Chapter 771 - 771: Aftermath

For a moment, Hiro couldn’t even bring himself to leave the bed. He remained there hugging the bed, lost in the warm embrace.

Then he reached out to his phone.

Half-asleep, he turned on his phone. The screen flashed.

“What’s this?” Hiro blurted in awe.

The sight before him shocked him. The sheer number of notifications hovering on the screen overwhelmed him.

Hundreds. No thousands of messages, mentions, tags, and calls filled his screen. His social media apps were exploding, each one flooded beyond recognition.

Even the screen lagged just trying to process.

Hiro blinked, attempting to process the information before him. Then he rubbed his eyes in disbelief. However, the content on the screen didn’t change.

Was it really not a dream?

His hands trembled as he scrolled through the messages.

The first ones were from his childhood friends back home in Japan.

“Bro! What was that? The Golden Ball… For real? I mean, I know you could do it. But to be able to do it so soon, it’s absurd. Tell me, I’m not dreaming… Just tell me, I’m not dreaming. Oh… Yeah. Congratulations on the award. Drinks on you when you’re back, no excuses!”

Going through the message, Hiro couldn’t help but reveal a nervous grin.

“Typical Akashi…” Hiro grinned before opening another message.

“Congratulations, my son! Your mom and I are proud of you.”

This one, though short, softened his heart. There wasn’t much exaggeration, and the words were rather simple. But more than the words themselves, it was the sender who meant a lot to him. It was from his parents.

Hiro toggled through other messages, most of them filled with awe. Then he came across Eric’s message.

“Congratulations, champ! Do you even realize what you’ve done? Youngest winner in the history. First Asian to win the award. Champ, I knew it from the moment I landed my gaze on you… You had that spark of the champion, and you just proved me right. With this, your market value is going to skyrocket for sure, and trust me, offers are already piling up.”

“But forget the business for now… Just savor this moment. You deserve it, champ!”

Hiro put the phone down and rested his head on the bed. His friend’s messages, Eric’s words, felt so surreal. Thinking about it, he couldn’t help but smile.

These messages had already cheered him up.

But there was more than just messages. He still hadn’t checked his social media.

Usually, his accounts were handled by his manager.

Hence, he couldn’t help but wonder about the notifications from social media.

Had he opened his account?

Hiro couldn’t recall.

Hesitation flashed past his face before he opened his account. Just as he opened his Instagram, he noticed that he had been using the public account.

There, he noticed a lot of notifications.

The sheer number of likes, comments, tags, and mentions was so overwhelming that he couldn’t even bring himself to look through it all.

But he noticed that he had posted the picture of himself lifting the award.

This, however, didn’t sit right with him.

“When did I post it?” He wondered.

Hiro couldn’t recall the moment he had posted this picture of himself from the award ceremony. Well, beside him, there was just another person who had access to his account— his manager.

Having figured that, Hiro didn’t ponder this matter further.

But still, the photo of him lifting the Golden Ball was something else. He stared at the picture with growing interest, his eyes glistening.

The number of likes on the post had surpassed more than ten million, and it was still rising.

Even the comment section was full of life. People from all around the world were congratulating him. However, what surprised him the most was the comment from two living legends: Ronaldo and Messi.

Both had left a message for him.

Seeing their presence in his comment section, Hiro’s heart swelled with elation.

The people whom he had admired the most were commenting on his picture. He had never thought such a day would come.

But here he was witnessing it.

There were comments from his teammates, past and present.

But one particular comment left him perplexed. The moment belonged to Lucien, his rival in the Champions League.

Despite losing to him, he had commented on his post.

“Congratulations, Hiro. Looking forward to other matches.”

Those were his words.

The more he looked at it, the more it felt like a challenge than words of gratitude.

Still, Hiro didn’t pursue this matter further.

The news outlets were equally loud, the pundits complimenting him.

Clips of him raising the award were already viral, set to music, slowed down, or replayed endlessly. Along with the clips of him raising the award, his speech was also going viral.

For a moment, he got so engrossed in his phone that he even forgot that he was still in bed. Time passed just like this as he continued to scroll.

Usually, he wasn’t like this.

But for some reason, this time, he couldn’t refrain from doing so.

The allure of one more news was so enticing that he remained glued to his phone for a whopping five hours.

Everywhere he looked, people were talking about him. He had become the center of attention. Though he liked this attention, a doubt still crept into his mind.

‘Do I really deserve it? Can I live up to this hype?’

Hiro let out a deep sigh and glanced at his phone.

The initial elation turned into contemplation as he began to search for his answers. Now that he had won this award, the hopes on him would rise even more.

With the World Cup coming up, he would be under even more pressure than before.

The tag of the Best Player in the World came with a price.

Thinking about it, Hiro couldn’t help but recall the moment when Messi had crumpled. Despite his sheer brilliance, he couldn’t deliver it.

What if such a thing were to happen to him?

Would he be able to handle the outrage?
