Chapter 609: Chapter 315: A Simple and Brutal Ambush
Despite a minor incident, Cheng Zongyang didn’t stop and continued on his way out of the city.
To him, the incident was like a small pebble tossed into a calm lake. It created a few faint ripples, but it was nothing significant.
Once Cheng Zongyang was out of the city and a short distance from the gates, he picked up his pace. He used his Body Technique to speed toward the great mountain where he had first arrived.
Dressed in black, his clothes fluttered slightly in the wind. His expression was grim, and a hint of coldness glinted in his eyes.
Putting his long-mastered Body Technique to use, his figure flickered past like a phantom, wind whipping at his heels. Each step seemed to land on empty air, light yet swift. The surrounding scenery blurred as it rushed past, leaving only a faint afterimage in his wake.
It didn’t matter if his pursuers were Martial Artists or Cultivators; Cheng Zongyang was confident he could handle them. ’Why would I be scared off by some unknown trackers?’ He wouldn’t cower or abandon his plans just because someone was watching him. The matter of the Teleportation Array was of the utmost importance. It was central to his main plan and had to be dealt with.
He estimated that even if there was a Cultivator among them, their Cultivation wouldn’t be very high. After all, not just anyone would waste their time tracking a seemingly ordinary person.
And just as he’d guessed, a short while after he left, three figures appeared, tailing him from a distance.
Cheng Zongyang’s keen senses picked up on subtle sounds—the faint crunch of footsteps and the rustle of clothing in the wind.
He tilted his head slightly, listening. A cold smirk touched his lips. ’They can’t be Cultivators,’ he realized. ’Otherwise, they could have just attacked me openly.’
Cheng Zongyang didn’t slow down. Instead, he sped up.
He knew he could easily lose the three of them, but he preferred to lead them somewhere to finish this once and for all, preventing any future complications.
With a flicker of movement, he shot like a black bolt of lightning into a dense forest. The leaves rustled as he weaved through the trees with ease, like an agile cheetah sprinting through its territory.
The pursuers gave chase through the forest, but it was obvious their own Body Techniques couldn’t match Cheng Zongyang’s speed, and the distance between them grew steadily. They could only watch helplessly as his figure receded into the distance, their hearts filled with anxiety. They had never imagined his Body Technique could be so fast!
Cheng Zongyang raced onward, finally arriving at the foot of a faintly familiar mountain.
He slowed to a stop and looked up. The peak was shrouded in mist, which sometimes drifted like a thin veil and at other times churned like ocean waves. His gaze grew distant as he recalled his first meeting with the reclusive Wang Shouze and his family.
He took a deep breath. The crisp air, filled with the scent of the mountain forest, invigorated him. Then, he set off, heading for the far side of the mountain.
He deliberately avoided the direction of Wang Shouze’s home, not wanting to bring them any unnecessary trouble.
About seven or eight breaths after he started up the mountain, three figures arrived at the spot where he had first stopped.
One of the young men studied the tracks on the ground and turned to the middle-aged man between them. "Boss, it looks like he went around to the back of the mountain. Should we still follow?"
The young man’s face was a mask of conflict, a flicker of hesitation in his eyes. Their target’s speed was proof enough of his considerable strength. ’He’s at least stronger than I am,’ he thought.
The middle-aged man’s brow was furrowed, his gaze fixed on the mountain. After a moment’s thought, he said, "We follow! We’ve come this far; we can’t give up now. His Cultivation is Innate at best. I can handle him. Besides, the Gang Leader is waiting. But everyone stay sharp. This man knew he was being followed and left the city anyway. He’s not someone to be trifled with."
With that, he took the lead, striding toward the back of the mountain in pursuit. The other two exchanged a look before following close behind.
The mountain path was rugged and uneven, but to Cheng Zongyang, it was like walking on level ground. As he moved, he remained vigilant, paying close attention to his surroundings. He knew his pursuers wouldn’t give up easily and could catch up at any moment.
’I could fight them here,’ he thought, ’but it’s not secluded enough.’
Cheng Zongyang considered his options. ’These men have been on my tail this whole time, but who knows if they have backup following them? I don’t want to get tied down here and attract even more attention.’
’I need to find a secluded spot with advantageous terrain, a place where I can use my skills to eliminate them quickly and cleanly. The longer this drags on, the more risk there is of something going wrong.’
The middle-aged man and his two companions followed cautiously, each lost in their own thoughts. The leader was quite confident in his own abilities. ’The kid’s Cultivation is at the Innate realm,’ he mused, ’but he’s definitely not a Cultivator. My years of experience dealing with them tell me that much.’
He sensed that his target was no easy mark, but he was confident that with his experience, tactics, and preparations, he could capture him and bring him back to the gang.
His two young accomplices, however, were feeling uneasy. They knew this mission was fraught with risk, but they didn’t dare disobey their leader’s command.
As they ventured deeper into the mountain, the surroundings grew increasingly quiet. The dense canopy blotted out the sky, allowing only specks of sunlight to filter through the leaves. A light mountain breeze swept past, bringing a chill that sharpened their senses.
They didn’t know where Cheng Zongyang was leading them, but they had no choice but to keep following.
Cheng Zongyang continued onward at a rapid pace and soon spotted the entrance to a small valley.
Seeing it, he stopped and glanced back in the direction he’d come from, a cold smirk playing on his lips. He knew that, thanks to the trail he had occasionally left, his pursuers couldn’t be far behind. He took a deep breath to calm himself, then stepped into the small valley.
