Chapter 59/Shadows of Suspicion
Chapter 59: 59/Shadows of Suspicion
Chapter 59
Cedric’s Point of View
I stormed out of the room with heavy, turbulent strides; the ground felt like it was shaking beneath my feet from the sheer rage boiling in my chest. At the threshold, I found Alex standing there like an immovable dam, watching me with a calm, provocative gaze that only fanned the flames inside me.
I lifted my face toward him with a silent vow of vengeance, the veins in my neck bulging as I fought to restrain my hands hands that were aching to shatter that cold expression on his face. How did he dare? How did he allow himself to lay a hand on what belongs to me?
I brushed past him with a hard shoulder, as if colliding with a stone wall, and continued walking while the beast within me growled, demanding blood. Were it not for my fear of my grandfather’s devastating wrath, and were it not for the strict rules governing this house, I would have ended this conflict right here and now.
But I decided in secret to postpone this confrontation; the reckoning between us must happen far from these walls, in a place where no one can protect him from me.
I entered my room and slammed the door behind me with a violence that made the walls groan. I threw myself into the center of the room, feeling a genuine rupture in my chest, as if a rusty knife were being plunged into my heart and turned slowly.
I tried in vain to close my eyes, but the image of that torn white dress lying neglected on the floor haunted me behind my eyelids like a nightmare. Those shredded threads told a story I didn’t want to hear, confirming a truth I had been trying to escape with all my might.
I grabbed my hair and pulled hard, trying to stop the flood of dark thoughts, then exploded in a loud cry full of bitterness and oppression: "Damn it... damn everything!"
Did she forget me that easily? Did all those promises and moments we shared vanish the moment Alex’s ring was placed on her finger? My mind wouldn’t stop painting hideous pictures; I imagined the disheveled bed, their rhythmic breathing, and the whispers they might have exchanged in the dark of night.
Did they truly do it while I spent my night in hell, swallowing the pain of loss and regret?
I wanted her here, in this room, breathing beside me and falling asleep on my chest. I wanted her to be my wife, carrying my name and sharing my life, not to be a prize handed to my brother on a silver platter. Yet, despite all this wreckage living within me, I felt a flicker of burnt hope piercing the darkness of my thoughts.
Stephanie is no ordinary woman, and my brother is not the man who can possess her heart easily. They can never be together; I will make it impossible.
I left my room again after feeling the walls closing in on me, my chest heaving with rapid, difficult breaths. In the hallway, I caught a glimpse of Alex descending the stairs with total coldness, as if he hadn’t committed a crime against my heart just moments ago. That sight provoked me to the point of madness, and I decided the time had come to face the truth head-on.
I followed him with light, cautious steps until he left the palace. He got into his car and drove off, so I jumped behind the wheel of my car and started the engine, which roared with a power that reflected my state of mind.
I set off after him like a pitiless hunter, watching his taillights as I felt my blood pressure rise in my head. When we were far enough from the palace walls and on a near-empty road, I slammed my foot on the accelerator with everything I had.
the car took off like a bullet, overtaking him in moments. Then, I swerved the steering wheel suddenly to block his path across the street. The tires screamed against the asphalt with a sharp, grating screech, and a light smoke rose from the force of the sudden braking.
I jumped out of my car before it had even come to a complete stop, my entire body shaking with rage and insanity. I marched toward his car door with long strides, reaching out to pull it open with a violence that nearly ripped the handle off, then leaned toward him and roared in a thunderous voice that electrified the air around us:
"Get out, Alex! Get out and face me like a man!"
Alex stepped out of the car with slow, provocative movements. In that moment, his coldness was like oil poured over the burning fires of my body. Before I knew it, I lunged at him like lightning, gripping his shirt collar with all my might, until my knuckles turned white and cramped.
I shook him with a manic violence that made his head snap back, and I roared into his face, my voice choked with pure rage:
"How could you do this? How did you dare, you piece of filth?"
He didn’t show any defensive reaction at first, but soon he gripped my wrists and shoved me away with a sudden force that sent me stumbling two steps back.
He began adjusting his shirt collar which had crumpled beneath my grip with a provocative calm. Then, he let out a sharp exhale through his nose and glared at me intensely. "What is wrong with you, Cedric? Have you completely lost your mind in the middle of the road?"
I didn’t back down. Instead, I approached him again, jealousy gnawing at my chest and setting my heart on a fire that wouldn’t be extinguished.
I drew so close that my breath burned his face, and I spoke in a voice trembling with the intensity of my emotion: "Did you really fuck Stephanie, Alex? Answer me! How did you allow yourself to touch her when you know for a certainty that she is the mother of my twins? How could you do it when she belonged to me long before you ever entered the picture?"
