect my friends.’
’Being trampled underfoot, on the brink of death and unable to fight back... once was more than enough.’
’They don’t need to go through that. I’ll handle it. After all, I’m the leader of this group.’
’How can a leader let her people get hurt?’
That was why she was so desperate to become stronger.
But contrary to her hopes, she hadn’t grown stronger. It had all been just an illusion.
"Let’s go." All the words Lin Jingjing wanted to say boiled down to that single phrase. "It’s getting late. We should head back and get some sleep. We have to wake up early tomorrow to feed the chickens."
The moment Shi Feng heard the words "feed the chickens," he freaked out. "AHHH, I DON’T WANT TO FEED THE CHICKENS!"
"Me neither," Feng He said, looking miserable.
The two who hadn’t experienced it yet asked, "Why?"
Seeing their clueless expressions, Feng He said gravely, "You’ll find out tomorrow."
The heavy atmosphere from a moment ago vanished without a trace, and the group left the cluster of boulders, talking and laughing.
After they left, the large boulder—estimated to be three meters high and over four meters long—suddenly split in two with a loud CRACK, its halves crashing to the ground.
Unfortunately, none of them saw it. After returning, they immediately grabbed their toiletries and went to shower.
After their showers, they collapsed into their beds and were out like a light.
In her sleep, the severe wound on Lin Jingjing’s hand slowly began to heal.
The alarm on the nightstand rang again and again, until finally, the two women reluctantly opened their eyes and crawled out from under the covers.
"It’s eight o’clock already?" Lin Jingjing glanced at her Star Ring. It was eight.
’Time flies.’ Her eyelids were heavy, and she desperately wanted to lie back down and sleep in.
A long-forgotten soreness crept back into her muscles, and Lin Jingjing winced as she got out of bed.
Feng He, who was combing her hair nearby, noticed and turned to ask, "What’s wrong?"
"I don’t know. My whole body is just sore," Lin Jingjing said, shaking her head.
She changed her clothes and ran a hand through her hair.
Since her hair was cut short to her ears, she didn’t fuss over it much.
If a comb was free, she’d use it. If Feng He was using it, she’d just finger-comb her hair a few times.
After they finished getting ready, the two of them went downstairs together, where the three men were already waiting.
"You two took forever to come down today," Shi Feng grumbled the moment he saw them.
Normally, by this time, they would have already finished breakfast and be on their way to feed the chickens.
Lin Jingjing scratched her head, also confused as to how she had slept through her alarm until eight o’clock.
Feng He found it strange, too. She was usually a late riser, but not *this* late.
Today, both she and Sister Lin had woken up at eight, and they were still incredibly sleepy.
"I don’t know what’s up today. I’m just so sleepy," Feng He replied with a yawn, just as Mo Xuan handed her breakfast.
Two buns and two eggs. The only difference today was that there was a drink!
It was even the brand she’d been craving!
Feng He took the breakfast, her eyes wide with surprise. "You guys actually have Star Coins!"
"Brother Gu bought it. His parents gave him all their assets before they died," Shi Feng chimed in. As Gu Kaiwen handed Lin Jingjing her portion, he added, "It wasn’t much, just five hundred Star Coins. Mo Xuan and I spent over three hundred, so now there’s only a little over a hundred left."
Lin Jingjing took it, twisted open the cap, and took a sip. The sweet and sour flavor was delicious.
Listening to their conversation, Lin Jingjing suddenly asked, "Then Mo Xuan didn’t have any money?"
Mo Xuan looked awkward. He scratched his head and said, "I didn’t have any. When I first got here, I was about to starve to death. Wen Kai was the one who saved me."
So, among the five of them, only Gu Kaiwen had money!
Broke!
Utterly broke!
The five of them couldn’t even scrape together five hundred Star Coins.
’To think, back in the day, they never had to worry about money.’
Now their pockets were cleaner than their freshly washed faces.
And on B6 Star, there were no channels for earning money, so they had no choice but to be poor.
Thankfully, as soldiers, their food and lodging were covered. At least they wouldn’t end up homeless, starving on the streets.
The five of them arrived at the chicken farm. Lin Jingjing and Feng He stood outside the entrance, wolfing down their breakfast as fast as they could.
After finishing their drinks, they pulled out face masks, put on hats, and got all their gear in order. When they were done, a bewildered Gu Kaiwen and Mo Xuan asked, "It’s just feeding chickens, isn’t it? Why are you two dressed like that?"
’They’re even wearing protective armor. Isn’t that a bit of an exaggeration?’
’Do the chickens bite or something?’
Hearing this, the other three immediately stepped aside from the door. "After you two, then."
So, the two men went inside. The moment the door closed, the others pressed their ears against it. A few seconds later, a flurry of frantic squawks and screams erupted from within.
"AHHHHH—"
"How are they so strong?!"
"AAAH, MY ARM! IT HURTS SO MUCH WHEN THEY PECK!"
"Why aren’t these clothes protecting me at all?!"
Soon, the two emerged, covered head to toe in chicken feathers. Mo Xuan’s once-pale face was now bleeding from a chicken scratch.
Feng He’s heart ached the moment she saw him.
"You’re bleeding! Is it going to scar?" Feng He asked, stepping closer.
"It’s nothing." Mo Xuan waved it off. "What’s a little scratch to a man?"
"But it’s on your face. It’ll ruin your handsome looks," Feng He pressed.
It was only then that Mo Xuan realized what she meant. ’My fiancée thinks I’ll be ugly if it scars!’
"I’ll put some ointment on it," Mo Xuan said at once.
"See why we hate feeding the chickens now?" Shi Feng asked.
The two nodded. Those chickens were vicious.
"What about the robots?" Gu Kaiwen didn’t want to go back in. His arm was killing him.
’Those chickens are savages. Why can’t the robots feed them?’
Shi Feng raised a hand and wagged his index finger. "Nuh-uh. You think Captain Li would ever let us use the robots?"
"He’s working us like beasts of burden!"
"Yeah, the robots are right over there!" Lin Jingjing was fuming, too, glaring at the robots standing idly in the shade.
"One day, I’m going to slaughter every last one of these chickens!" Lin Jingjing said maliciously before grabbing a nearby bucket and heading inside.
The others followed her in. The three veterans had fed the chickens enough times to know when they were about to peck or take flight.
They would dodge just as a chicken lunged to peck, or smack it back down when it tried to fly up.
The two newcomers could only watch. ’What else were they supposed to do?’
"Watch and learn. You’ll get pecked less that way," Shi Feng reminded them.
