Examination Hall Four, Konoha Ninja Academy

Looking at the question paper in front of him, Naruto was completely dumbfounded and held his head in panic, ‘This is bad, this is bad, this is bad… If I get zero points in the test, our team will fail! If Sasuke and Mika-chan fail because of me, they’ll never forgive me!’

He had no idea what to write on the answer sheets. Theoretical knowledge has never been his strong suit. Moreover, there are extremely weird questions like ‘Nature of Reality?’

Does reality also have a nature? What does it mean objective or independent of perception?

He doesn’t understand this complicated and weird stuff at all!

At this rate, he would definitely score zero points and zero points means fail!

Naruto screamed inwardly in panic, ‘What should I do…? What should I do?’

It wasn’t just Naruto who was in a panic, even Sasuke and Mika were panicked. They understood Naruto very well, therefore, both of them knew that Naruto wasn’t book-smart enough to be able to answer these questions that even they couldn’t confidently answer correctly. In fact, this is not such a big problem, since he still has the option of cheating–which is the purpose of this written exam–but the problem is, he is too dumb to be able to figure out the true purpose of the written exam, moreover, even if he does figure out the purpose, he doesn’t seem to have a method to effectively cheat at all!

In fact, Naruto does have a method to cheat, it’s just that he doesn’t know that he can use that method.

Time passed bit by bit, and Naruto became more and more sweaty. His body started to shake in fear.

At this time, Hinata–who was sitting on Naruto’s right side–pushed her answer sheet toward him so that he could copy the answers from her sheets.

Unlike others in the classroom, Hinata did not need to cheat, she was smart enough to answer all the theoretical questions. As for the philosophical question, moral question, and war strategy question, while she is not certain whether her answers can be considered optimal, she does understand that there is no fixed correct answer to these questions, and answered them as per her opinion, anyway, the passing criteria is a total team score, and she is confident in both of her squad mates, as such she is one of the very few people who were able to complete their exam on their own without having to rely on cheating.

After writing all her answers, Hinata tried to help out Naruto so that he could pass the exam too, “Naruto-kun… I’ll show you… my test.”

In the Canon, Naruto was initially suspicious of Hinata; and thought that she was trying to trick him. It’s not that he doubted Hinata, he knew that Hinata was not that kind of girl, but he doubted the reason she would show him the answers and considered the possibility of her squad mates coaxing her to trick him. But that did not happen here. Unlike Canon, Naruto, and Hinata here are also quite close, as such, he did not think that she was trying to trick him or was coaxed into doing so.

In fact, Naruto felt lucky that Hinata was sitting next to him and was willing to show him the answers. Happy, he bent forward and tried to take a closer look at the answers in her answer sheet. But suddenly, a Kunai passed by his face and was nailed on the Konoha Genin sitting diagonally behind him.

Naruto was stunned, ‘Crap!’

The Konoha Genin diagonally behind him stood up, and questioned in anger, “W-What was that for, Sensei?”

The Chūnin who threw the Kunai shrugged, “You made five mistakes… You fail!”

The Genin was stunned, “N-no way!”

The Chūnin then pointed at two more candidates sitting in the exam hall, and spoke, “You can go out of the examination hall along with your squad mates… It’s over for you guys.”

The Konoha Genin was still shaking in panic.

“Tch,” two other Konoha Genin pointed by the Chūnin stood up while clicking their tongue and made their way outside the classroom along with the first Genin.

That was the first elimination, and soon after more candidates along with their squad mates started getting eliminated for getting caught five times while cheating awkwardly.

Some tried to argue, but they were suppressed and thrown out of the examination hall.

Seeing candidates getting eliminated one after another, Naruto became more panicked.

“Naruto-kun… hurry up… look…” Hinata tried to calm him down and show her answers, and Naruto once again tried to copy, Whiish! but suddenly he felt the gaze of one of the proctors on him. He turned to look at the proctor and noticed the proctor looking at him with a reassuring smile. While the purpose of that smile was something else, Naruto misunderstood and assumed that the proctor was waiting for him to make a mistake to deduct points.

Fearing that he would end up creating trouble for Hinata too, Naruto smiled and shook his head, “Hinata-chan, you don’t get it, do you?”

With the corner of her eyes, Hinata glanced at Naruto in confusion, “What?”

With a reassuring grin, Naruto spoke, “An awesome ninja like me won’t cheat, believe it!”

“B-but…” muttered Hinata as she looked at Naruto’s answer sheet. So far, he hadn’t answered a single question. She feared that at this rate, he would end up failing the written test.

But Naruto smiled reassuringly. Then his expression turned serious, as he whispered, “Also, if something went wrong, you’d be in a tough spot for helping me cheat, right?”

Hinata’s cheeks turned red, “W-what?” It was clear Naruto was worried about her, and she couldn’t help but think to herself, ‘Naruto-kun…’ Feeling shy, she looked down at her desk and apologized, “I… I am sorry… I did something uncalled for.”

Naruto shook his head with a smile, “Nah, it’s okay…” internally, he was crying bitterly for talking big. He really needed Hinata’s help, but he did not want to create trouble for her either, so it couldn’t be helped.

While Naruto was crying internally, on the other side, Sasuke and Mika were feeling equally helpless, and trying to communicate with each other silently to find a way to pass answers to Naruto, ‘We have to do something…’

‘Can’t you use Genjutsu on Naruto-kun, just like you are using on me right now?’ asked Mika. If Sasuke uses a Genjutsu on Naruto, they would be able to relay the answers to him via Genjutsu.

Upon thinking over Mika’s suggestion, Sasuke shook his head, ‘I can try, but Genjutsu won’t work on him because of the presence of Nine-tails inside him. For some reason, every time I use Genjutsu on him, the Nine-tails always break him out of it immediately, so we have to think of some other method!’

Mika pondered for a moment, then suddenly had an idea, ‘I have a method that might work…’

‘Are you sure?’ asked Sasuke with a hopeful expression.

Mika nodded, ‘Yes…’

‘Alright then… leave the proctors to me…’ said Sasuke as the three tomoe in his eyes started to spin rapidly.

On the other side, Mika silently controlled her hair, elongating them and seamlessly guiding them to penetrate through the concrete beneath her desk. Once underground, her hair continued to elongate and traveled toward Naruto’s desk, and emerged from the ground directly beneath his feet. From there, Mika’s hair went into Naruto’s trousers and started to crawl through his skin as it traveled toward his upper body.

“Huh?” Sensing a peculiar sensation slithering through his legs towards his waist, Naruto’s entire body involuntarily shuddered. He suspected it to be a snake, and glanced downward only to realize that it was not a snake, but rather hair that was coming out of concrete, and Naruto recognized that hair color as well as this technique, ‘Mika-chan?’

Realizing that the hair creeping through his trousers belonged to Mika, Naruto did not exclaim and tried to act as normal as he could, even if it was starting to tickle, he resisted his laughter.

While he couldn’t understand what Mika was trying to do, he understood that she must have something on her mind and decided to trust her. Naruto’s lack of reaction made Mika sigh in relief, and she continued what she was doing. Soon, her hair strands converged around Naruto’s right hand and took the form of a glove.

The next thing Naruto knew was that his right hand was moving on its own without his conscious control and it began to write something on the answer sheets.

“!!!” The boy looked at his right hand in utter disbelief but quickly suppressed his emotions and bent a little forward as he focused all his attention on the answer sheets in order to appear natural.
