Chapter 60: 60/The Anatomy of Selfishness

Chapter 60

Cedric’s Point of View

I didn’t back down. Instead, I approached him again, jealousy gnawing at my chest and setting my heart on a fire that wouldn’t be extinguished. I drew so close that my breath burned his face. "Did you really fuck Stephanie, Alex? Answer me!" I spoke in a voice trembling with the intensity of my emotion. "How did you allow yourself to touch her when you know for a certainty that she is the mother of my twins? How could you do it when she belonged to me long before you ever entered the picture?"

He averted his gaze coldly, as if my question were worthless. "Cedric, calm down and come to your senses," he replied in an icy tone that made the blood freeze in my veins. "These matters are strictly private and are none of your concern."

I let out a bitter laugh, full of mockery at my fate and his lethal coldness. I stepped closer until our chests touched; we were like two roosters in a fighting pit that would only end in blood. "I saw the white dress, brother," I said through gritted teeth. "I saw her wedding dress torn and cast upon the floor like the remains of a battlefield! Were you fucking her and enjoying her body while I was in the next room, being ripped apart by pain and oppression? Did her moans reach you while you were stealing what belongs to me?"

Alexander’s jaw tightened instantly, the muscles of his face twitching noticeably. I looked into the depths of his eyes and saw a mysterious glint a mixture of rage and a warning I had never seen in him before. "Cedric, listen to me closely," he said in a low voice, like the hiss of a snake. "You are my brother, and the remnant of sanity in my head is preventing me from committing a crime against you right now. Do not push me to the edge."

I tightened my grip until my knuckles cracked, and roared in a voice that shook the silence around us: "I am the one who will commit the most hideous crime against you if you don’t speak the truth! I will not leave this place until I know every detail that happened behind that closed door!"

A lump formed in my throat, and tears began to well in my eyes against my will not out of weakness, but from the sheer oppression and betrayal I felt from the person closest to me. "How could you do this to me, brother?" my voice faltered. "Didn’t I beg you to stay away from her? Didn’t I tell you clearly that I love her and that she is the air I breathe? How could you stab me in the back so cruelly?"

Alex exhaled with a heavy weariness, looking as though he were fed up with this dialogue. He tried to maneuver around me to return to his car and close this Chapter of the confrontation. "Cedric, what exactly do you want from me?" he said in a commanding tone. "Let me go now; this is neither the time nor the place for this talk."

I blocked his path with my body, which was as tense as a violin string about to snap. I looked at him with a final, non-negotiable gaze. "I want the whole truth," I said with a firmness that shook his being. "And you aren’t moving from here until you speak it!"

Alexander’s Point of View

Cedric stood before me like one possessed, his features haggard and his eyes gleaming with a manic spark. He was consumed by a lethal curiosity that ran through his veins like poison. He wanted to know no, he was begging to know if I had fucked Stephanie last night.

I felt an internal conflict tearing at me; he was my brother whom I loved despite everything, but seeing him speak of Stephanie with that possessive tone, as if she were a trophy of war, set my chest ablaze. Yet, a small part of me, hidden behind my anger, pitied all that pain and loss breaking his stature.

I exhaled hot air, trying to make my tone dry and devoid of emotion to end this absurdity. "Cedric, the truth will not change reality, and it doesn’t concern you in the slightest. Stephanie carries my name now; she is my wife before God and the law. You must strip the thought of her from your head entirely. Believe me, this is the best path for you, for her, and for me."

He exploded in my face with hysterical screaming, his entire body jerking as if he’d been struck by an electric shock. "What? Have you lost your mind? Do you think I can just forget her existence at the press of a button? Why are you asking me this? So the coast can be clear for you to have her simply and without annoyance?"

I fixed my gaze on his eyes with stony coldness. "You heard Stephanie’s response yourself this morning, didn’t you? she said clearly that she belongs to no one in this house not to you, and not to me."

Suddenly, and in a way I didn’t expect, his pride collapsed before my eyes. All his strong masks fell away, and his lower lip trembled as he spoke in a humiliating, pleading tone that tore my heart to shreds: "Alex... please, brother... don’t touch her. Don’t go near her. I swear to you, I can’t handle imagining you with her. I’ll die if that happens."

I took a step back, revolted by the state of weakness he had reached. "Cedric, wake up! Why are you speaking such humiliating nonsense?"

He lunged at me and grabbed my shoulders, shaking me violently. "I’ll do anything you ask! Anything! Just promise me you won’t touch her! She belongs to me; her soul and body are mine.

Treat her as if she were my wife, not yours. Stay away from her!"

I felt the veins in my temples throbbing with provocation. How could he think with such twisted logic? I shoved his hands off me. "Cedric, I’m leaving now. I can’t waste another minute listening to this delirium."

But he wasn’t finished. He gripped my arm with a painful strength. "Answer me first... did you fuck her? Tell me the truth!"

I went still and looked at him in disbelief. Was this all that occupied his mind? Were his instincts and possessiveness his only drivers? I thought of Stephanie, of how she had been my lover and how I was the first man to touch her, and despite my love for her, I had never reached this level of possessive madness.

"And if I had fucked her, what would happen, Cedric?" I asked, challenging his shaky resolve. "Would you draw your weapon and kill me? She is my wife now, and it is my legal right to do so whenever and however I want."
