Chapter 120: …At Your Table
Chapter 120: ...At Your Table
ADRIEN’S POV
Orion chuckles, a low vibration in his chest. "Of course I know you do not want to die. Even if you wanted to, I would not let you."
I look at him, letting out a long, cold breath. "See? This is exactly how a relationship between an elite and a nobody goes. No matter what I want to do, you would never let me. It will always be what you want, how you want, and when you want."
My voice goes lower, losing its sharp edge. I lean back, resting the back of my head against the stone backrest of the bench, staring up at the empty black sky.
"I have seen enough to know how little power I have over myself in the face of someone like you," I say, the weight of seven years of running pressing on my chest. "I know how small, how less it can make a man feel."
Orion shifts beside me. He adopts the exact position I have taken, leaning his head back against the stone, looking up at the stars.
"Is that the reason why you thought, at that time, that sucking my dick was what I wanted?" he asks casually.
Normally, a question like that would make me flinch or pull away in anger. But sitting here in the freezing air, too tired to hold onto any pride, I just answer him calmly.
"Yes," I say. "That is exactly what I thought. Why else would you search for me for seven years? All we ever did before I left was kiss once in the janitor’s closet."
Orion turns his head on the stone, looking at me sideways. "Why would I want that from you? What exactly do you think this is, once again?"
I turn my head to face him, our eyes locking in the dark. "I am Adrien Dubois. My family hated me. I am basically an orphan. I have nothing to my name. No money, no title, no power. At this point, Orion, you should know exactly what I had to do to survive when I ran away."
A memory of Louise flashes in my head, her mocking voice threatening to tell Orion everything I had been forced to do on the streets just to eat.
A soft, bitter laugh escapes my lips.
"I have taken it so far up my ass that I am actually tired of people holding me down and fucking me," I say, my voice flat and even. "I have sucked so many dicks that I am tired of people forcing my mouth open and shoving themselves inside me."
What’s the use of hiding it anymore? He probably knew everything from the start.
"I was just a boy who ran away for reasons I am probably never going to be able to tell you for my own safety. And I have paid for that every day of my life for the seven years I have been away. So why exactly would you want whatever this is with a person like me?"
Orion does not look away. "Why exactly do you think you can’t tell me the reason why you ran away?"
"To be honest," I say softly, looking back up at the moon, "I think I do not remember that day clearly. Parts of my memories are missing."
It’s not a lie. There is a gap in my memory when I try to think about that night. Details are missing, swallowed by a thick fog I can’t think through.
"Besides," I add, turning back to him, "even if I told you, I know that would be the moment I die. You said it yourself back then. Those who betray you will die."
We stare at each other in total silence, our heads rested against the backrest of the bench, our faces inches apart in the quiet dark.
"Did you betray me, Adrien ?" Orion asks softly. "Did you choose to do that?"
I do not answer his question. I fire one right back at him. "What exactly is so important about this that you would keep me here, Orion? What exactly is it that you want from me?"
We reach an impasse. The air between us grows heavy with things we are not saying. We both know neither of us is going to break first.
Surprisingly, the first one to give is Orion.
He looks at me, his cold face softening just a bit. "When my head itches, I think of you."
I blink. "Am I supposed to be some kind of scalp scratcher?"
Orion chuckles. "It’s not like that. I did not mean it in that manner. When I was younger, the inside of my skull, at the base of my brain, used to itch a lot. Metaphorically, not physically. But it felt so physical that I wanted to jam my finger straight through my skull and scratch that place."
I muse to myself. So his madness has a physical form.
The look Orion gives me is so sharp it feels like he can hear what I am thinking. I give him a small, sarcastic smile and a faint shrug.
"During that time when my head itched the most," Orion says, his voice quiet, "there was a constant presence I felt, directing a very potent but still weak killing intent at me."
He turns his head fully toward me. "It was you, Adrien. You would follow me everywhere, so much that you became a permanent fixture in my head. That killing intent, that presence... that little duckling."
My mouth opens in horror. "Don’t tell me..."
Orion laughs. It’s a bright sound. "It is exactly as you think it is, duckling. You were the one who made yourself a permanent fixture in my mind. You were the one who made me notice you. You were the one who made me want you."
"I only followed you around because I hated you!" I say, waving my hand at him. "I wanted to see if I could ruin you! If I could ruin you, then I could ruin Louise! If I could ruin you, then I could ruin Alice, and my father! I was not trying to become something for you!"
Orion keeps laughing. "I know. That is what made it so fun. So I finally decided to pay you the same attention you were paying me, you little stalker."
I groan loudly, covering my face with both hands. I cannot believe I fucked myself over like this. Everything that happened to me was actually my own fault because I could not stop watching him when we were kids.
"I do not care about what you are talking about," Orion says, his tone shifting into something steady and heavy. "This whole elite and nobody thing. What I know is that you are Adrien, and that is what I want. I want that killing intent without any actual act of betrayal."
I laugh sardonically, dropping my hands from my face. "Well, you are late. I doubt I’ll ever have that anymore. It’s gone, Orion."
"Well, then I will have to take it like that," Orion says. "We will just start over."
I look at him in shock. "Are you actually all right in the head?"
We both stare at each other, pondering the absurdity of that question, knowing fully well that Orion is not all right in the head.
And then, we both start laughing.
It’s weird, and oddly freeing. It makes no sense to sit in the dark, laughing with Orion like this. But as the sound comes out of my chest, I feel something loosen inside me.
