Chapter 84: Chapter 84 The absurdity of the situation
"Good answer," Alessio said, his voice flat and controlled. "Next question. What do you do for fun?"
Daisy’s brow furrowed. Her eyes widened in shock. She stared at him, her mind scrambling for an explanation. What kind of interview question was this? She had prepared for technical questions, for questions about her degree and her skills and her experience. She had not prepared for questions about her hobbies.
She lowered her head, reaching for her phone to type a response. But before her fingers could touch the screen, Alessio pushed a notepad and pen across the desk toward her.
"Write in the notepad," he said. His voice was calm. "It is easier than typing, and it will be a record of your answers."
Daisy blinked. She looked at the notepad, then at him, then back at the notepad. She nodded slowly and picked up the pen.
Her handwriting was delicate and precise, each letter formed with care. She wrote slowly, her words flowing across the page like a gentle stream.
For fun, I like spending time in solitude. I find peace in quiet places. I also enjoy knitting—it keeps my hands busy and my mind calm. And I like collecting flowers. Dried flowers, mostly. I press them in books and keep them in jars.
She finished writing and pushed the notepad back toward Alessio.
He picked it up and read her words. His green eyes moved slowly across the page, taking in every loop and curve of her handwriting. It was pretty, he thought. As pretty as her. Delicate, gentle, and full of care.
Then he set the notepad down and looked at the next question on Rafael’s list.
His green eyes widened.
He stared at the page, his expression frozen. His jaw tightened. His hand, resting on the desk, curled into a fist.
What is your dream vacation?
He read the words again, hoping they would somehow change. They did not.
He looked at the next question.
Do you believe in love at first sight?
His eye twitched.
He looked at the next question.
If you could be any animal, what would you be and why?
He wanted to crumple the paper and throw it across the room. He wanted to march out of the office and find Rafael and strangle him with his bare hands. He wanted to scream.
Instead, he took a slow breath, composing himself.
He looked at Daisy. She was watching him, her dark eyes curious, her head tilted slightly.
He looked back at the paper.
If you could have dinner with anyone, living or dead, who would it be?
"Is this a professional interview or a personal interview?" he muttered under his breath.
Mr. Henderson saw his expression. He had been watching the entire scene unfold, his face carefully neutral. But his eyes gave him away—they were dancing with barely concealed amusement.
He knew exactly what was happening. Rafael’s questions. Alessio’s discomfort. The absurdity of the situation.
He quickly looked away, hiding his smile behind a cough.
Alessio caught the movement. His eyes narrowed.
"Mr. Henderson," Alessio said, his voice cold, "is there something you would like to share?"
Mr. Henderson’s face remained perfectly composed. "No, sir. Not at all."
"Your face says otherwise."
"My face is always like this, sir."
"That is what Rafael says. And he is always lying too."
Mr. Henderson’s lips twitched. He quickly suppressed it. "I would never lie to you, sir."
Alessio stared at him.
Mr. Henderson stared back. His face was perfectly composed, his posture straight, his eyes neutral. But inside, he was thinking: both brothers are made from the same mold.
Finally, Alessio looked away. He had more important things to focus on. Like getting through this absurd interview without losing his mind.
He looked at Daisy. She was still watching him, her dark eyes patient, her hands folded in her lap. She looked nervous but hopeful, like a bird perched on a branch, ready to take flight.
Alessio’s jaw tightened.
He did not know much about this field. He was not a perfumer. He was not a chemist. He was not someone who could ask technical questions about fragrance compounds and extraction methods.
But he could still take a basic interview. He could still ask her about her knowledge, her passion, her skills. He could still give her a chance to prove herself.
What would Daisy think of him if he asked her those ridiculous questions about dream vacations and love at first sight? She would think he was incompetent. She would think he was unprofessional. She would think he did not take her seriously.
The thought made him so angry that he wanted to beat Rafael into a pulp with his bare hands.
He cleared his throat, forcing his voice to remain steady.
"Next question," he said. "Why do you think you are perfect for this job? And what knowledge do you have about perfume? As you know, our company’s perfumes are world-wide famous for their unique and beautiful fragrances. We are looking for someone who can maintain that standard. Someone who can create something new, something beautiful, something that will capture the hearts of our customers. What do you have to say? Can you do it?"
He looked at Daisy, his green eyes steady and focused.
Daisy’s mind went blank.
She stared at him, her heart racing, her palms sweating. The question was professional. It was exactly what she had been expecting.
And she did not know how to answer.
Her mind scrambled for words, for phrases, for anything that would make sense. But nothing came. Her thoughts were a jumbled mess of fear, excitement and doubt.
But then, something strange happened.
Her body started moving on its own.
Her hand reached for the pen. Her fingers curled around it. Her eyes dropped to the notepad. And before she could think, before she could second-guess herself, she started writing.
Her handwriting was neat, precise, flowing across the page like water. But she felt the words that came out were not hers. They came subconsciously.
She wrote quickly, her brows furrowed in concentration.
When she finished, she pushed the notepad toward Alessio.
He picked it up and read her words.
His expression changed and shock flickered in his green eyes after reading her answer..
