Chapter 166: Chapter 166 Her attention

After dinner, Cedric was finally feeling a little better. The pain hadn’t disappeared completely but compared to the way his body had felt when he first woke up, it was much easier to tolerate.

The medicine had started working and he could move without feeling like every part of him was protesting. His ribs still ached when he breathed too deeply but at least he could sit up without wincing.

Daisy helped him take his evening medication, making sure he drank enough water before placing the glass back on the table. Her movements were careful and unhurried, as if she had done this many times before.

Once she was sure he was comfortable, however, she didn’t come any closer. She simply returned to the couch and picked up her phone, settling into her usual spot.

Cedric watched her.

At first, he didn’t think much of it. He assumed she was replying to messages or checking something important.

Then five minutes passed.

Daisy was still looking at her phone.

Another few minutes passed.

Still the phone.

Cedric frowned slightly. What was so interesting about that thing? He shifted against his pillow and glanced at her again. She wasn’t even messaging anyone. She was just scrolling through something mindlessly.

His expression became more annoyed. Was her phone really more interesting than him? The thought came unbidden and he immediately caught himself.

Why did he even care?

He looked away and tried to ignore her.

A few seconds later, his eyes wandered back toward her. Daisy was still sitting comfortably on the couch, one leg tucked beneath her, her thumb moving lazily across the screen. She looked completely absorbed, a small smile playing on her lips.

Cedric narrowed his eyes.

Who was she talking to? Alessio? That thought irritated him for some reason. Maybe her friends? His jaw tightened slightly.

Then he noticed her screen when she shifted her phone. She wasn’t chatting with anyone. She was simply scrolling through something casual, maybe social media or a video.

Cedric stared for another moment before finally looking away.

"...She’s just scrolling."

He muttered it under his breath as though he were trying to convince himself.

Daisy didn’t hear him.

Cedric sighed and leaned back against the pillow. He had no idea why he had been bothered in the first place. She was his wife. Yet somehow, he had never paid enough attention to her to notice what she did with her time.

Now that she was sitting there quietly, he suddenly found himself wanting her attention. The realization was strange and uncomfortable.

His eyes drifted toward her again.

Daisy smiled at something on her screen.

Cedric’s eyebrows lifted. "What are you looking at?"

Daisy looked up. She blinked at him, then glanced at her phone. She showed him the screen. It was just a short funny panda video.

Cedric looked at it for a second. Then at her.

"...That’s funny?"

Daisy nodded enthusiastically, her eyes bright with amusement.

He looked at the screen again. He didn’t understand what was so amusing about it. It was just a panda rolling around.

Daisy covered her mouth, trying not to laugh at his expression.

Cedric frowned. "What?"

She shook her head, still smiling.

He stared at her for a moment. Then, despite himself, the corner of his lips lifted.

"You’re strange."

Daisy smiled and returned her attention to her phone.

Cedric watched her for another few seconds.

A few moments later, Cedric shifted on the bed.

The movement seemed harmless at first but a sharp ache suddenly ran through his side. His face tightened, and he immediately looked toward the couch.

"Daisy!"

She looked up from her phone, her eyes widening at the pain in his voice.

"I’m feeling pain!"

Daisy’s expression changed instantly. The relaxed smile that had been on her face just moments ago disappeared, replaced by concern. She put her phone down and hurried toward him, her steps quick and light.

Her earlier relaxed expression disappeared, replaced by concern as she leaned closer to the bed. Her dark eyes scanned his face, searching for any sign of distress.

She quickly gestured, asking where it hurt.

Cedric pointed toward his side.

"Here."

Daisy carefully moved closer and looked at the area, making sure he hadn’t disturbed any of the bandages. Her fingers hovered near his ribs, not quite touching but checking through the thin hospital gown. She then gestured again, asking whether the pain was severe.

"A little," Cedric admitted, his voice quieter now.

Daisy frowned. Her brows knitted together as she studied his face. She adjusted his pillow and helped him settle back into a more comfortable position, her movements gentle and careful.

Cedric watched her face while she did it. The furrow of her brow, the slight downturn of her lips, the way her eyes remained focused on making sure he was okay.

The moment she came running toward him, something inside him had immediately relaxed. The sharp ache in his side faded into the background, replaced by the warmth of her presence.

He hadn’t realized how much he had wanted her attention until she was standing beside him again.

Daisy noticed him staring. She gestured, asking if he was feeling better now.

Cedric nodded.

"Yeah."

She gave him a suspicious look, as if she wasn’t completely convinced. Her eyes narrowed slightly, studying his face for any sign that he was lying.

"I’m fine," he assured her, his voice softer than he intended.

Daisy continued watching him for another few seconds before finally relaxing. She let out a quiet breath, her shoulders dropping.

Cedric looked at her.

Then, almost without thinking, he said quietly,

"You came really fast."

Daisy blinked. She tilted her head, her expression curious.

He looked away.

"Nothing."

Daisy narrowed her eyes slightly, clearly wondering what he meant. She studied him for a moment, then shrugged and stepped back.

Cedric simply adjusted the blanket and tried to hide the small smile forming on his face.

For some reason, having her worry about him felt strangely comforting.
